All Time Low's Alex & Jack On New Album 'Wake Up, Sunshine'

All Time Low's new album 'Wake Up, Sunshine' is set for release this April so we caught up with Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat on their recent trip to London to find out more about the writing process behind this latest record, which saw the whole band living together for the first time since making 'Nothing Personal'. From filming their new animal-filled music video and writing the Britney Spears reference in new single 'Sleeping In' to collaborating with blackbear and The Band Camino, here is the full story behind ATL's highly anticipated follow-up to 'Last Young Renegade'.

Rock Sound that’s really hard to answer. Getaway Green is a great one to jam out to. Sleeping in is a great relationship song. Some Kind of Disaster is an anthem and has so much meaning. Sleeping in is my favorite music video from this album. My favorite song has to be Some Kind of Disaster. The second verse really speaks to me and I personally feel like this song touches on mental health which I’ve struggled with and continue to keep fighting. In general the boys just help the dark days feel brighter. 😊🤩😀

I heard of all time low, because the singer of my favorite band (and idols) Was a huge fan in 2008. He asked Alex to sing onstage, and Alex, being amazing, let him sing onstage with him for coffee shop soundtrack. That built his confidence and love for music. So thank you so so so much Alex for building their love for music. Edit: the band name is Set It Off and the one who got to sing with Alex was Cody, the lead singer.

I'm loving the two songs we have now, but I really hope they didn't change back from the Last Young Renegade sound because of the reaction from their more close-minded fans. I still think that's a fantastic album. Nightmares and the title track are some of the best songs they've ever written imo.

Close-minded is telling them they can't make music like that. All I've seen is people being vocal about preference. I personally didn't like much of Last Young Renegade, but I definitely hear some of it in Wake Up, Sunshine and it fits well.

Last Young Renegades failure was more from its overproduction, the songwriting was very good throughout, just never felt like it fitted ATL

There’s nothing wrong with not liking it. It was really different for them. Opinions are subjective. I just have seen most of the criticism of it come down to just “it’s not pop-punk so it’s bad. Go back to your old style”, when it felt like a natural evolution from Future Hearts to me. The Edge of Tonight could have fit perfectly on LYR, and I think that’s a great song. If they felt naturally inclined to do pop-punk music again, that’s great. They’re clearly great at doing it. This just kind of feels to me like what happened with New Found Glory after they put out Coming Home. Their fans didn’t like the change of style, so they just said screw it and regressed. Or even with All Time Low after Dirty Work, which in retrospect is really strange, because that album was hardly different from Nothing Personal, yet they were called sellouts for it. Anyway, I’m not trying to say that everyone who didn’t like it is close-minded. Just that a lot of the criticism of LYR felt that way to me.
