Allen Ludden was a perfect game show host. So caring, so kind. He really cared whether somebody won or lost. Password was the first show that I saw him on. He and Bill Cullen were the real deals of game show hosts. They are missed.

Allen Ludden was a class act, I remember him being the most kindest gentle genuine person I’ve seen hosting a game, he wore his emotions on his sleeve, he is the yardstick that all game show hosts should be measured against

From "College Bowl" through all the "Passwords" and more, there was no better game-show host than Allen Ludden. Bright, witty, friendly- he had it all and he could even sing! One of the few TV hosts I'd have liked to meet. Thanks for this great clip!

What happened to his "The Big Bundle" opening from Futureworld (1976 movie with Peter Fonda)? Not only known for game ahows, he was also known too as being Mr. Betty White for many years. RIP Mr. Ludden - you are still missed even today!

True fact: When Allen said "Hi, Doll" on his shows, he was saying hello to Betty White's mother.

One hell of a tv personality. Allen was gone a few years before I was born but I got to enjoy him in all the Password reruns over the years. You can definitely tell he was an amazing guy.

First time I saw a Ludden-hosted Liar's Club episode. USA used to show reruns, but only the Bill Armstrong-hosted eps. I do remember the Irish pub set.

Password Plus is the only show I've seen hosted by Allen Ludden. I wonder what other shows he would've hosted or participated in if he was still alive. Nevertheless, this is my favorite of all the classic game shows from the 1970/80's and is the one game show I hope gets rebooted the most.

To Zachary Alderton: Allen Ludden died in nineteen eighty one of stomach cancer. I bet that not many people knew who Allen was married to he was married to Betty White. And Allen and Betty were merried for almost eighteen years and they stayed together until Allen's death in nineteen eighty one from stomach cancer

That College show at the beginning didn't even SOUND good. But Talking Pictures didn't look too bad; I'd never heard tell of it! I've never seen the set for that Password All-Star one either (I thought I saw all the Password games) I never heard tell of Stumpers or Smart Allecs either. I've seen Liars Club but I never knew Allen Ludden hosted it. I didn't know Allen Ludden had so many game shows. He's like another Alex Trebek!

Talking pictures & smart Alecks were unsold pilots, much like joker's wild Allen only did the pilots. Password all-stars didn't last long it wqs a pretty complex all celebrity tournament format and virtually the episodes are believed to have been erased. It was an attempt to boost sagging ratings on password that didn't work, so they switched to a format with 2 celebrities and 4 contestants for the final few weeks to try to save it. No such luck. 😔 Interestingly, GE College Bowl: When Password came up Allen couldn't do both GE College Bowl and Password for whatever reason, he wanted to stay on College Bowl but his agent convinced to do Password instead. History would have been much different.... Beyond Password Allen didn't have many long lasting shows, I guess he kinda got typecast.

@marcpower4167 another fun fact: when CBS greenlit TJW, he was considered as host, but he was hosting the ABC version of Password at the time.

According to Wikipedia: After Ludden was diagnosed with stomach cancer in early 1980, he took a month-long leave of absence from Password Plus for chemotherapy treatment, with Bill Cullen filling in as host. On October 7,[8] he slipped into a coma while on vacation in Monterey, California. It was initially reported that he had suffered a stroke, but the coma was actually caused by high levels of calcium from medication taken to help fight the cancer. Tom Kennedy took over as host of Password Plus, and although Ludden hoped to return to the show, his cancer grew worse and he never returned. Ludden died in Los Angeles on June 9, 1981
