@@JustinSaysRadioThe original dates to 1979, when "CBS News Sunday Morning" had first hit the television airwaves. The days of the week passing by in the on screen intro omits Saturday because CBS News did not have a Saturday morning news program until 1996. The later version from 1998 through 2004 shows all 7 days of the week in motion for that reason. For a 20-year-old or any age, you made a good choice. The original is often the best version as well.

A short note from a pedantic German speaker: the title of the theme is „Abblasen”, meaning something along the lines of blowing outward. You wrote, „Ablassen”, which is a word meaning to drain.

Wynton may be mostly in tune with himself, but he’s playing at like A = 448. It always bugged me. Plus I don’t love his extra ornament at the end.

The original Don Smithers recording is definitely the best. Then I would say the Marsalis version is the next best. Doc Severinsen's version just doesn't hit me that much. I'm just not a big fan of Doc's interpretation. It's just too "raspy." But again, that's just my opinion.
@murrayparr3244 Жыл бұрын
Yes. The 2 earlier versions are better for sure. I always thought that song was played on a French horn decades ago and not a baroque trumpet.
@Will_Moffett8 ай бұрын
If Smithers would have put in the Marsalis flourishes that would be the best of both worlds. I can't get over a slight fla Marsalis has on the flourish which is like a run. He actually cracked a note in there. It's hard to hear but once you hea you can't unhear it.

Respectively, the first two were straight & methodical _(almost like inventions)_ , while the third embraced flourish embellishments to make the audience think… not listen. Tone quality alone of the third is simply sweeter and brighter. It’s difficult to improve upon a Wynton Marsalis these days.

I enjoyed the first two in terms of performances. The last one by Wynton Marsalis has the best audio the first one. It’s too much reverb. The second one has marginal rhythm. It takes a very good player to nail the piece.

I think the second one has the best tone, but it's a bit out of tune. Overall, the last one is the best.

I love Don Smithers' first rendition, love Doc Severinson's second rendition, and dislike Wynton Marsalis's third rendition. Comparing Smithers version to Severinsen and Marsalis's versions is, while not quite like comparing apples and oranges, a little bit of an unequal comparison. Smithers' version was a vinyl recording played on a natural (baroque) trumpet; the other two digital recordings on modern piccolo trumpets. I prefer Severinsen's version to Marsalis's by a wide margin. Severinsen is so much clearer, his notes crisper. His rendition shows why he was one of the best trumpeters on the planet during his prime, a fact obscured by his wildly-tailored Tonight Show persona. Marsalis covers up his lesser amount of talent with flourishes meant to hide his less technical playing.
@gojedaАй бұрын
Wynton is a legend, but he missed the mark here. This piece does not translate well to people trying to put their spin on it. Abblasen demands fidelity to the way it was originally written.

all 3 of those guys could play this on Bb trumpet; but why play this on Eb trumpet? it sounds even better on Bb trumpet just asking cos most guys would just play it on what they got: a cheap ass conn or selmer, and if they put in the work from when theyre 6yrs old to 17 they can play this no problem. its bcos the smaller instrument is faster? and it sounds smaller? Like soprano sax players .. faster is not better. than ask chuck mangione in his prime to plsy it on flugelhorn!? my guess no problem. God i wish i couldve met Don Smithers tho.

How could you think Marsalis is annoying? If anything he is too cool, clam, and collected. I know people who know him. They say he is a little eccentric and not overly social but nobody has ever called Wynton annoying that I've ever heard and it makes no sense from what I've seen.
