Just watched it and loved it so watched it again straight away. I think the reference to the ash tree getting its leaves early and shedding them quickly as being in some way significant. In what sense I haven’t a clue.

Give Ed Wood an A for courage. PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE is manifestly pro-peace and dares to suggest our government may lie to us about the alien menace and everything else. What other Fifties director stuck his neck out like that?

I had the greatest experience watching this one because it was shown as a double-feature with "Ed Wood," which had just come out at that time. This was pre-internet (for the most part) and pre-DVD days, so I and most of the audience were largely ignorant about "Plan 9" and the making thereof. So first we watch Burton's biopic that shows the filming of this masterpiece with moments like Tor Johnson bumping the grave"stone" to reveal it's a cardboard prop, and we're chuckling about how absurd it would be for the director to just leave it in the completed film. THEN... the film ends and we watch the original "Plan 9," and we are SHOCKED at how this all was actually released to paying audiences. What we thought was Tim Burton's over-the-top stylized characterizations were actually dramatic recreations of Wood's crimes against cinema. It was glorious! But the biggest laugh came when Eros goes into his long-winded speech about the solaronite bomb, and a gay guy in the back of the audience yelled out, "What-evah!"

This film has never deserved to be called "the worst movie ever made". I've seen far worse, including recent blockbuster budget garbage. I've seen far worse from crappy modern horror movies on Netflix. Mind you, Plan 9 is a mess. But it's an earnest, well intended mess. And it has charm, and is still entertaining. If Wood had had the time and budget, I believe he probably could have made decent, perhaps even quality films. He developed his infamous "one take" approach, because he had literal days to make a movie for a low-brow production company, on an almost non-existent budget. And even so? He still churned out some memorable, goofy but entertaining films. Also, Dana Gould? Your attempts at humor here, fell flatter than Plan 9's acting, bro. Making fun of someone for having "the whitest sounding name ever"? That's so 2024, that it actually transcends cringe to something else entirely.

I was also introduced to Plan 9 From Outer Space in the snotty and snobbish Medved brothers book. But many of the movies featured in the book were not widely available. It wasn't until it aired on TNT's Monster Vision hosted by Penn and Teller that I finally got to see what had been crowned the "worst film ever made." I was pleasantly surprised how much fun it was. It's worst sin is that it is completely incompetent and that Ed Wood has no talent as a film director. One of the best descriptions I've ever heard to describe Plan 9 is that matter what time you watch it "it always feels like three o'clock in the morning." All the errors in continuity, cardboard headstones, the space ships on visible wires all contribute to this unstable state of mind while watching it. I don't think it deserves that hyperbolic title bestowed by the Medveds. Everyone has their own definition of "bad". I'm very forgiving when it comes to cheap effects and oftentimes find them charming. But my own definition of bad is something that is painful.to watch. I'd rather watch Plan 9 on a twenty-four hour loop than see Titanic one more time. Say what you want about any Ed Wood movie but they're seldom boring, although Night of the Ghouls is probably his worst.

Can’t be called the worst film ever made when it’s made with passion. Maybe it’s the passage of time and the lowering of standards that keeps this one from feeling like that?

Movies like Plan Nine remind me of a one-eyed, three-legged dog with a raggedy ear, but a winning personality. You can't help but like the scruffy little mutt. I agree with what you said about sincerity. It makes me feel like Linus in the pumpkin patch.

Landis got it a bit wrong, Henry Hull actually wanted to be recognizable in the makeup because the script called for other characters to be able to recognize his character as the Werewolf. That’s dedication.

I originally saw this, as I did all of the Apes films, when they played in a marathon on TNT or whatever, when I was a kid. It's a well enough made film, that has its moments, but the "oh this other Ape scientist you've never heard of before now, managed to figure out how to fix the human spaceship they somehow recovered from the bottom of a lake, even though the technology is far beyond anything the Apes had, and he and Cornelius and Zera magically managed to figure out how to pilot it and escape their world's doom BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT ALL THAT IT'S FINE!" bit, was so brushed over lol. Also, the movie becomes SUPER dark and depressing (as did, to be fair, Beneath and Conquest). The ending traumatized me a bit as a kid.
