Hi all! I still TOTALLY recommend Hubitat. It is still the only sensible solution in my opinion to get all your devices in one place. Home Assistant is catching up, but until Home assistant starts coming with a Zigbee and a Zwave controller built in then this is still the obvious choice in my opinion. Home assistant has a lot of struggles when it comes to updates breaking things, and SD cards getting burnt out. Hubitat suffers neither of these problems and has an Alexa skill that doesn't cost anything. At present there is still no competition at this price point!

The hubitat app is to be released shortly, like 3-4 weeks. I just watched a live stream with the dev team and they are beta testing right now. Great video Paul and you're correct, this is the best hub. The team of developers and the community is so amazing, and for a measly 89 bucks, on sale through the weekend, it's a total steal. The new C5 hub now has internal radios, no more dongle thingy. Thank you Paul.

Holy crap. Here I am researching hubs trying to move away from my smartthings / nue / Xiaomi / hue hubs and find a SIMPLE universal solution yet to no avail. I jump on the KZbin app to relieve some stress and you have answered my question without even trying. I am totally getting one. Can not wait for the app though that will make life simple although in saying that Alexa controllable is all I need and quite honestly the amount of effort I have to go through to make Smartthings work with xiaomi and others I just really can not be F$#%ED. Sooo freaking excited for this. Honestly mate. You’re awesome. I wish I could do more for you then jus watch your videos and subscribe. Sincerely thanks from Australia Aaron

Paul - love your channel. Nice and simple and most of it I can understand. Now I have a challenge. I have at least half a dozen "she who shall not be named" (SWSNBN) devices and I my lights come on before sunset, go off at 11pm, night light goes off after sunrise and all that kind of stuff. I can even tell SWSNBN to turn off the Christmas lights when we go out and on when we come in. Fantastic. My last achievement was to get two smart light switches working (are there any that do not require a neutral wire as that is doing my head in). And now my issue: I have a smart switch in our lobby lets call it. I have a movement sensor. All are SmartLife. Now I want the light switch on when movement is sensed and then to switch off after say 4 minutes. I cannot figure it out. I have tried the SmartLife app (yes I think I can get the lights on now but there is a delay - too long a delay - and it is not consistent), Tuya, IFTTT. I also only want it to work when it is dark so linked to sunset and sunrise and just to be awkward, I want it to work when it is raining as it tends to be dark also. Any ideas how I might do this?

It's nice. Got a few devices after watching your videos. It's a little more ... finicky that you let us believe though. Lots of stuff requires "community help" or "community code". And lot's of devices won't work out of the box even though they're popular in Europe. I think Hubitat is probably the best option right now, but even so, you're overselling it. Especially ALL WiFi stuff seems hard, not just some of it.

Great video Paul. Hubitat has probably the most potential out of all the hubs I've looked at. I know a lot of people point to hass.io because it's "free", but that's not entirely correct. You still need some hardware to run it on, and you'll need to buy usb radios or chips to be able to manage the networks anyway. It also has a higher technical entry point due to the way it's setup and configured (which is totally fine for folks that want that). I like the HE hub because it seems a nice middle ground for those that want a supported solution that supports a lot out of the box (lower entry point), but then gives the flexibility to code extra pieces to add to the platform later. It would be great to get some localised distribution though.

Best Hubitat review I've seen yet, good job. One thing that was perhaps slightly misleading, and it's a fine point I admit, the reason Nest isn't supported (anymore) is Nest themselves. Nest corporate policy recently decided to just say no more dev api access. Not really any fault of Hubitat's, and it was historically supported (natively, or via community drivers/apps).
@pstuart
@pstuart 5 жыл бұрын
But if you sign up and get developer keys, there is a community Nest integration available. Of course you can also control Nest via Google Home as well. Use routines in GH and a trigger from Hubitat to control Nest as well. Or IFTTT also works. Many different ways to control Nest.
@paulhibbert
@paulhibbert 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, from what I gathered none of this is Hubitat's fault, but the upshot of it all is that you need an Internet connection whichever route you go down. It's a bit of a shame, but meh, not that big of a deal.

No great surprise though. Flipping big companies love to lock their stuff down. It's a slowly changing attitude though I think, companies are finally waking up to the idea that integration makes their products more desirable and more profitable rather than the other way around. It's a really 90's concept to shut everyone out.

@@paulhibbert I hope you are right, but I am seeing the opposite. Vendor lock in in IoT reminds me of the early days of the internet and AOL's walled garden approach. Hubitat Elevation is great as long as you don't use rule engine(4). I use a Raspberry pi4 with Node Red for most of my rules, and use IFTTT for the odd couple, as hubitat started to slow down to a point it took 20secs to turn a hue bulb on and i only had about 20 rules in rule engine, everything now turns on instantly and i have 50+ rules in Node Red. It's so much quicker to create a rule in Node Red and to change the rule too, rule engine to frustrating at best.

Great video as usual. Pity I've just bought a Samsung Smartthings hub. I did look at the hubitat but the price put me off and the fact that the US version is $99 but the one for the EU/UK is $124 and a lower model with their estimate of £30 import duty. plus you have to have a USB dongle stuck out of it. The price may get better and we may get the newer US model I suppose.

@showmeez
@showmeez 5 жыл бұрын
It's a difference in broadcast standards, Hubitat is a small company as yet and having boards made to cater to all localised transmission wavelengths is prohibitive, that's why EU/UK variants are more - it's basically adding the cost of the usb hardware. As yet the system is still finding its feet, I've been using the hub for a few months (UK early adopter) and with the latest dashboard updates and some of the under the hood tinkering it's starting to find it's stride. Having said that, it still needs a lot of polish and some streamlining to be really mainstream (in my opinion, at least). Yes, it's powerful and local - local! - but for anyone who doesn't actively enjoy tinkering with their systems then it's not easy to set and forget. Yet. Looking forward to seeing how it grows though, and it's nice to see it breaking on KZbin. They deserve some notice, the team behind the hub are incredibly dedicated.

My main issue is that all my lights , bulbs , switches are wifi and they work perfectly with Amazon routines , I just want to have all my devices in a dashboard and control them . Thanks buddy , you’re amazing. Greetings from Australia.

The rm plugin then has all my devices programmed into it and then I ticked the "http" checkbox in the rm plugin to advertise the devices ascross the network. Its then just a case of getting the Hubitat to dial up the right http address for each device using Hubitat's rule machine software. @@paulhibbert Hi Paul, The two options for USA, both using Z-Wave of 908.4 Mhz have the internal radio but all the others, with a wide range of Z-Wave frequencies being used around the world have the USB stick. I suppose it is a practical way to avoid having to stock lots of different devices with the radio frequency being the only difference. Thanks again for your interesting and informative videos.

Hei man, any updates on hubitat? I m playing with smart devices for about 5 yrs now. Started with xiaomy and ended up with way too many brands now. I was thinking to play with my raspberry pi but I think I m going to end up taking pills :D. How s the hubitat so far? How difficult is to pair wifi devices with the hubitat? I see on their website EU and UK version. Which one should I choose? Thanks!

@paulhibbert

Thanks my friend :) I would start out with something easier to begin with. I think Hubitat would have been very daunting for me in the early days. Smartthings is a good starting point if you're wanting things like Zigbee door sensors, and motion sensors. And the nice thing is if you decide later on to graduate to using Hubitat then all of your Zigbee sensors and motion will work with it too so you won't have to completely start over.

:) If you just want Alexa control for now then I would start with Wifi stuff, it's cheap and easy but I recommend sticking to only stuff that works with the Tuya Smart Life app, there are lots of companies that use it, and it ensures that all your wifi gadgets work under one app and that they're all compatible. Once you reach about 15-20 devices your router will start to struggle though and you'll have to decide at that point whether to invest in a stronger router, or head down the smartthings/hubitat route. Check this video out for some other ideas for a good starting point: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5nJYZV8ZtSFhNk

I have two rooms (now together as one) with two different light circuit's, I want to control both from one wall switch. I thought I had found the solution with lightwave smart video (as featured on an earlier video). But then I've looked at this video and am wondering going forward if lightwave is the way to go. all the lights in the 2 rooms are dimmable LCD downlights but I have the added issue of possibly 2 to 3 LCD strip lights (I'm aware that lightwave are specific on the driver for these). I want to control from phone and from the wall switch. Help! is the lightwave the best solution? I don't want to buy a load if expensive hue lamps.

Hey Paul, first time caller, does Hubitat work with BroadLink devices?
@paulhibbert
@paulhibbert 5 жыл бұрын
Not directly. Obviously it can be done via IFTTT. In order to make it work locally I've installed the RM plugin on my Nvidia Shield and turned on the HTTP server like I showed in the video. I then send http requests from the Hubitat to the Nvidia shield and it responds by turning on or off whichever device exists at that http address.. Easier than it sounds :)

Home Assistant can control my Tuya devices and my Harmony Hub. Although, I had to install code to make the tuya devices work. I'm surprised if this is based on Home Assistant it can't do the same thing. On the other hand to my only solution to control some of my other devices like my RM Mini, Sonoff, and Broadlink home is IFTTT or Stringify. Overall though, this looks like a more useful device that my Smartthings Hub. It might be very interesting to see a head to head comparison. The thing I really don't like about the SmartThings hub is it takes forever to configure automations. I've spent more that 12 hours on my entertainment unit, and I'm still not quite happy on the way I have automated that. Should my SmartThings hub die, there is no easy way to move that automation to another hub... But once the Smartthings hub works, it works consistent well.
@robheyes6470
@robheyes6470 5 жыл бұрын
It's not actually based on Home Assistant - it's largely SmartThings compatible, most SmartThings drivers will work with just a few minor tweaks. Hubitat creates automatic backups nightly, and you can download them to a PC.

Paul any ideas what the HDMI port is for?
@Ogie-Wan
@Ogie-Wan 5 жыл бұрын
The only ports that are used are the power, Ethernet, and USB ports for the Zigbee/Z-wave radios. The newer C-5 hub is purpose-built and only has power and Ethernet connectors as the radios are internal. The C-4 hub was based on an existing AndroidTV box, which explains the extra ports. Since Z-wave frequencies are country specific, Hubitat is still shipping the C-4 hubs ,outside the United States, to allow for the different frequency Z-wave radio stick. The CPU, RAM, and Flash storage specs are identical between the C-4 and the C-5 hubs.
