I actually learned all about this after my local state Congresswoman (and former sec of state) became Water Commissioner after a couple big companies were dumping massive pollution in our water. She claimed she asked them to stop and they freely did so (I highly doubt that). After that, they stopped sending us our water report (that we got annually and make it hard to find online). Then she decided to take a large payout (I mean paycut )to be our Water Commissioner.

Our septic tank was not two feet from house. The well was at the other end, some thirty feet distance. We had to dig out the tank every year due to its small size. Yes, our leeching bed area some 30 feet from tank was a slightly darker green than rest of the yard.

At least where I am (central VA, USA) the septic system has to be designed to accommodate a family of five as a minimum. If only two or three people use it, the system may easily go decades without needing any maintenance. Mine's been fine since 2015. Our seasonal cabin hasn't needed servicing for two decades.

Septic tanks and leach fields are so essay to mange and not person to pay every few yr. Just keep the bugs happy by not putting stuff in there that will kill them. Like what? most house hold cleaners. Use only 100% biodegradable ones. Then just for good measure give those bugs new friends every mo. Drop a packet of them in toilet 1st of each mo. Then there is where u build. Never ever build on flat ground. Ur leach field will fill up every time it rains and take days to dry out. Besides flat ground is for framing not building on. If the land u build on has a grate to it put ur leach field below ur well a good 100 ft from well. The land being on a grate means it will drain fast thus yr leach field will never fill up.
