The mantalopes losing their intelligence does make sense, if you just have hooves you’re not gonna be building many useful tools. Also you got a remember that brains are an extremely inefficient calorie sink for most animals
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, intelligence sounds great and all, but creatures have to pay a huge price for it. And when they don't benefit from it at all, they will not keep it. Like ostriches lost their ability to fly because they didn't need it and flying needs also a lot of energy. Not just for the wings, also for the brain. And I guess it's not just about tools. Maybe mantalopes would have kept their intelligence or at least a significant part of it when there were predators around, because intelligence can be quite useful for defensive strategies and communication.
@suesana4504
@suesana4504 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei We don't benefit at all from intelligence? Without it how would you come to that idea? Just curious? Brains are good for abstract thought and anticipation of on coming events which mean you survive or you don't. They also help divert us and understand how we can overcome things that once seemed insurmountable, and was. Why do you think this? Hell, I'm happy when my brain decides to help me. it also gives of a sense of purpose (gravity) so it kinda feels like it gets put there because that's the way things are, or can be. I think I'd rather just not be though.

@@suesana4504 What are you talking about? He never said humans don’t benefit from intelligence. Humans have hands and a body that can manipulate their environment. If cows suddenly got the intelligence of a human, it wouldn’t benefit them since they can’t manipulate their environment and it’s not gonna help them getting food. So over thousands of years of evolution those cows will slowly lose their intelligence since complex thinking is a huge waste of calories. How do you not understand this concept?
@rubles88alvarez83
@rubles88alvarez83 Жыл бұрын
I’m only here to state the facts, don’t let this blow up. Intelligence worked out for us because we got extremely lucky. Other animals are quite intelligent, but the human frame had become agile and incapable of defending itself from predators, we took a huge gamble on intelligence and it worked. Despite our large brains and having existed for over 200,000 years, the first agrarian civilizations appeared only 7,000 years ago. All that time, living as Hunter gatherers, we had to consume far more food than other creatures our size.
@SubtleHawk
@SubtleHawk Жыл бұрын
@@suesana4504 We benefit tremendously from it. What they're saying is that other animals might not. Many animals have been here with bigger brains than us for way longer than us. They've had a lot more time to mutate the intelligence genes than we have, and many probably did. They just didn't find a use for them so natural selection didn't keep them around. Maybe there's have been a handful of instances of elephants that were born with human level intelligence, yet didn't pass it on because it wasn't particularly beneficial to their survival in their particular environment. It's brain took too many calories and perhaps the intelligence boost ended up costing them more than it benefitted it.

28:27 you have the right mindset, but the wrong questions. It actually is fairly easy to the finger fishers to become aquatic. However, the process of evolving sails, is not. Some say the sail people evolved from flying ginger fishers, then traded in their wings for sails. Even though this is a solid theory, sails are still like ridiculously inefficient for sea travel for animals. What do you do when no wind, lol. Just fly. The sail people really don't make much sense.
@aidanmatthewgalea7761
@aidanmatthewgalea7761 2 жыл бұрын
their entire world was a tropical climate, so naturally this is perfect for the occasional hurricane, but also for near constant, mid power wind. flying is actually harder in that kind of environment, and when most of teh world is an ocean, flight can be dangerous for longer periods of time as land was relatively sparse. flight only works well when you have the metabolism and musculature to do so, i mean, the most feasible way in the book was either have wings 5x larger than your body{ancestral hand flappers} or have a radial engine for a heart. sails are comparatively effortless when you can steer and brake. their ancestors realised that resting in the water and stretching arms ened up being more efficient for long distance travel, so they just did that, and it ended up being a habit more than a trait, with the only real evolution occurring in more manipulative mouths so the sails need to be folded less, and better webbed feet which arguably could have been present in a pre-pelagic life for better degree of control. the only reason this couldn't happen as frequently on our world is either not enough time has passed, or the fact that weather changes so frequently and on such a whim has discouraged many species from doing so,

8:30 bigger brains need more food. If you don't need a big brain to survive, then having it is a detriment. It's like paying for a TV when you're blind, a radio will do just fine. It's also implied here that the Mantelopes are depressed because they are intelligent enough to remember the past. The smart ones may have been more likely to commit suicide.
@garrettpridemore5758
@garrettpridemore5758 2 ай бұрын
That is very true. I would assume all of the smarter ones would kill themselves. The entire species is depressed. It would make sense that the smartest ones would know more or understand more and couldn’t handle it.
@uh-ooooh
@uh-ooooh 3 жыл бұрын
This is awesome! But do keep in mind, "losing" or "gaining" certain evolutionary traits isn't the same as a linear concept of what is "better" or "worse." Example: Mantelopes losing (or partially losing) their consciousness may make sense in their particular context/environment because there was no stressor/need for it. Many animals on our planet can attest to that as well - corals, hydras, etc. Sure it's a very wonderful and special thing, but evolution doesn't hold a trait up on a pedestal, even consciousness.

Explanation why they can only eat rotten meat? Simple Answer: Evolution These humans have evolved to be able to survive the planet they are in and were genetically modified to that aswell Also just a bit more info is the creator of this book is a british paleontologist someone who studies fossils and life from early geological period so most of this evolutions are possible since its probably based on actual evolution

7:21 there wasn’t much of a biosphere pre-qu. The star people terraformed living planets, choked out the aliens and left them mostly empty. The qu were pissed off by humans playing god so they decided to fill up the empty space.
@dumpsterfiregames4710
@dumpsterfiregames4710 2 жыл бұрын
Not true actually, the Qu had no feelings towards us, in fact they didn't see us as anything. To the Qu, we, humanity, were just another entity in the vast expanse of space, they had no opinion of us, for they had long since grown away from that primitive concept, they've been playing God for millions, if not billions of years before ever reaching the Star people, so it's not like they mutated us with hard feelings.
