Allan Arkush on THE THRILL OF IT ALL

Well on his way to leading man movie stardom, TV favorite James Garner steps into the shoes of Rock Hudson and Cary Grant as Doris Day’s latest partner in her increasingly popular series of glossy, sophisticated comedy vehicles. Dick Van Dyke Show creator Carl Reiner provided the witty script and one of the cleverest trailers to be run on TFH. Garner and Day would reunite on Move Over Darling in roles initiated by Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe when it was called Something’s Got To Give.

The first of two films with James Garner and Doris Day with Move Over Darling. The second film directed by Norman Jewison, who went on a run including The Cincinnati Kid, The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming, In the Heat of the Night, The Thomas Crown Affair, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rollerball, And Justice for All and Moonstruck. Arlene Francis for me takes the picture. This is one of Day's best comedies following Pillow Talk and That Touch of Mink.

Thank you, Mr. Arkush, for those wonderful comments. I loved your description of past summers and what a fun summer movie used to be. I just saw this movie again on TCM. I hadn't seen in in one sitting for a very long time and I think I appreciate it more than ever. I think Doris Day and James Garner worked well together. He was really funny. I miss good character acting, and this movie has it!
