"Allahu Akbar" (God is the Greatest) was written in 1955 as an Egyptian military marching song, popular during the Suez Crisis in 1956. After the rise of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to power in Libya in 1969, it became the national anthem of Green Libya (officially the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya). It remained the national anthem till Gaddafi's death and the end of Green Libya in 2011.
