I have to say what a great job you have done reimagining your channel from a travel vlog to a NYC vlog during COVID. Building your channel on travel and couchsurfing only to have that all taken away must have been so discouraging. But you made a smart move staying in NYC, making connections with people like Kenneth (ActionKid) and Jon (Here Be Barr), and your channel has continued to grow as a NYC vlogging channel. Hopefully we can all travel safely again very soon, but in the meantime I'm really enjoying your NYC videos!

I was in Queens this weekend. I prolly wouldn't have been able to notice you since a lot of people were traveling by bike on that autumn like weekend. Even though I'm from Brooklyn, I actually grew up in Queens and the borough is as suburban as it gets. Every borough has its own vibe but with Queens, you certainly feel like you're away from the city, depending on what part of Queens you're in. It's also a relatively relaxed borough too (unlike Brooklyn and the Bronx which can get hectic at times.) 😅

What a shame Mary Jane But I live in East Bumble on Long Island! Halp. I used to live in Queens for years, and if I were still over in Rego Park, I'd for sure be getting on the subway and going up there, or taking a cab, or whatever. I never had a bike when I was in the city, but in retrospect, I should've bought one. Now I'm in like some wacky suburb and the local Chinese joint is good but they don't have soup dumplings. Most of them out here do not. Real dim sum you gotta go to Flushing, or Chinatown. I'm a 4-wheeled gypsy these days. For sure though, you're better off on foot in that area, or bike, or on the train.
@WhatashameMaryJane4 жыл бұрын
@@thiscorrosion900 I understand Scott :) If you're used to the subway then i'm sure you're not going to have problems walking even ten blocks. So maybe you can find parking more far and then walk. It will help appetite and digestion ;)

@@WhatashameMaryJane The last time I visited some shop in Flushing on Union, I parked a good 10 blocks almost north, and walked down, the parking is generally insane there, and Elmhurst, and also in Jackson Heights, sometimes. Really I'd rather take the train there, but I live now off Syosset LIRR, which doesn't really help me for Flushing. If you're in Little Neck you can take the bus right to Flushing, which is better.

How would you compare Queens and Brooklyn?
@WhatashameMaryJane4 жыл бұрын
Queens feels more like the real deal, where normal people with normal families live. And I don't mean "normal" int he sense that the opposite is weird or bad, I mean that it's more similar way of living than the average population around the world. Brooklyn in my (very little and very modest) experience is very much segmented by lifestyle of its inhabitants. Certain areas are mostly for very quiet families, others are more industrial, certain are residential and vibrant (similar to Queens, in this sense, like Sunset Park, Bay Ridge), others very young and party oriented (Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint), some filled with crime (East New York, Brownsville), others fancy and luxurious (and touristy). My impression is that Queens, in its extreme diversity, is more homogeneous in this sense. What do you say?

Beautiful! I'm not finished yet, but in advance: 20:55 Maybe it is the camera. Inside your really beautiful eyes are blue and outside they are green. What color are your eyes really? Your camera angle is much better than Actionkid's, because you make us feel like we're really with you. Which I personally find very pleasant. Maybe that's also the reason why I like his videos a little less. Your colors are much better in comparison. Actionkid could get a lot more out of his device if he would invest a little more time in colorgrading. His helmet camera seems restless. For you, on the other hand: Maybe experiment a little in saturation. The black point, the depths could possibly be manipulated a bit more. For a little more detail in the 'shadows'. But I'm not sure, it's possible that you have already reached the maximum. The lights are great, little to no color loss (Farbabrisse)! ❤️ You said I can criticize everything 😅 Well, I do not believe there is more to find... at present 😂 After Sunday is my Mary Jane video day, I had to start watching your first works. There are moving (bewegende/berührende) moments in them. Moments with from my own past memories. That you have preserved these stories for us makes me happy. They give a rarely seen depth (on YT) to your channel. This is quite perfect. Speaking of perfect, my daughter was able to extend her visa, which is as good as it is stupid. Well prevails 😀 Yes, the hair under the helmet - I know 💅🏼 Best regards and see you soon!
@WhatashameMaryJane4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sascha. Let me answer to your questions and comments. My eyes have rings of different colors, but the predominant is green. Me and Kenneth use different GoPro mounts and our choice mirrors exacly what we try to achieve in our videos: In my case, the feeling of being me and living my experience in first person, in his case - I guess, since I'm not him - the feeling of having an eye on New York City, I think he tries to be more objective in his videos, hence the lack of editing. About the colors I must admit I haven't done much color grading in this particular video, partially because it took me much more than expected to edit it (I published it on Monday instead of Sunday, my usual publishing day), partially because when the natural light is so flat (when the sky is very cloudy) the colors turn out so bad and I'm not able to make them look much better with color correcting, so instead of getting discouraged, often I don't even try to work on them. So you're right, I could have done much better, but I was honestly exhausted. Maybe I should try to find tips on color correcting in a cloudy day. Also, I use a combination of GoPro and iPhone 11, whereas AK uses only the GoPro. iPhone 11 has an amazing color grading already. I enjoy your critics, I can pick some of them and use them to get bette, like this one about color grading. I could have surely worked with black point, which I didn't. I just adjusted the contrast curve and worked on the general saturation. Wow, I never watch my very old videos, because I think they're so much worst that the ones I make now, so I feel embarrassed watching them, but I'm glad you can still enjoy them. Oh I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter extended her visa. I know it must be hard for you to have her so far away and you were looking forward to see her again. So I'm very sorry to hear. On the other hand, I know what it means to be the daughter who stays away for a long time, and I know that this is positive for her. It's probably the best thing for her personal growth, but I'm sure you know that and you're happy about it already. Yes, that hair... 😂 Liebe Grüße!!

Hi Mary Jane, for videos, quality is less important. The content makes the running. Well, and your content is right. I watched your first two videos. Works in which emotions can be experienced are above all. Yes, Australia was a good decision. She feels very comfortable there. The products I can recommend... I myself used X-Rite for years, but the big one for print production. During my education I switched from digital media to print. The small Colorchecker costs only 119USD solo. The right colours were just there with the spectrometer, before they made up about 25% of the working time.

Nice work Mary Jane, those 30 plus minutes flew by! (must have been the high speed action!). Yeah that cycling track was amusing, where you sped up your circuit of the race track, that was pretty cool!. It was interesting looking at the map you created, and how far you actually traveled, while still really only scratching the surface of the vast array of different routes you could have taken. You could honestly spend a lifetime exploring an area like this, and who knows what interesting things may be hiding just a short distance from where you and Ak had traveled. The track with the flowers would have been nice to experience, it would have been like being out in the countryside, instead of in a semi urban environment. I was seriously impressed by the old Asian guy doing the press-ups... man, that guy is like a machine!, he must have such a high amount of muscle mass, versus body weight, which is really totally contrary to what a guy of that age should have! (I think you probably caught his eye, and he was trying to impress you!). I will have to catch up with 'Action kids' version of this epic trip, and see how it compares to yours, it should be interesting! (I'd honestly watch anything with you in it, as you always lift my spirits!).

Travelling is like learning: the more you do it, the more you realize you still have so much more to explore. That little part with the flower smell was so pleasant that I'm actually thinking about going back there just to smell those flowers again. Manhattan with less street cleaning than usual is really making my nose's life hard. About the old guy exercising I swear he just came and started doing push ups right away without even looking around. The part I filmed was his 3rd or 4th set of push ups with feet on the bench and I only filmed less than the half of repetition he was making. Truly impressive. (You make me feel so happy telling me this!!!)

@@WhatashameMaryJane Didn't think about the street cleaning in Manhattan, I'm very sorry to hear that it's getting that bad!. When you said ("You make me so happy telling me this!!!")... I'm thinking mmm, what's she referring to here?. Was this about the old guy trying to impress you?, or about that comment I made at the end (I'm tending to think towards the latter). Anyway, a very delightful comment from you, Thank you!!.

Queens isn't just the most diverse borough in NYC. It's the most diverse county in the USA. There's isn't an ethnicity, religion or culture that isn't represented in it, so it's fitting that one if the original UN buildings was in Queens, just to the right of the Unisphere globe that you passed by in Flushing Meadows Park which is now the Queens Museum (whose highlight is a miniature 3D model of the entire 5 boroughs). The other major original UN building was in Nassau country just across the Queens border, in Lake Success. That spot where you had lunch was right across the street from the Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital, where the famous folk singer Woody Guthrie passed away. And the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, which was the first elevated highway in the US, built in 1909, actually extended from the East River all the way to eastern Long Island, and other sections of it still remain, but it's no longer contiguous, although there's been talk of patching these sections back together someday to create a contiguous paved shared use trail. A part of the short section that you rode has been repaved since you rode it, though. I grew up in Queens, and didn't really like it as a child, but as an adult I've come to appreciate it and all that it has to offer. Not all of it is interesting or pretty, but there are some real standouts, like its many parks, some of which still have stands of original growth forest including Alley Pond and nearby Cunningham Park, Fort Totten, the promenade along the East River, Jamaica Bay, Floyd Bennett Field, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and most of all its neighborhoods, people and food. You actually passed within a couple of blocks of where I live and also where I grew up, and the hospital where my sister was born, and rode along paths, trails and roads that I must have ridden hundreds of times, and may have passed me while I was out running or riding my bike. And, it's funny that you asked how the food you ate compares to the food in Chinatown, meaning the one in lower Manhattan, because you actually were in the Flushing Chinatown, which is now much bigger and more diverse than the Manhattan one and one of the biggest ones in the world. Also, you missed the beautiful lake in Kissena Park! If you ever ride through Queens again, I highly suggest riding up to and around Fort Totten in the extreme northeast corner of the borough, and on the bike path along Little Neck Bay and Long Island Sound. Then follow local roads west to Powell's Cove and McNeil Parks, then south to Flushing, west again along the Flushing Bay promenade, then onto Astoria where you can take the Triboro Bridge to Ward and Randalls Islands and then back to Manhattan, where you can ride south on the East River promenade. Really nice video and glad I came upon your channel. Nothing like an outsider's perspective to see your hometown in a new light and perspective!

The journey was so cool to witness. Thank you for this visit of Queens neighborhood. As a 5 timer Manhattan visitor it’s so refreshing to see outside of the tourist box. Love how ActionKid says “great Chinese food? i know where to go!” It makes me wanna go so badly. Is this place located in one of the Chinatown in Queens? I didn’t knew there was a bicycle track on Williamsburg’s bridge! I also want to say that seeing you wearing an helmet is good. I know from one of your previous video that you don’t wear one usually. I must say that I had a serious accident with my bike last year and I think I wouldn’t be writing this comment today if wouldn’t have worn one because it literally saved my life (broke in 2!). You will get quickly use to it, no worries, it will become your bicycling companion. Btw it’s strange that an Italian is not familiar with the steep angles of the old Monza F1 track near Milano, you wouldn’t be surprised while cycling the Kissena Velodrome 😊. Fantastic video, thank you both of you guys.❤️

Hey thanks for the feedback! The restaurant we stopped at was in Flushing, the biggest Chinatown in NYC. Not only there is a bike path on the Williamsburg Bridge, but it’s the king of NYC bikeable bridges!

Hi Mary Jane, I watched both videos with great pleasure. They are both excellent. In a way they mirror your personalities. I am a true fan of AK and as well of you. I really enjoy that your vids get longer. Your magic works! The speed, the sights, the details, the big picture and the sounds. Thank you and give my regards to AK, I am so glad I can watch your wonderful stuff. 😀👍❤️

Wow I didnt know Vanderbilt had a highway too. I thought they only made railways. I'm actually in the Vanderbilt bloodline but because the person who inherited all his money when he passed away burnt it all in her stove....long story short because of that, I'm not rich. Lol
