Fibresand is soon to be gone, Southwell is switching to Tapeta in August. Tapeta is the most consistent surface for racing results as it has the least amount of kickback, and is the most durable to inclement weather. The quality of AW racing has improved markedly with the introduction of Tapeta with top Trainers like John Gosden more likely to send their better horses to W'ton or Newcastle due to the quality of the surface. If you are betting on AW racing it's also worth noting that draw bias is usually an important factor over shorter trips, with low numbers preferred at Chelmsford, Lingfield, Kempton & W'ton due to the round, tight nature of the course. Newcastle is a straight course so no real bias exists.

Thank christ Southwell is digging it up. Like watching horses running on super glue there.

I think at Newcastle you want to be drawn 7 or higher on the straight sprint races but the bias can change during racing.. best too look for the pace but I tend to go middle to high

Every day's a school day. I learned plenty there. Cheers Caan. I do like backing aload of outsiders on the exchange on the all weather tracks.

Hey, thanks for the breakdown now it makes sense based on which horses form on those surfaces can gain a return win.

I love Southwell and its Fibresand. Certain horses act really well there and it is definitely one for Course Specialists though of course sadly the surface is soon to be changed. Great day out there too I went there before lockdown and I was surprised by how friendly and accessible everything was. Well worth a visit if ever you are in the area

It's sad that all the southwell horses will probably not win races when they changed surface...tbh I love it and has made me steady profit for 5 yrs

I like to bet on distance betting markets for meetings , what would you say is best for betting on close finish racing and what is best for horses maybe winning by a wide margin ? i have noticed that sometimes these all weather tracks have the word SLOW next to them , is that the same as a soft or heavy track on turf ? any heads up would be greatly appreciated.

Tapeta. Wasn't that the horrible pudding they used to serve up at school dinners back in the day - or was that Tapioca? ;-)

It's like a beach the drier The surface the slower The race (southwell) The heat effects the polytrack I have that with the times! Southwell are getting rid of the fibresand it's a shame because I think it's the most reliable if you have a horse who likes it. Timing is important at Kempton at the furlong pole!

Fibresand often looks more like quicksand to me the way the horses seem to run through the ground in slow motion.

Doesn't paste well but if you U.K. punters are having a go on the Oz tracks here at the turf track ratings. Basically, the top one is known as a F1 and I cannot remember ever seeing one. Would be like running on concrete. In the warmer months, most tracks are prepared to start as G4 and upgraded to as G3 half way through the meeting, When the U.K. horses come out for the Spring carnival, the U.K. trainers complain that anything harder than a S5 is too hard. So, on a nice day at Flemington in November the track will be officially rated a G4 but to keep the visitors happy will be more like a S5. Numerical Rating Old Scale New Scale Description of Rating F1 Fast Firm Dry hard track G2 Good Firm Firm track with reasonable grass coverage G3 Good Good Track with good grass coverage and cushion G4 Dead Good Track with some give in it S5 Dead Soft Track with a reasonable amount of give in it S6 Slow Soft Moist but not a badly affected track S7 Slow Soft Rain affected track that will chop out H8 Heavy Heavy Rain affected track that horses will get into H9 Heavy Heavy Wet track getting into a squelchy area H10 Heavy Heavy Heaviest category track, very wet, towards saturation

A 3rd surface for bettors to bet on is a terrible idea. The more surfaces, the more difficult for horseplayers.
