Sometimes you don't realise how good or bad some things are until you get a new perspective. I now appreciate how we do our TAX rapport and handle online ID's here in Sweden. From start to finish it takes me maybe 5 minutes to file my taxes, and all online (secure login) IDs are done with 2FA on either your phone or physical ID + scanner/reader connected to your computer. I'm guessing that releasing standards gets tricky in a country fragmented into 50 states where everything is privately owned 😅

In America, tax filing companies like TurboTax actively lobby to make tax filing as complicated as can be theoretically possible so that they can sell their tax filing product to the poor masses. It's absolutely horrible. I'm still living in my parents' house as a dependent, and I already know I'm gonna dread leaving when the time eventually comes because of this, among other things.

Same in Finland. Mobile ID or online banking identification, easy and high security. Tax office fills everything up for you and sends you the conclusion each year. If you have deductables or any corrections to it, you fill it out either on paper or online and submit it. They also calculate your tax percentage and income limit for you. You can get new tax card online, fi you happen to earn more than you or tax office expected. They'll just bump up your tax percentage and that's it. I literally use 5 minutes a year on my own tax reports.

Canadian Here. I know for our taxes we are sent a pin automatically on our Notice of Assessment each year to use for the next filing year. We really don't have a choice about using it as it was implemented across the board for anyone who has filed their taxes electronically in the past.

4:00 - Just judging from the surrounding text, the IRS automatically giving you a PIN is likely only as a result of informing the IRS you've been a victim of identity theft. If the IRS doesn't think you're an identity theft victim, they likely aren't going to just generate a new PIN for you and send that your way.

Thanks for posting this. The worst time to try to get this pin is in mid-April. The website last year was so unresponsive I couldn't get a pin so I had to file by paper because of an identity theft. That only added six extra months to getting my return.

tax in the US is so weird. In the Netherlands we file taxes with de Belasingdienst trough their website with DigiD (Digital ID that uses your pasport or ID card NFC to then verify with a code you can set yourself to login)

Not everyone in the U.S. has a passport. Everyone who works has a driver's license though. They pretty much have to in order to get hired these days. However, driver's licenses are handled by each individual state (50 of them, plus Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam) and not by the federal government which handles taxes.

@@mattbosley3531 ah here you need to carry an id card (valid in the EU) or a passport (valid outside of the EU and inside the EU or a drivers license (only valid inside The Netherlands itself as an is card) they are given out by the country you are a born in so if you are durch you get them from the Netherlands but if you are swedish you get them from the Swedish government. The passport or ID card is both a durch passport and EU passport in my case. All EU embassys are available to me in the event that The Netherlands doesn't have one itself since we are automatically residents of the other eu countries that partace in the acquis communautaire law of the EU have to abide to it.

Thats a good point regarding making sure you actively request an IPPIN each year, and not rely on it automatically being mailed to you. I have been getting IP PINs for 3 years now, and it has never been automatically mailed to me in years 2 and 3. I also recommend getting the PIN before tax filing season starts.

Someone once tried using my SSN to file a return. It didn't process, and mine did after a little paperwork. The IRS set me up with the PIN, and a new one is mailed to me every year. Just got this years last week.

We have a similar thing in Canada. You must provide a pin that was included in your previous years tax return to file for, the current fear.

I am not certain where you got the information that freezing your credit at all three credit bureaus is free. I might just have incorrect information myself, but the only way I was able to freeze and unfreeze my credit is if I have an active premium account with the respective bureau (monthly subscription). I even tried freezing it and just canceling my subscription (while still frozen), but still no luck. They immediately unfroze it as soon as the subscription period ended. If you know of a way or method, I think it would be rather interesting to see it as a KZbin video and extremely helpful indeed. Security over personal identity and personal financial transactions, at least in the USA, is a fiasco. It was, even before the computers took over. The government decided to declare me dead. I forget how it came up, IRS, income tax of Social Security or something. Turns out a guy died and they recorded his Social Security as mine. We were one digit different. Was a mess dealing with the bureaucracy. In another instance, the SSA suddenly decided to change my birth date. It had been shown correctly for decades. When I tried to set up an account with SSA, I was rejected. I eventually figured out what happened, and another mess to correct. Lots and lots of paper.

I have a question on freezing your credit report. It is my understanding that your insurance rates, auto or homeowners and other things are based on your credit score. So if you do freeze your reports how does this affect your discounts on various accounts?

The downside of a ip pin is losing the ip pin number. The IRS sends you a new ip pin every year. Yes there is a way to find you ip pin online. But at time the IRS is unable to verify your identity and then you are sunk.

I just looked at my 2021 return - there is what is called a "taxpayer's PIN" - that I authorize my preparer to get on my behalf. But I'm not sure if this is the same thing being spoke of here. It says this: "I authorize (tax preparer) to enter or generate my PIN as my signature on the income tax return I am now authorizing". It is on the e-file signature authorization. I'm still not sure if this is the same thing or not.
