I find myself thinking back to the 2007 World Cup. Australia put 100 points on Japan easy. My word how far they have come!!!! It has been an absolute privilege to watch the Blossoms emerge on the world stage as genuine contenders. Makes me think of similar strides the Pumas have made. What a joy to see Rugby Union spreading across the globe and more nations stepping up to make this great sport truly a world game. Hats off to Japan! An exciting future for the game awaits us all!!!

The early 90s to early 2010s were a strange 20 year period where some teams got the jump on professionalism before others. That's how you end up with South Africa putting 90 points on Wales in the late 90s, and the big results against Japan that you mentioned. Yeah they've done well to catch up but a lot of it is more to do with getting back to a truer balance as existed before rugby went professional in 95. It's actually the big 50+ thumpings in the 90s and 00s that are the anomalies, as the big unions and nations had all the benefits of professionalism before the others.

Our commentary here in Australia need to take notes … this is how it is meant to be. Neutral throughout the whole game and complementing teams on great plays whether it be the wallabies or the opposing team. As an Ex Otago player, I'm not only delighted for my old team mate and Coach of Japan Jamie Joseph, his Otago team-mate Tony Brown but also young Warner Dearn's whose father Grant also played with in Otago. Grant must be so proud of his son who scored an amazing try against the country of his birth. I know a loss is a loss, i get it, but the way Japan played, the respect from the players and the crowd was something to be so proud of. Sometimes its about more than just winning, but about heart and good sportsmanship.

Jamie getting the extra time with the Blossoms, since Shag left and Fozz took over, has done wonders for him that, I think, would not have set him in such good stead back then. He is absolutely ready to become the next AB's Head Coach now, leaving a vacancy at the Blossoms for Robertson to cut his teeth as Head Coach of an International set-up. Robertson coaching the Blossoms would, I think, be perfect for all concerned.

@@KernowekTim yeah, sure, Japan and the rest of world rugby are there for NZ to exploit by moving coaches around to ultimately benefit NZ Rugby! It’ll only ‘be good for all concerned’ because you’re a Kiwi speaking from the position of the arrangement enabling you to line-up Robinson to coach the ABs in a few years after Joseph has had his time. Rather NZ-centric thinking on your part which treats Japan as a convenient feeder team to groom future coaches. In fact rather how NZ has always treated the other SH nations; there to be used by way of generating higher broadcasting income and to have the ‘honour’ of playing the Ab side every season but never considered equals.

I'm an AB's fan al day long, but the best team did not win today. Reminds me of the Scotland game where Scotland had a chance to win it save for a bad pass from Hogg (a theme sadly for such an otherwise phenomenal player). If Yamanaka holds on to the intercept, he's in. If the forward pass to RTS is called then, Japan are up by 5 or 7. With that momentum, skill, and belief, I really think they could have won this game. All that being said, what a massive level of growth from Japan. It's only a matter of time before Japan beats them. Ireland suffered losses like this and look where they are now. Well done Japan - eloquently put in the end. Very heroic! This is a win for rugby. I am an ABs fan as any other Kiwi, a passionate one at that. To see this, both scared me, but gives joy because a small rugby nation like Japan gave the mighty ABs a good run for their money. To our boys, on to the next job.

💯. My wife and I love Japan and have been countless times, with her speaking fluently. But I’m a Kiwi and love the ABs, however I’ll never forget the elation of watching the Blossoms best the Boks in 2019. A sporting moment for the ages! And it’s a weird weird feeling to actually be cheering Japan’s tries in this game more than my own team’s
