Last year I adopted a 7 yr old male who is truly the Ghandi of cats. An 8 week old female kitten decided to adopt us by showing up in our yard until the neighbor said we should keep her. My big boy welcomed her with open paws. He grooms her, protects her, plays gently with her. I’m so proud of him.

We adopted a 3-yr old male just yesterday and brought him home to our 2-year old brother/sister bonded pair. Of course, we had no clue how to facilitate the introductions but we were so lucky that our new boy is just so mellow and well-mannered. He immediately knew that he was the new cat in town and he set course to be respectful and non-threatening. Just over 36 hours later, our 3 babies are living in peace. Sometimes, you get lucky but also just use common sense to have a successful introduction: expect hissing and growling; have a place where the new arrival can be safe, give your current babies lots of love, watch everyone carefully (adopting during the holiday weekend worked to our advantage), definitely have separate feeding and litter box areas. And calm down the energy in the house; if the humans are keyed up, the cats will be, too.

My kitten was ready after 3 days and they all get along great! Im watching again as we are adopting my kittens younger brother. Exactly one year younger! Im allergic to cats so I treated myself to a Siberian. I live high in the Rockies so it's a good choice for the nasty weather we can get. I made him a great cat.

Thank you for sharing this post! The methods mentioned do take time and patience, but worked for us. I don't think you can rush the process and expect positive results. Backing up the steps may also be necessary and is ok. We took on my sister in law's deaf, 12 year old cat. We introduced him to our 6 year old male (who 6 months before lost his best cat buddy) very slowly. We followed the steps as described and supervised. It took some time, but both cats eventually accepted the situation, one another and learned to coexist, even sleeping together. There were points along the way when I did not think we were going to be successful, but our vet said "time is simply your friend" and we found this to be true. Please don't give up trying. We all need a place we can call home. Best cat wishes!

Around 6 months old, belly is shaved (after being spayed), not chipped. And I am slowly trying to get them acclimated to one another. 3rd day, girl cat is super upset, hissing and growling, boy cat today did a nose kiss to a kitten but the kitten hissed. husky doesn't care, she just wants to come closer and sniff and the kitten is terrified of a big, scary thing. we are trying to locate the owner with no luck so far.

Very helpful. We're at day five and we did our intro a little different. Our 1st cat saw the new kitten on day one and has seen her every day since. We keep the kitten upstairs and she has her own room with food, toys and litter. We have a pet gate at the top of the stairs to keep them separated by still able to see each other and get used to each other. We'll give treats and play with both of them around the gate and we just introduced feeding them around the gate at their dinner and breakfast today. It went pretty good. The older one was a little on edge but she did eat about half her food, so we moved her dish back to her regular spot so she could finish. So far things seem to be progressing nicely. Hoping to be able to get the gate removed for good within a week. Fingers crossed🤞

I foster cats and always stress a slow introduction whenever one of my fosters goes to a family with a resident cat. A lot of time things don't go as planned - the new cat snuck out of quarantine and the two cats saw each other. I suggested walking back to the previous step and a lot of people just decided to forego the rest of the process and wing it. They ended up making the integration a lot more difficult than it has to be.
@bmiles4131 Жыл бұрын
Mine had gotten along for years, then the younger one went crazy. My guess is it was the older ones are food obsessed and he’s a nibbler so they ate his food. Feeding them separately helped but he still went crazy and when he flips he gets on a shelf or under the bed and lung fu noises all of us if we go in the room. The cat he fights with will mostly ignore him but if he starts something that can’t isn’t having it so I get a ball of screaming merged tabby that I can’t separate. As a result, I’m down to time sharing the house. One cat is a lover, not a fighter, so he is the one allowed out all the time. I don’t know what else to do. Funny thing is if I feed them close to the door, the food obsessed cat will grab the other cats food from under the door and either pull it under or flip it over. So here we are in timeshare, feliway cat purgatory.

I just got back from a Humane Society very close to home. I went with my mother and I am using her laptop right now. Anyway, I went to the "special needs" section of the cat section. It literally broke my heart. We went there after my mother told me of kitten with a partially blind, with another type of genetic disorder, and last week when she went there, a couple were returning this kitten back as it really required special treatment and care. Anyways I decided to see this kitten but the good news is, that the kitten found a new home. I saw another, slightly older cat, that caught my attention, and literally wanted me to pet him and give him attention as I stuck my finger through the enclosure of it's cage as did another cat that just recently lost an eye. and is recovering from surgery. It really broke my heart so bad that I almost full-on cried and not even caring who saw me, a grown man at 5'11'' at 190lbs, and all tatted up. It affected me that much. I am planning to return and to adopt a cat. I just wish I could save them all. I'm really not a people person, but I do love animals and it makes me so angry that people would abuse such a defenseless animal, one of God's creations that we are to be faithful stewards of. I can't even finish this comment without tears welling up in my eyes as I think about my experience from earlier. I get paid next week so I will be returning and I will adopt a new cat that really needs a home to prevent it from being euthanized, I care that much. I encourage others to do the same. Thank you.

I had 2 cats - brother and sister (Tobi and Patchi) we lost Tobi them in August last year. Decided to rescue a younger cat, and we picked up Percy a week ago. Patchi is 4.5, and Percy 4 months. We set up a base room for Percy, and I’ve been sleeping in there with him, thought it would be a good way to get his scent on me. 1 day my partner kept Patchi in the main bedroom, to allow Percy to move around the house, before returning him to his base area. Next day, Patchi was out for her usual exploring and we allowed Percy to go into the bedroom and he had a wonder around. They did bump into each other though when returning Percy back to ‘his’ room - & Patchi did hiss at him. I’m worried I’ve unintentionally messed things up & won’t be able to salvage things

The seller insisted that i should not have closed doors and should just have like bars. So i followed her advice even tho i preferred to take it slow. Bengal got curious and approached the gate meowing, the ragdoll was actually hiding but got curious and csme straight to the gate and they locked eyes. Bengal got crazy while the ragdoll was really mellow and showed zero aggression. I have the ragdoll in my room and let the bengal roam freely in the remaining parts of the house. Ragdoll got rly comfy fast and sat in my lap and purred and bonded really fast on arriving day. So i slowly opened the door and have a gate, just to cehck what the bengal is doing. She was laying down on the couch, much calmer, no hissing or growling. Ragdoll approach gate and layed down and purred, they had eye contact. But i did notice that the bengal was shaking at times. Sry for my bad english and text wall, just not sure where to go from here, just start from scratch?

Currently on the pet gate step, they eat fine together. Yesterday I tried to let them interact a bit more after eating to see how they would get on. It seemed fine and I gave them some treats during that as well but my original cat seems kind of aggressive in body language even though there wasn't hissing and there was a growl once cause I think she went too close to him when he was getting the treat. Technically we have finished this stage but I am really really afraid of introducing them. They are both not very distractible and I know they won't be interested in playing when the other cat is around. Please if anyone has any idea what and how to do things let me know

Hi! I just adopted an 8 year old cat, and isolated her to my room. She immediately wanted to leave and explore more of the house so I would scent swap and let her explore. The resident cat is 3, and also a female. The problem is, the resident cat is NOT food motivated, so getting her to come to the other side of the sliding door when I feed the adopted cat is tough. We went ahead and had them see each other thru a glass door and hissing and poofing was involved, but eventually when we tried to get them in the same room the staredown happened, and my adopted cat chased the young resident cat. This has been a tough 3 weeks, so any help would be appreciated!

Not food motivated? I heard of those cats. Rare but still. My cat looses her mind when I serve her boiled chicken pieces. Maybe you can try to grab grab a more hearty kind of meat and slow cook it in a dutch oven untill the meat falls from its bone. Still only meat and water. Perhaps the more pungent smell will be of your cats taste. You may also be lucky with intestines from your local butcher. Perhaps your cat only fancies the stuff with a punch. Though, just a thought. Perhaps your cat has a slight food allergy. Maybe you can try a mono proteine food.

Was about to start introducing them, after a week of isolating the street cat in case of spreading diseases. But the shelter group recommends i wait until new cat is vaccinated. Oh well! Also that new cat may be defensive right before and after giving birth. She's a stray found too pregnant to spay. I will foster the kittens until adoption and keep the mom :)

So my situation is this: I have a 5 year old female Mozie and I just got a new kitten he's about 11-12 weeks now and I've had him for about 2 weeks. I have done all the steps, seperate room, feeding on either side. (the feeding part isn't consistent as my cat isn't a big eater so I put her dry food there right by the door and she grazes when she's hungry (not sure if that's good enough maybe every other day she eats when he eats behind the door). So now it's been almost 2 weeks she has shown "interest" and sits by the door and paws under the door. My kitten is Mr. confidence so I don't see any issues with him, it's her she's super skiddish in general so I guess that doesn't help. Although we did have our boy Smokey and got her as a friend.. there introduction was ok and she really warmed up to him (he unfortunately passed away and she became depressed) so I feel a little discouraged now. but I'm at the point now where we put a screen door up. And she peaks around the corner at him and is very weary of him and does this pounce and scream/meow at the screen. This is the first full day of screen so hoping all goes well.. Any tips to help a scardy cat bond with a confident kitty? She does do better with cats so I know that's not the issue.. Maybe because she's more frightened she will just need more screen time to warm up? Ugh I feel so sad and want them to be besties

These are all purrfect scenarios 😄 what if we don’t have time to prepare? I just brought my 7cats to my parents home and they started fighting for territory so I’m trying to find designated space for each of them which is challenging enough . Now on top of that yesterday someone abandoned a 3week old kitten on our doorstep . Not enough space but couldn’t let die . So I had to move two of my other kittens to the balcony to clear out a room for the baby, now they are all mad and fights increased
@analyticalchick3064 Жыл бұрын
Do you have a video for bringing a cat home when you DONT already have a cat? I did that. I closed the bathroom and extra bedroom door, but he still had the main bedroom and the living room/kitchen combo room. Our apartment is pretty small. I wish I hadn't tried so hard to feed wet food at the beginning because he barely ate for the first 3 days or so.

I don't understand how single people with a flat are supposed to follow that advice that's all over the Internet. Or if I need to introduce a kitten to the resident cat. Am I supposed to leave the kitten all alone in the bathroom for hours at a time, or sleep in the bathroom with the kitten and listen to my resident cat banging on the door all night?
@AudreyC3795 ай бұрын
Yup, same. 😂 I mean seriously, not everyone lives in a typical or large home with like 4-5 bedrooms with an upstairs and a downstairs. 🤦♀️

@@OlanaMissurawith respect, if your home is that small then it probably isn’t right for you to have two cats living there. Your financial situation isn’t their problem
@OlanaMissura4 ай бұрын
@@BillyBob-kr9xd your answer seems to correlate the financial situation and the size of the space I inhabit. It's a questionable assumption: I might have a huge space with a single door. And you don't touch on what a single person living by themselves is supposed to do with this advice, restrict themselves to no more than one cat? It's a reasonable enough strategy to get the cats to know each other, I just wish people retelling it all over the place also acknowledged its limitations (instead of what you seem to be doing: telling me I'm not supposed to have cats if I don't fit into the requirements).
@BillyBob-kr9xd4 ай бұрын
@@OlanaMissura If your financial situation were better, you’d live in a bigger space, no? If you don’t have a large enough living space to accommodate the complex social and physical needs of an animal, let alone two animals, then you shouldn’t own them. You are not owed a pet. You should not have pets if you cannot accommodate them. Sorry!

Maybe I've been lucky but my new kitten was thrown in at the deep end, and within 2 days both had accepted each other. 2 weeks in and they play fight and chase each other around. Young kitty seems more worried about strange humans than other cats.

if they had a bad interaction at first, this means that i can't do this 5 steps anymore? or if even they had a bad first interaction this 5 steps can still work? cuz i got a kitten and i have another cat, and a didn't know how to introduce them and the older cat the minute saw the kitten hissed at her, nothing happened but i'm afraid that this first bad interaction will mess up their relationship in the future
@AllAboutCatsYT Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry too much about this "bad" first interaction-a little hiss is nothing that will ruin a relationship. Go ahead and start from the beginning again, and everything should be just fine. :)

Hi Mallory, thank you for all the videos and information you share with us! I recently brought home an eight-month-old kitten. We created a base camp for her, and she settled in pretty quickly, with-in a day or two, she was playing and exploring all parts of the space. I have a three-year-old resident cat we adopted a year ago, and since our kitten's arrival, she has been very curious. We swapped rooms with both cats to get each other's scent. I was trying to follow the steps. However, I went a bit too quick and allowed them to be in the same space together, and my resident cat became defensive and hissed at the kitten. Is it ok to go back to the scent swapping and continue working the steps because just the sight and hissing was a terrible experience for us.

A new round of re-introduction has been 1 and half months. However, my old and anxious cat has kept cautious and distance from the new kitten. They are still isolated living in 2 different room. The old and anxious one always lives in a bigger area and has more time to stay with her owners. I am not sure how long this process will take to get to the 3rd step “eye contact”. I am here providing a data point.

@@FF-by6ci it did not work for me in the end. My cats cried loudly when alone in their rooms and after a month I decided to let them free. The old cat is a sensitive kind and would hide under the bed always when friends come by. I think personality matters or the early growth experience. A female cat was left on my street last year just before the cold weather so I too took her in. I didn't know she was pregnant, she had 6 kittens, one died and I gave two away 2. So now I have four cats, mother ,two males and one female. They are all now fixed and get along great. Now one person whom I gave a cat gave me back the cat about a year later, how do I reintroduce the cat back to the four I have without having a cat war.

how do you create a safe space for the new cat to go to during supervised visits? one cat can easily chase the other up a tree, and if one cat is elevated, the other cat feels understandably threatened. Any suggestions on creating safe escapes?
@alexisjones9267 Жыл бұрын
This sounds so simple in theory, but my car went into his sanctuary room (my new bedroom) and within a couple hours was trying to escape to go check out the house. And in all the trying to escape, which he has done several times now by jumping over a 5ft board and pushing the door open, he has gotten eye contact with the resident cat. He gets super stressed out being stuck in a room or even part of the house all day. I even tried the site swapping and both cats were more stressed.
@AllAboutCatsYT Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, any chance you can let the cats spend time in the same room as one another, but supervised? You don't want to control the situation at the cost of over-stressing either cat.
