Bomberguy....thank you so much for posting these historical videos. My Dad was in the infantry in WW II but I love all aspects of the war. In this day and age it doesn't matter who won or lost or what the politics of the day were. It happened,lets learn from it and move on. Thanks again!

@helenheather. My Children are at Junior school and have learned about WW2. They have recently learned about the Blitz (with input from local people that experienced the blitz) they were told and discussed the fact that German children were bombed as well. Also they were made aware that the war was against Nazi's not Germans. I think the Teachers were not 'narrow' in their approach to this subject , and I am impressed with their sensitivity in the way they delivered this subject .

This policy was abandoned on 15 May 1940, two days after the German air attack on Rotterdam, when the RAF was given permission to attack targets in the Ruhr, including oil plants and other civilian industrial targets which aided the German war effort, such as blast furnaces that at night were self illuminating. The first RAF raid on the interior of Germany took place on the night of 15 May - 16 May.

The UK had a policy of using aerial bombing only against military targets & against infrastructure such as ports and railways which were of direct military importance. While it was acknowledged that the aerial bombing of Germany would cause civilian casualties, the British government renounced the deliberate bombing of civilian property, outside combat zones, as a military tactic.
@33vortex15 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 262 was capable but in the situation that the Luftwaffe faced a waste of resources. What they needed so desperatly was high-altitude performance in order to combat the vast allied bomber formations, which the 262 lacked. Impressive as the jet was, piston a/c had still not played out their role. Had they produced as many Ta152s as they did 262s it would have looked very different in the skies over Europe.

Nazis started terror bombing in 1939 in Warsaw. "The free use of indiscriminate bombing of cities by Germany - Warsaw in 1939, Rotterdam in 1940, Belgrade in 1941 and above all the bombing of British cities ("the Blitz") in 1940-41 - hardened British attitudes towards bombing Germany."

When World War II began in 1939, the president of the United States (then a neutral power), Franklin D. Roosevelt, issued a request to the major belligerents to confine their air raids to military targets. The French and the British agreed to abide by the request, which included in the provision that "upon the understanding that these same rules of warfare will be scrupulously observed by all of their opponents"

Germany's economy started some recovery in the early 1930s, and Germans did work and have money, and they did or did not donate that money to whomever thay wished. The world-wide Great Depression was still in existance, but people still had money to some degree or another.

Hiroshima was an important staging port for the war in Manchuria, and Dresden had large railyards used by the Wermacht to transport troops and materials. Sure bombing was horrible but what else was there? Nonagressive stances in the thirties had only made things worse for the Allies.

"The main characteristic of a sociopath is a disregard for the rights of others." I would say Stalin had little to no value for human life. He viewed human beings in terms of statistics with no regards to their humanity. He was paranoid and was beaten severely as a child by his father (which would impact his emotional being as an adult). So yeah i would say he was a sociopath.

How sad that 65 years after the events, and probably long before most of you were born, people are hurling pointless vitriolic abuse at each other. Don't you realise that slogans and abuse serve no purpose. They do not bring back the millions of dead in Europe. Certainly many of those millions were evil but countless millions were just ordinary families dreaming of the day when their children would grow up in a world free from such verbal abuse.

@TheMrPangloss "And what makes it even worse was that Japan was ready for peace long before the a-bombs....." It is hard to defend that statement because a) After the first A-bomb, the Japanese cabinet had people who wanted to continue the war because ' the Americans probably had only one bomb of that kind' b) After the second bomb and the Emperor's decision to surrender, par of the military revolted because they really, REALLY wanted to keep fighting.

@TheMrPangloss "The west wanted the maniac Hitler and the psychopath Stalin": Do you have ANY real reason to think this or is it just an attitude formulated over time? Given that the West - out of a lack of willpower borne from unease over the Versailles Treaty, plus not wanting to repeat the terrible ordeal of the First World War & also seeing Hitler as a bulwark against communism - allowed Hitler to rise to power before then going to enormous lengths to stop him, it is very inconsistent.

Of course western industrialist helped Germany and also their own nations & other nations including the USSR during the 1920's & 1930's. @Elberiver11 Jews to Madagascar? It's an old slogan, perhaps even humorous, invented around the twenties of XX century. Do you think that Hitler had an excess of gasoline? I do not know which children were screaming louder. Those in Dresden, or those in which Mengele experimented. But one thing is certain: The sooner we finish this six years massacre, the better. The high price, but even greater benefit. Let Dresden say: "Danke, Vatti."
