The ultimate example of this is what occurred after German unification. I think the USA has been able to maintain hegemony due to its geographical isolation from other powers. It doesn’t have to contend with being in as much of a closed system like that of the European powers.

Slight correction at 2:00 States don't always "act" in order to "balance power". States can also *not act* (known as "omissions", rather that actions, known as "commissions"). Not acting is far more difficult to spot, especially if carried out by an "alpha male" or "hegemony". In a nutshell, a state "just saying no" also has consequences.

Great videos! Thanks. A few questions: How do states measure power? Their own and other states? Is it a quantitative or qualitative thing? Is there a maximum to sum of all powers? Wouldn't a third option to balance the power is to reduce the other states' power? For example: sabotaging, or slandering, etc? About alliances... Since a state cannot reasonably enforce such agreements in another state, how is the trust established? What happens if one state decides to break the alliance in a very critical moment? Power may look like balanced during the time the alliance is honoured. But in reality, it may give false confidence to parties (Byzantine Generals e.g.)

Things like building a big defence machinery (air craft carriers, anti missile systems, etc) and their testing can not be hidden efficiently as there is media , spies , government reports , etc .also alliances between 2 countries also can not be hidden . I feel all in all there are very minimal surprises in international arena because there already exists a trust between states so states are by large alert.

I was in Berlin in Dec of 89 when the Wall came down. This was a dramatic and unexpected change in the balance of power. It was a festive time in Berlin but my guess is that no one was more worried than the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon... The US had reached a fork in the road. One way led to a multi-polar world where the US would have to bargain, compete and mediate between a number of big powers losing some battles and winning others... Or the other way to a unilateral world, to quote GWBush, “It's our way or the highway” This was the way the US chose and I believe it was a fatal mistake ...
