I had a 99 Montero Sport 3.0 V6 4x4. I loved this truck . I lifted it by turning up the torsion bars up front and put 33 inch tires on it. The vehicle could absolutely go anywhere. great video man! I miss these vehicles..

Owned a 1994 Montero in North Dakota, it was excellent in snow and mud. 1994 had AWD option that we used all winter, switching to FWD only in deep snow. Left it with our niece, she may still be driving it!

I think he meant switching back to RWD. There were never any FWD Monteros.

My dad purchased a 2000 Montero before the bodystyle changed. Had great service with the vehicle but it ended up smoking like crazy at 140k miles. I owned a Diamante in the late 90's and it did the same thing. My dad is a car guy. He always purchased the unique rare vehicles.

As many have said that 3.0L engine burned oil.... but besides that it appears to be reliable! :)

This Mitsubishi platform won 1st place 7 times in the Dakar Rally is no coincidence to the testimony of its quality. I used to own the Endeavor, and still wish I hadn’t got rid of it.

My 1990 Monty 3.0 has 273,000 miles on it and still starts up sounding like that.

I'm a fan of old Toyotas (daily drive a '94 Xtracab pickup, 4x4 22RE 5 speed) and Jeeps don't appeal to me since I see too many of them with too many bros on the road, but yeah that XJ Cherokee w/ the 4.0 is the one exception. My mom got a white '92 or '93 Cherokee Laredo in '95, and it was excellent. Only reason she sold it 7 years or so later was to go to something newer and more luxurious. Sorta wish they would've held on to it so that maybe I could've taken ownership, but I didn't turn 16 till '04 and didn't have the money to buy it from them anyway. Plus, it was an automatic so I would've had to swap it to 5 speed, which was out of my budget/means at 16 lol.

Nobody I knew drove a Mitsubishi in the late 80s. I don't think I even knew they existed until some time in the early 90s, when they flooded the radio waves with ads, trying to increase sales. I probably also wasn't really aware of (or at least do not remember) Mitsubishi's links to Chrysler when this vehicle was new.

I knew one person with a Colt, and it was then I figured out Mitsubishi and Chrysler had "relations" with each other. I also had a good buddy who went from a 240Z to an Eclipse, and that was an awesome car.

@@AllCarswithJon Now that you mention it, dear old dad had a friend with a Colt, circa 1980. The only things I remember about that car are that the smog pump seemed almost as big as the engine and my 1970s go kart was faster. We hatched a plan to mount a grappling hook launcher on the front bumper so a passing semi could help get it up to highway speed.

I prefer the 1992-2006 Monteros. Better full-time 4WD systems. After 1994, they could seat up to 7 people. Works for me.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse and 3000GT were such cool cars back in the day. It makes me sad that Mitsubishi is struggling in America.

Now that the current Mirage is going away, the Montero definitely needs to come back as a full size SUV. The Montero Sport should come back as a midsize SUV. The Endeavor needs to be brought back as a 7-seat FWD/AWD crossover.

Jon, since you like looking at boxy SUVs from the 1980s and 1990s, I would look into the Retro Review on the 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser. It's pretty interesting.

From your comment, I'm guessing I mis-spoke in the video and then missed it during editing too? :)

The styling looks dated because this first generation was launched in 1981 and by 1989 was long in the tooth.. 2nd generation came in 1991. 1999 gen 3 was a clean sheet monococque design. Also it's so narrow because of japanese tax laws at the time.

that 3.0 V6 isnt that good ...had one in a 88 Dynasty they burn oil and timing chain issues ..they get noisy too.. drove cab many years they put them in chrysler mini van s.. they were awful ..the chrysler 3.3 and 3.8 were awesome engines wth 4 and 500000 km on them ..

I've heard about the 3L several times now from viewers.... I have (had) a good opinion of them, and understand they burn oil but were still overall reliable. :) Appreciate the view and the comment!

@@AllCarswithJonMy mother had a 1993 Dodge Dynasty. It had the Mitsubishi-built 3.0 liter V6. It was very reliable for her. She kept it for years until it broke down. It worked out very well for me and my mother.
