is there a way to come out of the groups to a headphone amp? i want to send a mix of drums, bass, vocals, among other things to a mixer so the musicians can make control their own mix.

You could use the Group or Channel insert points to take a pre-fade send of channels and/or groups to an external mixer. It depends whether you are using group assignment for recording or PA at the same time. But then you need a whole load of extra mixers, one per musician. This is all a bit old-hat now - I use a Behringer XR-18 which allows for multiple independent cue mixes, with multiple simultaneous tablet/PC controllers (for FOH and monitors), along with powerful FX processing and multichannel USB output for recording, all for £350.

Hi, I recently boght a used 24 Channel Version. If I sart the console up, I get some random Signal on the master, but everything is switched off. What could it be?

You'll just have to isolate the fault (if it is a fault) one step at a time: - Turn all mic trim controls fully down and all faders down. - Switch off phantom power to all mic channels. - Turn all tape return and aux return volumes fully down - Pull all faders down on the console - channels, buses and mains. - Mute everything you can! - Pull up the master fader - if you still have noise, it's some sort of breakthrough - either faulty electrolytics/ICs/transistors, noisy power supply voltage (unusual as it's a simple analogue regulated supply), or noise from the MIDI muting processor getting through on power lines (that may change in nature as you select different mute patches). - If that's clean, work your way through each input (mic, line, tape return, aux return), unmuting and pulling up the fader and switching phantom power on and off. Plug a mic into each mic input channel as you test it, bearing in mind that if you turn up the gain trim on a mic input channel with no mic plugged in, that will create noise. This is normal behaviour: unplugged channels should be set to minimum gain and fader off, muted if possible. - I had to replace the IDC / ribbon cables in my console after about 5 years as the IDC connectors became intermittent. These cables link all the module cards, and could cause some noise if it makes one or more bus inputs open circuit. - The muting PCB on my console was full of dry joints from day one: this manifested itself as random mute recall behaviour, which I only discovered a year or so after purchase, when I finally started using MIDI muting in earnest. I had to send the module back to Allen & Heath for replacement. The internal modular nature of this console makes it reasonably easy for a tech to fix when the area of the fault is isolated. @@FarewellOldFriends Thanks, I just had to start the console while holding the clear button to reset the Midi mute section.

That's good to hear - hope the muting processor behaves itself now. BTW did you know there is a rechargeable Ni-Cd battery on the mute processing board - if that is dead, you may have problems with mute patch memory. Good luck!

Mutes only, I'm afraid - mixdown is still an "all-hands-to-the faders" procedure!
