I’ve had a cat genie for 8 years and I’m on my 3rd variation, the Cat Genie AI. I will say it is by far the best of the 3 versions. Setup is a breeze. Cooked poop is much less of a problem. I have 3 cats and 2 Cat Genies and I will never go back to any other litter system. I’ve never had the wet paws issue, mainly because I have it on cat activation so it’s cleaned after every use. One tip if you continue to use it, move your drain hose so it exits out of the back. Having the actual unit crimping the hose like that could cause a clog.

Hey guys! Hope you found this review helpful. We also have some more information that may help you to decide whether or not you want to try this self-cleaning litter box. Petnovations Ltd., the company behind Cat Genie, contacted us and requested that we clarify the following details: 1. It is not recommended that you use an extension cord with the Cat Genie. The Cat Genie user manual discourages this practice due to fire hazard. 2. While it is normal to see some waste lingering in the toilet after one use, your toilet will self-level, eventually resulting in a full flush. The toilet bowl should be 98% clean after three uses. 3. In Cat Activation mode or when flushing after each use, there should not be any risk of your cat stepping in their own urine. 4. According to the company's sales data, users typically purchase no more than 2-3 boxes of litter and 5.8 SaniSolution cartridges each year.

EXCELLENT video - thanks very much! I'm 'investigating' owning a Cat Genie. My circumstance is my new (rescue) cat drinks a LOT and I've been cleaning his litter box twice a day. I used to be able to leave town for 2-3 days, and my (former) cats were just fine... this one requires more oversight. The Cat Genie does offer a hands-free advantage, but your video answered MANY questions I had about it. Now it's almost $600 to get in, and the supplies are more expensive than when the video was produced. Maybe the next generation Genie will be more attractive. Thanks again!

Great review! I like to see how other cats experience goes with it. I got a cat genie in 2012 and have had a good experience. I have one cat, he used it right away, I can mention he was flunking citiKitty training at the time, he kept going doing his business in the sink or tub. I set the machine to cat activation mode so I have never experienced the wet paws issue. That cooked poop smell during the dryer cycle is horrible, horrible, horrible! I nearly returned it just for that. But I discovered leaving the bathroom fan on all the time is enough, besides once the dryer cycle is done there is no smell at all. Being kept in a guest bathroom one time a guest didn't know why the hose was in the toilet bowl and removed in putting in on the floor without telling me. Horrible cat sewage water was all over my floor when it ran it's next cycle, so make sure anyone using your toilet are aware do not remove that tube! After that I actually ended up putting the machine inside the bathtub and adjusted the wastewater tube over a funnel into the tub drain. I just run clean tub water briefly each day and the drain doesn't clog. This is a guest bathroom which the tub wasn't being used anyway so this set up has worked well in my home for years. I like the peace of mind knowing if the machine ever breaks the sewage is confined to that tub. Catgenie has stopped working a handful of times, it gave specific alarms, the user manual describes what each alarm means and every time I was able to fix the problem on my own and get it working again. The granules would track out on his paws a lot but having in the tub helps, now he has to jump over the edge so more of them tend to stay in the tub. The expense of the cleaning solution, maintenance cartridges, and occasionally buy more granules honestly cost about the same as traditional litter. But the convenience of never scooping or lugging dirty litter around is well worth it to me. But yeah same machine for 9 years running pretty amazing imo

I've had several CatGenie litter boxes for over 10 years and have been very happy with this product. There are a lot of negatives in this video that seem a bit unfair - like not mentioning that the granules are biodegradable, the cartridges are recyclable, it is safe for septic systems, uses only a small amount of water and electricity and is cost effective compared to buying clay/oil based cat litter for the life of your cat. Also, this box saves TONS of cat litter from going to the landfill (and their respective containers). You no longer have to transport, fill, scoop and remove waste using clay based litter. The convenience alone is worth the price - not to mention your cat will always have a clean litter box (it doesn't have to wait on you to clean it!). Everyone I have talked into trying one of these still has it today - don't judge something without trying it first :)

@SummaGirl13473 жыл бұрын
I think it depends where you live, and what type of litter you use. There are plenty of litters that are not clay or oil-based, and in some parts of the world, water use is an extremely costly and environmentally-important factor. So, if you have a huge house and live in a place where water is cheap, this may be an option. For those of us in small dwellings where it rains fewer than ten times a year, this is definitely not an environmentally friendly product.
@picassopc3 жыл бұрын
@@SummaGirl1347 I live in SoCal - an extremely drought area and it only affects water usage slightly (with two cats). I have it on "auto" mode so that it only runs when necessary, saving water. Any additional water use expense still outweighs paying for litter.

@picassopc Just to be clear, she wasn't judging something without trying it first. The whole video was her trying it. She had a negative experience overall. That's fine if you have it, and have positive things to say about it though. Thanks for sharing them. For the record, regardless of the biodegradability of the litter, you shouldn't be composting or flushing cat droppings. Cat plops have parasites that can be harmful to humans, and water treatment plants, don't remove those parasites as they are not designed to treat water with human waste. Look up cats and toxoplasma. You may find it to be an interesting topic.

My husband and I had this for 2 years and finally switched to a different box. The one thing we didn’t even think about is the maintenance of the actual hardware. There’s a proprietary maintenance solution you can use which completely messed up a box of granules for us, so we decided to just take it apart and clean all the necessary parts. It was DISGUSTING. Think about all the waste that runs through it for the duration of 6 months getting caked up in the bottom. There’s a little plastic sensor stick thing that you have to take the whole thing apart to get to, and if it gets too much waste on it, you have to dig it out and wipe it off. All in all it just required too much work to keep up with. We just ended up getting the Scoop Free box, and it’s been so much nicer. We use the reusable pan and just hose it down when we have to change the litter. We also like that it doesn’t wake us up in the middle of the night.

If you clean it as instructed, the hardware won't be that dirty. It takes about 45 minutes to do, and gloves exist. It's the same waste that you hand scoop and breathe in with a regular box... My guess is that you were not running the maintenance cycles as directed, and probably didn't clean the box for the entire 2 years.

Note that flushing litter is strongly discouraged if you live near a coastline, as some feline parasites end up making their way into the water system. California law actually requires litter to have a statement telling consumers not to flush it ( FGC § 4501 ) .
@CatGenieCatBox4 жыл бұрын
Here at CatGenie, we had to do a lot of research and make sure our product was safe before we could go on the market. The occurrence of the Toxoplasma Gondii parasite in domestic cats while common, usually happens one time and does not often reoccur and when it does not as many “eggs” are shed by the cat in their waste. Almost all adopted cats from shelters have already been exposed and have passed the parasite through them before they were adopted. It is not illegal to flush cat waste and in fact is recommended by the EPA as the best way to dispose of animal waste. The issue of cat waste is about wild and feral cats, who go in the wild and its run off gets into the environment. I hope this helps!

I bet there’s an associated sticker shock due to the amount of power this thing must use. Imagine running a hair dryer 17 minutes at a stretch multiple times a day. And I wonder what kind of testing they did on those plastic granules regarding their impact when they inevitably end up in sewage systems and in rivers and lakes. I could swear stuff like that was banned here in Illinois.

We bought the AI version, so I get daily usage reports on my mobile device. Generally, it seems to be about 7 visits, and 5 cycles per day, and the max was 14 visits and 11 cycles. Scatter and tracking is far less than the Scoop-Free it displaced. We retained the Scoop-Free as an alternate, as well as two conventional boxes using Feline Pine. Since introducing the CatGenie, the pine litter gets used less frequently, and mostly for urine. The Scoop-Free is seeing less traffic as well, however one cat seems to still like it. I have owned the Cat Genie now for 3 + years. I will never have a regular litter box again. The Cat Genie has been amazing! It works great! Plus it is healthier for your cat! Yes it makes noise but generally it is not in the same room as you so truthfully it should not be an issue! You can also set the Genie to manual mode. This way if your worried about your cat not being finished going to the bathroom, you can solve this issue by manual mode and this way when you know your cats sleep schedule have it go at that time. You also can set how many times the genie runs. My genie has already paid for itself. Think about how much you keep paying for litter by changing it and throwing it out. I buy solution twice a year and in the end it is still less than what I paid for litter in a year. My cat has never not once had wet paws either! The genie dries the litter after each wash cycle. Also as a heads up, Cat Genie has an amazing customer service. So if your machine is having an issue call them! I highly recommend this product to every cat owner!

Yes healthy for your cat, but awful for the environment. You're not supposed to flush cat poop down the toilet due to the potential for toxoplasmosis. I bought the Cat Genie for my cats. I installed it in my laundry room. The waste tube is in the drain of my water heater. THe plastics pallets are BIODEGRADABLE. I love it! The 2 things I don’t like is the pallets all over my condo, including in my bed!! And the second is that once in a while, tiny pieces of 💩 don’t get caught in the basket and when the drying cycle is on, it smells 💩. Considering everything, it is a very good product!
@TheBionicGoat3 жыл бұрын
How many cats do you use it with? I was thinking i could cycle it at the end of the day as I have a private bathroom where I already have my cats litter boxes. I'm worries that there will be a lot of poo and waste at the end of the day unless I cycle a lot, which i don't wanna do. Edit: i have 3 cats
@Lucy_Bayard_John3 жыл бұрын
For a while, I had 2 cats, but now, just one. My cat genie started after the sensor was activated. It is the only cat liter in my condominium. When there is a number 2, it is so smelly that I started the cycle. When it is operating with the sensor, it is using less solution. With the genie and the usual cat litter, there will be real cat litter that will gunk the genie!!! I would test the genie (no real cat litter besides it) with the sensor on. When the cartridge solution will be empty, evaluate the overall benefits. Bottom line one system or the other! You can scoop the poops directly in the toilet and start the cleaning process once or twice daily! You decide what you prefer. Contact me if you have any other questions!

One item not reviewed that may make the thing more cat-cozy is a two-part snap-in dome attachment for the box which creates a very cozy poop igloo that might also help contain odors. Would've been nice to see you try that out here. Otherwise, very good review.

I think that the accessories may be a more recent release. For instance there is a pet mat to catch granules, as well as side walls to prevent mishaps such as poor aim.

As in thinking I'm going to look into some details on it. I couldn't use any scented wash solution. Between allergic people and most of that stuff is very dangerous to the birds that also live with us. I'd also look into the idea if there is an exhaust of the heated air that could be ducted or filtered. I'm guessing no because my guess is it blows hot air into the bowl and not the other way around.

I have a drain and water connection in my garage where I keep my cats at night. So no issues with noise or smell. If my main priority is urine flushing, (I’m happy to scoop solids), then this should be pretty good for that singular purpose right?
@Square_Peg3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for making this review. I was seriously thinking about getting this litter box, but the wet paws, the lack of full cleaning and the length of time it is unavailable for use changed my mind about it.
@bobbysenterprises32202 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. I'm interested in these but suspect it wouldn't work for me. I want it to work but as you said the size of the bowl is so much smaller than even our smaller cat pan. Also the non absorbent litter would be an issue for our coon and Siberian. It's a shame. Our main box is in the bathroom already and the cats are fine with it there. I would be willing to plumb in a water feed, electric and a dedicated drain so it would avoid a lot of the things I can see that would prevent people from getting on board.
@bettyboop15244 жыл бұрын
The actual pan is so small, but the thought of that hose hanging over the toilet that I use grosses me out. Ick. If a human is using the toilet and your cat uses the Genie will the genie empty into the toilet with a human sitting there?

It could, definitely.

Yep, thanks for this reviews. I saw their video and suspected this. Without cleaning the granules and removing all material from the granules there will always be wasted granules. I have not created my self cleaning box yet but also , ALSO doesn't this thing have to be hooked with plumbing to a drain of some type ? What if your pets are not by a drain ? That is another problem I see for many including rescue groups.

I thought that cat waste was extremely toxic for our waterways, and that we weren’t supposed to flush there waste?
@AllAboutCatsYT4 жыл бұрын
Jane, cat waste (poop) very often contains toxoplasma gondii parasites, which are incredibly resilient and can survive a trip through a wastewater treatment facility, eventually making their way to at-risk marine animals. So, yes, flushing cat waste is not recommended and the Cat Genie presents a hazard to those sensitive populations.
@ThatsMyBlackOpinion4 жыл бұрын
Do you have to use certain litter type or a certain amount of litter? Sorry if I missed it in the video.
@AllAboutCatsYT4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes-the Cat Genie only works with the plastic granules that come with the system. You'll fill the bowl with a single box.
@ThatsMyBlackOpinion4 жыл бұрын
All About Cats Thank you for the fast reply! Would it wreck the device if someone placed regular litter and tried to run it? Someone in my household did that. It looks like clay now. Yikes!
@AllAboutCatsYT4 жыл бұрын
@@ThatsMyBlackOpinion It certainly could; the Genie guide says that you should never put regular cat litter in the system. Even if it doesn't wreck the device, it would certainly void the warranty.

Im just wondering with all these automated systems, is it only so people don't have to scoop anymore or are there other perks to it as well? Personally I dont mind the twice a day scooping, its maybe 5 minutes a day in total. I've got 2 cats and 2 very large litterboxes. One is in the backroom in my house and the other in the shed. (My yard is catified, they cant get out) I never have odor issues either (I also use petadore air eliminator with the one in the house)

I have three cats that poo and pee a lot. I currently have two litter boxes for them, and at the end of the day, there's so much waste. I just don't see this a feasible unless I cycle multiple times a day. This would work for me as the two litter boxes are right next to the toilet in my private bathroom. But since it takes so long to clean and cycle, I'd be cycling all day unless I want A LOT of waste to build up at the end of the day. My cats are really skittish and I'd worry all the cycling would freak them out, too. I am pretty tired of all the constant scooping and want an automatic litter box, but I don't know about this one. Has anyone used it for multiple cats?

What about the plastic granules that end up in the toilet, surely these flushing through the sewer into the ocean is bad for the environment?
@AllAboutCatsYT2 жыл бұрын
The granules are biodegradable and should be consumed by bacteria in the environment.

Wow I was super interested in this for our new home until I realized that it's just plastic being flushed, that wet paws will track urine all around the house, and the fact that sometimes poop is left behind and that you can smell it during the drying phase. 😖. So glad I watched this video. So very informative. You have saved me a great bit of disappointment. Thank you so much.

@connorstern84132 жыл бұрын
@@nikkilargo the wet paws issue was caused by having having multiple cats, and having manual cycles enabled. When there are multiple cats going in rapid succession, the "litter" will end up a bit wet. So it may not be suitable for a 1 cat household. I'm glad the litter robot is working well though!! i'm considering the litter robot 4... I just don't know if my 3 cats will like the closed in nature of the lid. the 4 is a bit more open though. Maybe I will get a cheap, manual closed in litter tray for them to try...

@@connorstern8413 I think you're right. Oh and whatever you decide on getting do give us an update, please! While I'm happy with one I've had for some time now, I've been eyeing this Kickstarter litter box called the Popur. I just like that it looks like it's easier to keep clean and am very curious about it. I've also had to have a few pieces replaced on my LR already so I'm glad to see that the sensors on the litter robot 4 are in a much better place than on the three connect. Please note, you are NOT supposed to use an extension cord for safety reasons, among other device related reasons! Note that you can also use a floor drain like a walk in shower if you want a completely automated hands free experience, in which you don’t ever have to flush, but *most* people routinely flush their toilets.

I cat sat for people that owned 2 of these and had 3 cats. The only problem I have had with it was it was CONSTANTLY running with all the cats using it. That grinding noise it makes is ingrained into my brain forever, much rather spend a couple minutes to quietly clean by hand personally. It also clogged during one of my stays and was a nightmare to fix. I've been sitting there for 5 years now and it has only clogged during my stays once so take that as you will!
