I played Nero in the mid/late 90's and it was nation wide once. It is to bad territory are even a thing. At one point I played two nero campaigns out of one site, and traveled an hour down the road to another at times, some people traveled 2 hours down the road to a 3rd chapter. that way during larp season you could play every weekend the same game and keep your story going. there was even a guild that had a black market where chapters from the east where selling stolen goods in chapters in the west because it was a nation wide guild doing shady stuff. it was great. do have to say now I'm jumping around to smaller games and that is fun as well. unfortunately i think at this point the Die is cast, the systems are getting so drastically different. the weapons and props people are using are getting different. i don't see one game ever getting that big again its a lot of small community. and the worst thing i am seeing is the bulk of the "alliance" or "nero" style games games appear to become 18+ which is going to cut out the younger larpers. more then likely if another system dose get big it will be a different type of larp that is allowing in the next wave of larpers.

So update 1 year later alliance is at 14 pins on the map and from what I gather second hand seems to be a much better environment at the chapter owner levle. The game is currently going through The 2.1 Beta test Which will offer a serious upgrade to the crafting rules making crafting dedicated characters more viable ( At least that's the hope anyway) As a veteran Nero player who recently jumped fence I have to say it's a much better system, Seeing many of the flaws in the neurosystem fixed the fixed by the alliance rule system using things I proposed and tried to get through in Nero For years while getting stonewalled was rather heartening. As it stands I think alliance has a bright future, can't really comment on the refuge crowd.

Good video. I am sorry to hear that Alliance went through this, so soon after NERO's last explosion. I agree that infighting and schism's are holding the NERO/Alliance style LARPS back, but I don’t believe they are the key factor holding back NERO/Alliance style LARPS. Rather, the structure of NERO/Alliance style LARPs makes the consequence of schism more damaging to the hobby. Schisms in tabletop RPG groups and popular TTRPGs going out of print are both fairly common. Neither of these have held back the TTRPGs as a hobby, largely due to the low cost of adaptation required by players. Buying into a new game or finding a new group to play with are relatively inexpensive monetarily, even if the emotional cost can be high. From the many people I know who play NERO/Alliance LARPS, both the monetary and emotional investment in a given game are high for players (event fees, costuming, sweat equity for the chapter, experience and powers gained for a character, etc.) and for chapter organizers (rental fees, insurance, time, personal investment in the chapter, etc.). To boot, the friends I have spoken with also feel much of what they have built cannot/will not transfer to another game. When a schism, be it at the chapter or at the game level happens, both players and organizers lose a lot, and are consequently less likely to join/run another game.

Thank you for your insight. But I think there was a misinterpretation. TRPGs are cheaper true, but the extra games came naturally as stated. They arose from people naturally wanting to play a different style of game, like science fiction, more combat or RP focused, games, and more. For Larping, if you look into a lot of our larps (at least in the US) most, if not all are broken apart by schisms like what happened to Alliance. Not as bad, but they still have happened in a non organic manner. This causes all the problems you listed, and instead of choosing to do something different, they are forced to make due with a lesser version of what they had. Forcing yourself to do something lesser instead of choosing to do something new is a huge problem. THAT is the core of the problem, although yes money can be a disincentive since larping can cost more depending on the type of larp.

This is very interesting I know it would be complicated but I'd like see u cover the amtgard name rights scandal now that that court case is coming to a close

Interesting idea. It would be a break from Nero stuff. I will look into it.

Oh man. This was great. I know my local LARP broke off from NERO in the early 90s but I guessing that one wasn't one of the five. I get the feeling there are lots of local LARPs that fractured away from NERO. If your still do these, I would love to hear some information about the clusterfuck that was Conquest USA. UGH. Conquest is amazing and that would have been great but yeah never happened.

Awesome documentary. I'm planning on doing something similar once I'm retired from my industry. Not trying to tell you your business but gonna offer a critique; avoid the use of "we'll get to that later." This statement tends to put off the audience and if you actually don't get to it later, it can lead to credibility questions. Just address the issue or avoid it altogether to avoid any confusion. I really enjoyed to show as I've heard of Nero but never played it. I started in Amtgard and played Sovereign Scrolls for years but am no longer active.

Thank you for the tip! Always looking to improve and I also started in Amtgard. I have not played Nero, but after playing Alliance for a year I learned a lot about Nero. Especially from researching the break.

@@larpacademia2662 There are still Alliance chapters out there and active. One of those Coming Refuge chapters (Denver) joined Alliance.
