A good tip for those without a ton of available battery or solar is to put ice in your fridge before you leave for a camping trip. I put large bottles of frozen water in my fridge. They slowly thaw over the period of your camping trip and by doing so absorb heat and therefore reduce the amount of energy/electricity your fridge needs to stay cold during your trip.

I was an appliance tech, and after burning a few fridge liners, and having to replace a Customers fridge a couple of times, using a heat gun (hair dryer), I found that a Steamer works better at defrosting a freezer. It is much safer, and believe it or not, it does not produce more water. You will find, that the steamer will defrost faster, than a hair dryer. You can find a steamer at walmart for about 35 bucks.

Another great video that's easy to understand. I found that when first turn on my fridge I place a bowl of ice cubes in both the freezer and fridge which lowers the air temperature immediately and gives things a nice jump start in the whole cooling process.

One suggestion I have is if you don't plan on boondocking it and your going to mostly be plugged into power, you can get yourself a rig with a residential style fridge. They are the same type fridges you would find in a house. The other benefit is you can get a bigger fridge and be able to store more food which means less trips to the supermarket. Keep this in mind when you are deciding on your rig. Another idea is to put fans both on top and an the bottom. Put both on automatic and set the bottom ones at a higher temperature than the lower ones so if your camping in a hot climate that the second set can kick in when needed. And if the temperature level can't be adjusted, the second set could be put on a switch for when there is excessive heat and extra cooling is needed. This way the top fans are then the main cooling fans and then have an auxiliary set for when that extra cooling in needed. One other thing you might want to consider is when you use a fan, that means that even more dust and dirt is going to get pulled in causing you to have to clean the passages more. To help prevent this, you could buy yourself one of those furnace style air filters and cut it to size and put it on the inside of the lower vent so it can trap some of the dirt and dust that gets pulled into the air vents. Especially if you like camping in really dusty places. You can use a can of compressed air to blow the filter off in between replacements.

I heard a ‘cool tip’. Place a flexible cutting board placed in the back of the freezer. It will accumulate the ice on it and then you just take it outside and shake off the ice. Tada

Looking forward to the new trend for 12V Compressor Fridges. Good battery bank, solar or gen and it's even perfect for boondocing. Furrion is making a RV specific 12V fridge now which is built for heavy use and it's super efficient. PLUS no more worry about the antique absorption fridge catching fire or blowing up.

Fans work well agreed. I built a fan set up from used computer fans connected to a small inexpensive harbor freight solar panel on the roof next to the vent. Fans run during the heat of the day and off in the coolness of night. Fridge operates 100% cooler and I never have to worry about on/off switches or power.

Had problems with our fridge in the slide not cooling and so one day I removed top vent. Surprise! The manufacture of trailer had not cut an opening in the paneling used in compartment for the top vent. The was about a two inch opening at the top of the vent opening to exhaust the heat. I CAREFULLY used a vibrating saw to cut out paneling, and then I installed the exact fan you showed, but used ty-raps to hold the fan to exhaust grill.Very secure now, as supplied hardware would not work with my grill design. I dropped the control wires and power wires down the side the burner is located then installed to power supply. I use in manual mode on highest setting to remove hot air fast. Velcro taped control and wires to side of compartment to secure during travel. Works GREAT!

The circulation greatly improved just how evenly things would keep cool. I did buy 2 computer fans to install on the roof vent as well but have not needed to use them so far. Every few years I highly recommend cleaning your ignitor as you showed. Really helps.

I added two fans from old computer towers,they are 12 volt and draw low amps,I placed them in a foam wrap around the plastic housing and the fans are the perfect size to place between the tubes of the cooling chamber,it draws in air and are powerful enough to push the heat out top vent,this getting coils to get rid of heat more efficient simple mod wired in with 12 volt circuit and put a switch that I can turn on or off,toggle switch is lighted as well so you can tell it's on or off,as for noise, practically none as the fans are very quiet 🤫,and move air very well.i could of bought fan unit but had extra fans from the old towers and just put them in,can boon doc,and power consumption is very minimal,freezer gets down to 10 degs. And fridge stays around the 36 deg.range mods been in for 3 yrs now and we are very pleased with this.

Great advice as a camping trip with family coming up soon! I recently researched some info on my residential refrigerator unit to bring costs down in my new place. Not sure feasabile for rv's bit meatloaf size, square and retangular glass baking dishes for cheap I switched to for easy see thru, easier clean up and organization. Soon I'll be purchasing canning jars of different sizes to get away from chemical laden containers. Trick is not to block any of the freezer/fridge vents especially the ventilating shelves. Glass is an excellent insulator. A nonbattery temp gauge I purchased for $6 has allowed me to check and keep the temps in accordance with online guidelines as 'efficient'(keeping foods from spoiling? energy efficient?) as freezer temps recommened at 0-5degrees and refrigerator at 35-40. A digital battery operated temp control would bother me about batteries wearing down&needing replacement. They are easier to read. As for the fridge bulbs, most are 40W. Have seen a few online at 20W. Maybe for rv's? For the average online sell price for about $10, I am going to replace that blulb with an LED 4.5W bulb producing the same amount of light(lumens?). Take this bulb and later use it for the oven bulb which I rarely use whenever it burns out. I rarely use my oven...yr info was very informative, so I can only hope my 'two cents worth' helps along in the areas of energy efficient consumption for those using rv's have a concern.

One thing we do to help the fridge get down to temp quicker and keep the temp down is, we will freeze water bottles and then put them in the fridge. We will also put water bottles in the freezer and then rotate them to the fridge when those have melted. We've also used dry ice at times to help with the temp. Where we camp in AZ it can be up to 118 outside so even the inside of the trailer doesn't get below 90 degrees. When we are setting up, the temps inside can be around 140 from sitting in the beating sun, and we find introducing ice to the fridge helps quite a bit.

Awesome, I just found 3 small fans similar to what you showed in a strange contraption at Goodwill for $7.49 and installed as per your "instructions" and in 92F outdoor temp the freezer temp has dropped from 17F to 8F in 7hrs and still dropping, fridge has dropped from 47 to 38. Still dropping also as it's getting late and cooler outside. THE FANS ARE A WONDERFUL IMPROVEMENT to the 22 year old Norcold 1200 fridge. Thanks a bunch for this great advise and all your videos.

Have a small Dometic with internal freezer in my RV. In the manuals it is mentionned 38 degrees at close to the bottom is the target temperature. I've been wanting to improve heat flow behind the fridge with seeing so many fires started at the fridge from overheating. I will take a look under the roof vent for blockages and I'm going to order that Titan double fan to install up there also. And I will clean what I can reach behind the access panel too. I have a long handle static duster I could try to slide up in there. Previous owner put a small computer fan behind the access panel and has to be manually turned on and off by taking the rear panel off. Its laying horizontal and seems to blow air up to the roof vent (if its even strong enough to make a difference). Like you said, it probably just mixes the cool and hot air around and not really removing the heat. Thanks for posting this video, I'll feel better knowing I can get some of that heat from behind the fridge to flow up and out!

Maidendg We just had an RV parked directly next to us catch on fire 2 weeks ago, the fire started on the back of the refrigerator. The owner was away at the time, we could smell the smoke but couldn’t figure out where the fire was till the flames started coming out his refrigerator roof vent. I broke his door window out to get inside but the smoke inside was so thick I couldn’t see 3” inside the door. I emptied 4 fire extinguishers into the outside refrigerator vent but it did no good, the fire was already established in the wall behind the refrigerator and above the outside vent. All I could do was spray water on the roof to try and keep it contained from burning every RV in our row till the fire department finally arrived. It was a total loss. Exactly like you said, “so many fires started at the fridge”, when I see burned out RV’s I’ve noticed it’s almost always the outside wall behind the fridge where it’s burned the worse.
@Maidendg
@Maidendg 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonyw9429 Yikes! That was brave of you trying to extinguish the fire. It does seems to spread quickly! And the thing is you never know if and when the fridge will catch fire. I will be going full time soon and I won't sleep good until I either change to residential fridge or convert the existing fridge to 120/12volt HVAC. There is a place called JC Refridgeration that does the conversions. I haven't priced it yet but I do like my wood front original Dometic fridge so it sounds interesting. I have a feeling it would be cheaper just to buy a residential though plus it would be larger, plus I heard they keep ice cream hard!

There is a really neat product called a "fridge defend". It has a temperature sensor to turn off the fridge if it overheats. It also will turn external and internal fans on and off to circulate air over the cooling could and inside the fridge. Kind of pricey- I think I paid around $275, but MUCH cheaper than a new RV & 'stuff' inside it. I have not had a fire- so "see, it works" (G)

One of the best videos on explaining the rv frig. We live in the desert Southwest. Anytime the outside temp is in the 90’s or above our frig does not cool so well. We installed two 12v computer fans in the top of the vent. Also, we have the small fan in our frig to help circulate the air. If we plan on taking our rv out during the summer months, we will start our frig two nights before. Another quick idea that works temporarily is to sit a fan outside the bottom vents. It will save your food on those really hot days.

I put a fan on the back of one once, on top of the fins, and it helped. Don't use that fridge anymore though, as it was on it's last leg..which is why it needed the help in the first place haha. Anyway, I have noticed something with the ammonia gas fridges.. If the wind is blowing good outside, sometimes will force heat to go back down through the vents, which can cause the fridge to heat up a bit inside.

Personally I think the best option is to replace or rebuild your fridge for a modern compressor unit that runs on less than 5 amps via solar panels. Gives you all the cooling you can possibly need and they work just as well when it's hot. Absorption fridges are to 70ies tech. If you can afford it, go for a new compressor fridge - it makes a huge difference.

Here's a good tip for ya to help increase efficiency and that is to get a circulation fan to aid in moving the cold air around. I have a 8 cubic foot Dometic fridge and I use it - now going on 11 years since new back in 2010 is when it was bought. The purchase of the battery operated fan sure made a huge difference in operation cycles. The only weak things about these fridges is the out side temperatures for the cooling unit. They don't like extreme temperature swings meaning operating them above 30 degrees to minus 30 degrees below 0 as the solution in the cooling unit becomes unbalanced - meaning the water ammonia mix ratio becomes out of phase or unbalanced.The mixture is - Water - Liquid Ammonia - Sodium Chromate and Hydrogen, although I think the newer units are starting to use Helium

The "absorber" (water) absorbs the refrigerant (ammonia vapor) flowing out of the evaporator coil, which carries the heat it picked up from inside the fridge/freezer. Heat just flows from hot (your stuff inside the fridge) to cold (your evaporator coil).

Great job as always! I do have the 120 volt JC compressor unit on the back of my 1200 series Norcold. I love it.

TL;DR - Absorption fridges are an answer to the question of "what appliance is 100% worthless and I have to use an Igloo cooler to make up for its shortcomings." Compressor fridges (and freezers, and air conditioning units, and ice makers) all use the gas compression cycle, because ITS limitation is the amount of power you can feed it. Absorption fridges will work fine in colder climates. That's about it. Fundamental facts: Heat is energy of excited molecules. When we move those from the area we don't want them to be (inside fridge, bedroom, vehicle cab, etc.) we call it "cooling" but really it's removal of heat. Absorption fridges don't use a lot of power, so while they are better at power consumption, they are not good with temp differentials of more than 20°F inside-to-outside or cooling quickly. Compressor based fridges use a lot of energy to force a phase-change, therefore either storing or releasing energy, and a lot more compared to absorption fridges. If you want to stick with your absorption fridge, don't stick dollar bills in the door. Just get two big igloo coolers. Keep ice in that one and don't open it often. Keep food products you want safe for human consumption in the other. Use the fridge for maintaining not-too-hot temps for medications, dog food, and your fishing hat. If you do feel inclined to stick dollar bills in your fridge, you should first note that most fridges con't have a vertical door slot that goes in and out. It has two 90° bends and insulation. The insulation compresses when you close and latch the door. The dollar bill is a cheap bar stunt.

There seems to be more manufacturers going to 12V/120V compressor type refrigerators. More efficient but drain the battery faster.

In my experience 12v cooling is only for while in transit / engine running. If you stop for more than 30 min unplug your trailer from the vehicle. I forgot once and it killed both the trailer and vehicles battery in about 40 min!

@@digitalguru42 No the 12v cooling runs a compressor style, like your home refrigerator. Newer compressors and coolants make them more efficient without draining the batteries as rapidly. In the days of R22 refrigerant and large heavy inefficient compressors they really were not viable for long term camping. Better Batteries, improved solar plus the changes I listed above have made them better and more efficient than the absorption refrigeration systems traditionally used. And unit leveling is not as critical a factor. I see the absorption systems being replaced entirely in the near future.

Thanks again for another great video. You do a great job explaining the technical aspect. I have a question for you, somebody told me that you’re supposed to put your water bottles in the fridge raider. Well, you’re cooling it down the day before you go camping. Is that true? What do you think?

I think ice build up in the freezer is not a big deal unless you live in it full time. If I go on a 2 week trip, ice doesn’t concern me at all. I will be shutting it down and cleaning the unit when I am done with my trip. No need to be overly concerned about it. I probably open my fridge 10x a day at least. Can’t imagine camping and not diving in to get my beers! Lol whoever said to only open the fridge no more than 2x a day! Love your videos! Keep em coming.

Jared great presentation and information on the fridge. Was wondering when defrosting do you turn off the unit? Also I noticed you still have your eyebrows and hair, I guess you disconnected the afterburner option on the hairdryer. Great fun buddy

Yes, we turn the unit completely off and put the food into an ice chest. We usually try to wait until we need to go grocery shopping so that it is less food in the fridge and freezer.
