Radar doesn't work like that. Radar doesn't magically detect everything nearby, it still needs to "see" and recognize a target. Imagine being in a pitch black room, with a flashlight, and you need to find a fighter jet thats a few km away from you while being unable to move. Thats the best approximation of how it looks like for radar. And now imagine trying to see that basketball instead. (of course, radar is more sensitive and has way stronger "flashlights", but the distances are also longer. There is also background clutter from radio, the sun, etc )
@TakenWithout
@TakenWithout 20 күн бұрын
the thing with that is in order for a RADAR to detect baseball sized objects moving that fast you need to tune the radar to well... detect baseball sized objects. Imagine a bird crosses the RADAR before ducking back out. Another bird pops up into the radar & suddenly to the radar system 'sees' a bird-sized object moving at several hundred kilometres per hour.

It still wouldn't have worked if he hadn't (a) known that bad weather had kept SEAD assets in the barn, (b) ignored SOP to turn his radar on a third time instead of packing up and scooting and (c) illuminated the F-117 at JUST the right moment. The F-117's stealth also still worked - it went completely undetected until it had already accomplished its mission.

In an interview, the same pilot said that his mistake was opening the bomb doors much earlier than necessary, and that he should have waited until he was over the target.
@Mrblueridgeman
@Mrblueridgeman 21 күн бұрын
Makes perfect sense. When doors are opened RCS goes way up, allowing a lock with targeting radar. It’s one thing for relatively low freq search radar see something, but targeting radar is much higher frequency, where the stealth’s RCS is much lower until you open those weapon doors.

From the position where he was coming from and from when he was detected what he said kinda contradicts what he should have done. He came from the east and was detected by Zoltan at the west. His bombing mission even looking directly over was 30km away, which was farther from the furthest point of detection. Also these are GBU-10 they got some range

Thats not possible, the pilot has no control over when the bomb bay doors open. It's all computerized and automated to have the lowest delay of the doors being open and the bombs being dropped (less then two seconds). I'm not sure where you heard that but that is not true in the slightest.

Rumor has it that after this plane was shot down, the Chinese managed to obtain quite a bit of it and took it to the basement of their Embassy in Belgrade for examination. Less than 6 weeks later, the US "accidentally" bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. It almost certainly was not an accident. Search for an article in the "Diplomat" magazine that will explain in detail. Even the BBC Has covered this.

This is highly likely a myth, for the simple reason that the wreck location was known by the US almost as soon as the crash happened, and they had plenty of opportunity to bomb the wreck. They chose not to do so, as they felt the stealth technology in the nighthawk was by then well researched, and there was nothing any power could learn from the wreck itself. IMO the bombing of the chinese embassy was absolutely an accident. War is complete and utter chaos, and militaries, even the US one, tend not to be very precise even at the best of times. The real "stealth" innovation behind the nighthawk were the computer models and mathematics that made it possible, and that's not something you can reverse engineer from a plane. You need to read some papers on electromagnetics for this.

The Elites and the corrupt are never punished and our young die or become fucked up for the rest of their lives. This is the same here as it is over there. @Semendrija123
@Semendrija123 20 күн бұрын
@@noblearmories1265 I can see that you are confused, so I will give you few details about what actually happened. For the first three days of the war most of the SAM units operated in radio silence, meaning they didn’t communicate often with the main command post, and they didn’t turn on their radars most of the time. As a matter of fact they have turned on their P-18 search radar for the first time since the beginning of the war approximately one hour before they have shoot down the F-117. So the notion that they had some “James Bond” type of intelligence from the mole inside the NATO headquarters, or that they knew the flying routes of the F-117 is just stupidity of the first class! You also can’t distinguish the radar tracks to be able to recognize the type of the aircraft in question, so based on that you can’t specifically make an ambush for the particular type of the plane (in this case F-117), even if you were able to make some patterns (which was not the case in reality). What is worse, the P-18 radar had some resolution problems and was unable to provide the data for distances that were less than 60 km. They had detected multiple targets at the distance between 70-80 km when they have turned the radar on, and one plane started to approach their position, but they had to turn the radar off in order to sort out the problem with the resolution. The second time they turned the radar on, that one target was at 23 km distance and entering WEZ. They have waited for target to get to 16 km from the launcher and then they turned the firing radar on. First two attempts to lock the target were unsuccessful because of the great angular velocity, and the fact that they have limited illumination time to just 8-10 seconds in order not to get hit by the HARM missile. They were able to lock the target from the third attempt at the distance of 11,9 km. Missile was launched and it hit the target that was flying away from the SAM site at the distance of 14 km and altitude of 8 km. The time it took the missile to hit the target was about 28 seconds, and the whole processes lasted around 84 seconds. The reason why I’m giving you the details about the time in seconds (that was needed for the downing of the F-117), is because of retarded claim that the main reason F-117 was shoot down was because of its weapon bays doors?! The position where the F-117 pilot dropped the bombs was around 40 km away from the place where it was shoot down! In reality F-117 takes less than 5 seconds to open the doors, drop the bomb and close the doors, so it is impossible for the SAM unit to use that short time window to shoot the plane down for two reasons. First reason is obviously not enough time for the whole sequence of detecting, tracking, launching the missile, and hitting the F-117, because if the doors were the main source of detection, after less than 5 seconds the radar would loose the lock, and the missiles would go stupid! And the second reason is the distance, because S-125 Neva doesn’t have the missiles with that kind of range (far less than 40 km), it is that simple!

This is overdramatised. The F-117 will not maneuver like that as it would give further radar reflections back to the targets, it also does not have the T/W to perform like what is shown. There was also not missile dodging scene with them chasing him. As far as the source from the pilot shows, he was not aware any radar was tracking him or firing at him (no wierd SAM warning) as the F-117 has no RWR. He only saw the missile exhaust trails at the last second, the first missile missed his cockpit and the shockwave coming off it's nose buffeted the cockpit, the second hit him.

And was not used on the aircraft activated long before the time of this incident in service. So though it may have had the ability initially, it would have voided stealth quite seriously if both were deployed and would not have been used in bombing runs where stealth was a key factor. And from the story of the pilot himself he had no idea he was being tracked though he knew they were there. He only new he was being shot at seconds before the first missile narrowly missed him.
