I lost a parent four months ago and find this music both exquisite and consoling yet almost unbearable in its beauty. Allegri’s Miserer is truly divine. I simply cannot turn it off, it expresses all the longing and helplessness one feels in the realisation a much loved and brilliant parent has gone forever. For all those who have lost a truly loved person, stay strong, treasure the memories you have and try and make them proud. Now I’m crying again. ✌🏻❤️🌹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

I am sorry to hear of your loss. When I lost my wife almost 5 years ago, this music for me was both consoling, yet uplifting. As Catholics, my wife and I loved this music, because through her illness, we couldn't always make it to Mass, so we would live stream Mass and listen to this music afterwards. I will pray for your healing and peace.

We did gain quite a bit from the Enlightenment, but it is helpful to hear some musical reminders of what we lost. It's hard to imagine modern composers trying to reproduce the "angels singing from heaven" effect that these composers did such a good job of creating.

The biggest mistake was trying to replace the divine with the rational. In the proper context rational thought is wonderful, but we turned everything on its head and are reaping the rewards.

13:04 Heartbreaking. This high C really stopped my breath for several seconds. Thank you so much, Brilliant Classics, and have really great holidays and a prosperous year 2020! Just love those "straight singing" choirs! I can't stand modern operas since they contain too much pitch vibrato for me. This choral music however is perfect.

@@MenelionFR well, the original sheet by gregorio allegri isnt the same of the song we hear today, there are some differences, especially the high pitched voice part, which is abstent in the original version. Then there is the second version, which is a bit different from the first, and there is the third version, the one we hear today. The high pitched part was added by mistake during a transcription. There is a documentary here on youtube about it

It's amazing how well the dynamic of the recording space works for composers like Palestrina and Allegri, but doesn't at all for Tallis or Byrd. The cross-relations and rapidly moving figures are lost in the fuzz of the echo.

None of that trashy overblown 19th-Century kitsch comes within a mile of this, no matter how big they make the orchestra. The Devil take the whole big-orchestra establishment.

These are standard texts, and they are easily found on the internet if you are really interested. What is given is sufficient to find the Latin poems and the Bible texts. Most singers are familiar with them as are many of the people who listen to this kind of music. You would do yourself a favour by looking them up and making copies as there are many other choral arrangements of these texts through the ages. Peace.
