Generally, if you have been given the Boolean expression, then it mentions the no. of variables in the function. e.g F (A, B, C, D) = A' B' C + ACD' + ABC' So, from that, you can know the number of variables in the function. If you have been given a direct K-map, then from that also, you can find out the no. of variables in the k-map. ( from 2- variable, 3- variable or 4 - variable k-map) I hope, it will clear your doubt.

There is rule for creating K map which says we have to group as maximum as pair (here group of 4 instead of 2). If we take only one pair and one squad you can find the equation becomes larger, which is not desired
