Before interstate 95 went thru this was an overnight stop on the way to NY area or Florida. Lots of places to eat, stay and gas but not much else. Folks pretty much drove in, stayed and then left the next morning. (see hwy 301 north and south route) Kind of like route 66. Time was you could hardly cross the street due to the traffic. of course that was before 1970.

This is correct. I lived there from 1961 to 1970, and it was a thriving little town. I-95 killed all of that, hence the abandoned motels everywhere.

I grew up in Allendale and nearby Fairfax. It was pretty bad back then in the mid 80s to mid 90s, but even worse now. I wouldn't want to go back and call it home again.

@@MysticsModels US-301 used to be a big travel route through the eastern USA before the interstate highways were built, so the decline was slow but steady since the late 50s when I-95 was built. While I suppose that was the main reason initially, I can't help but think the more recent and drastic decline is probably more due to international trade. Most of the larger mills and plants in that area close down and are not replaced, so there is just not much there in the way of employment.

@whippy107 Oh, that totally makes since. This phenomenon has hit a lot of small manufacturing towns, probably since NAFTA and globalization of manufacturing.

I had a great Aunt who lived there. I would occasionally visit in the 80's and early 90's. The last time I went through there (2007ish) was on a prisoner transport ( the PD I worked for had warrants on a guy at Allendale's prison). The town looked even worse than I remembered (the inside of the prison was worse). The SCDC prison is the town's largest employer and contributor of new residents (let that sink in).

That's incredible! One thing I learned after I filmed this is that a main highway used to go through here, but when the new freeway from SC to FL was built, this highway became obsolete and traffic died out as well as the commerce it supported.
