@@watchgoose when you take into account all the physio, vets, shoes, feed, livery, grooms, yard up keep, bedding, petrol travelling to events, lorry upkeep etc it's extremely rare. If you have a champion stallion that you can then put out to stud, yes maybe. But to get a champion stallion you have to find one. That means paying for other horses, the upkeep of them and the upkeep of the whole yard etc still. To be a millionaire in the horse world you have to start as a billionaire

To give you some information, one of the main question for racing horsing is where will the go after they finish p, their are many options their is retirement, the breed, or they can go to programs which stop horses going to the slaughter house such as off the track, if you decide to sell your horse after the would most likely go into a different type of sport such as show jumping or dressage. Every owner and trainer try’s so hard to keep them out of the slaughter house but their are some people which unfortunately do it and the are shamed upon. P.S this comes from a horse owner in horse racing

I trained for 10 years, my dad and grandfather trained. I had some success, but you can't be remotely compassionate. Lots of clueless w*nkers in the game who don't know or care about the horses. The best horsemen (and women) get nowhere and do hang around for the love of the horses, but you will never (ever) see or hear of them unfortunately. I walked away 3 years ago and haven't sat on a horse since because I accepted that the game is f*cked. Poorly run sport/business - simply a medium for bookmakers and racecourse shareholders. 🤐

I didn’t say the trainers were injecting drugs in their veins. A lot of horse racing facilities inject illegal drugs in them to make them run faster. Also, there is proof for this. I saw a study earlier on, since I was researching about the sport, that most race horses showed positive in an illegal drug test. I’m not saying I know shit about horse racing, but there is proof that it’s cruel. And, I do know, since I am a horse rider myself, (even though I’m not saying I’m “qualified” because of this) that making the horses do all of this running, especially at a young age, is really bad for the horse.

I am an ex jockey and in my humble opinion Black Cavier was the best (they all raced over different distances so hard to gauge times etc..but BLACK CAVIER had a host of issues physically and the was brilliantly trained by Peter Moody who kept her sound enough to do what she did...and that in itself deserves extremely high praise.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most of the people calling this abuse have never been to a racetrack let alone the backside of the racetrack. You could argue whether or not its humane but abuse is far from the way these animals are treated. This is an industry with regulations like any other. These animals are pampered considering the amount of money the owner pays the trainer. Every race morning the Vet comes to the barn to see that the horses that will run that day are looking in top shape. The slightest indication of anything bothering the horse and the horse wouldn't be able to run. The horses are also checked a second time that same day right before loading into the starting gate. And then a 3rd examination by the vet occurs post race. I'm not arguing that there aren't bad people who have done terrible things to horses. I remember reading an article on google about a farm who's owners abandoned their horses and they were found starving to death some time later. That's abuse. Horse racing isn't.

Jump/national hunt racing is not called simply a steeplechase. There are two types of national hunt racing, steeplechase and hurdles. A steeplechase (also known as a chase) is run over fences while a hurdle race is run over hurdles. Fences are typically higher and don’t fall like a hurdle when a horse hits them. Most horses start by racing in hurdle races.

Yep. Just a tidbit for any readers unfamiliar with this abbreviation. A.I. stands, in this instance, for artificial insemination, not artificial intelligence. Another black eye on the Thoroughbred breeding industry is nurse mares. Also, related to the no-A.I. issue, is when Stallion owners are so money hungry that they subject their stallions to airplane flights in order to transport them to the opposite hemisphere of the globe so the stud can cover more mares. Thorobreds have a very Short shelf life and off to the killers they go. Famous big money racers earning millions have ended up on the killing room floor. How’s that for loyalty to an animal who served his master well? One reason the dog racing and horse racing industries are getting phased out is that neither had a consistent and humane “exit strategy” for their animals. Greyhounds end up abandoned, sold for medical research, dog pounds, coyote hunters or shot. Frankly it would be better to humanely euthanize them - death is not the worst thing that can happen to an animal. Race fans will never see it any other way. They are blinded by competition. Working animals are fine. But understand you are long overdue for positive public relations. Don’t be alarmed when the General Public doesn’t agree with you. I’ve worked dog tracks and have owned ex-racers dogs and horses. These animals get a raw deal.

@Karl Wilson well yes, but you also have to admit that while Frankel is a great sire, he was a good runner, he could be beat, while American horses can be beat as well because I'm not saying that they cant, when they do go over to England to race they often have great success, G1s included

The business of horse racing reminds me of "puppy mills". Everyone wants the next super stud, so who cares if the horse only stays healthy enough to race for just five years. We could double the racing careers if we demanded that all competition horses "must" compete without any form of hoof protection. Almost everyone in the medical field know that most of the health problems are rooted in hoof care, but it doesn't fit into their business model to push for change. You see for the medical professional it's more profitable to correct a torn tendon or ligament, for the owner's we've made it more profitable to put it out to stud. In other equine sports it is because of ignorance, in Tb racing it is intentional kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZfRiGaEgdCfedk Look around my channel and see the transformations that are possible when we help the hoof perform as nature intended.

While it is very true that there are bad people and bad owners in the racing world, it is also very true that Many of those in the horse racing industry are smart enough to know to take Extremely good care of their horses. For most people these horses are investments and a broken down horse is worthless (in investment terms), so it makes more sense to them to take proper and exceptional care of these horses so they may be used or sold for stud to create future winners.

@@reverse_thoughts8120 At first, like most, I thought “those evil owners,” but after watching this video I’m not so sure kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXW2Y4yhgsh9Zrs In California >35% of the horses on the “Vets List” are managed by < 5% of the Trainers. The most enlightening fact for me in this video started around 18 minutes

Reverse_Thoughts are you really serious? You believe that? Use ‘em up. Buy another. Horse racing owners aren’t in it to take exceptional care of their investments. It’s to expensive. Sort term fast gain is key. Cash flow is key. Vets are expensive and only the best of farms really use them to prolong the life of their horses. Taking good care of racing animals is a good way to go broke. Puppy mills are the same - sell pups while they’re cute. Breed the kennel breeders until they can’t. Putting vet care into them is not making money. Once they can no longer make money for the mill owner off they go for the one way walk over the hill. The Amish are notorious puppy mill operators. Believe me. They don’t feed anything that doesn’t make them money. The number of horses that make it to a good home after their race career is low. The number that get sent to the killers is much higher. They have to wring one more dollar out of the animal by selling it to the killers.

bmc06239 TBs have big bodies for lung capacity and very long lean legs. That doesn’t ever get balanced. I don’t think they ever get to mature properly before being put to work. Tbreds have notoriously terrible, shelly, thin soled feet. And yes. No foot. No horse

Seems very unfair that those that own winning stallion and turn them into a stud horse and they make 30 million dollars a year on that horse certainly there are able to reimburse their jockeys for all the hard work it's unfair that jockies only get a decent salary if they win. They should get fair base salary for doing their job and the risks they take. These people can't afford millions of dollars for horse but then pay the jockey next to nothing seems they're not being fair to the jockey how about spending just a little bit less on the horse and a little more for the jockey.

I wanna race but I will NEVER do that.i will race a horse that is like... 7-8 years or more? I'd never force themselves to go that hard, mostly cuz I wanna be a vet and why would I do that? I'd probably give a tiny slap to get a stubborn horse going but never whip .I'd never startle the horse cuz then I'd get hurt and I might scare it.
