ATS Diesel makes an Allison conversion that doesn't require grinding the block and its compatible to the existing computer with no programming needed. Base price approximately $12,000 for a direct bolt in and "plug and play" electrical.

Thanks for the great vid, which I just found. Have talked to Dave at CA a couple of times in the past 2 weeks and am about to spring for the Allison for my 2000 24 valve which has the 47re. I see no comments here about trucks that old, but Dave says no problem. I notice ATS only starts with a solution for the 48re. Used to race my truck (15-18 years ago), would do 1/4 mile in 13.5 seconds. SINCE then, went to compound turbos, even bigger injectors ("200 hp"), and run about 80 psi. At least 100 hp more than when I raced. I had everything ATS had to offer- billet shafts, valve body, 5 star torque converter. Anyways, fully built 47re. I've snapped 2 input shafts, and have had additional failures, the last one towing a 10,000 lb trailer to Alaska. Anyways, I estimate I've got about $20,000 in that tranny alone. The last decade I have NOT been running extra power- too expensive! Only 180K miles, but massive rust. Now in the last week, hauling firewood, tranny slipping, trouble shifting... I'm done with the constant $2k-$3k repair bills. Sorry for the rambling, but happy to see your process! Really surprised to see comments here about how strong the 48 is. Scratching my head on that. SO looking forward to (very likely) swapping with a built Allison.
@TheRoostersGarage2 жыл бұрын
A lot of the comments are in regards to truck pulls, etc. but I'm pretty sure those get torn down and rebuilt pretty often. 350 feet is one thing, pulling a trailer across the country is another. I know CA has done older trucks - they've been at this for 20+ years. Your truck sounds like a beast! That's what I love about diesel trucks, you can race it, then pull a trailer to Alaska. I don't see any funny cars or NASCAR trucks pulling trailers around! That's a lot of money put into a transmission that keeps having issues. If you go with CA, they will treat you right. There's not many companies left that treat customers well, but CA is one of them for sure. When I picked it up after having to ship it down to them, KC wanted me to call her when I got home just to make sure everything was good even though I was spending a week in Florida before going home. I'm mostly stock on my truck, but it had been through a weight loss program before I bought it, then I upgraded the turbo when the factory one started acting wonky at 220k. I finished with the Allison swap November of last year and ran it for a while before uploading the video so I could also report how it was going after many months of use. I've just been learning the new transmission and how it behaves in different conditions. I don't feel the boat behind the truck anymore and pulling up the boat ramp I was at 1200 rpm instead of the 2000 I was at before the swap. My old gooseneck trailer that I haven't yet weighed pulls great now. The old transmission always felt like I was dragging an anchor, but with this one the power goes to the ground. Heck, I've even spun tires with the gooseneck hooked up while pulling out onto a road.

Biggest difference between light duty ( gm) and medium duty( class4,5, and 6 /4500ect) Allison programming is the torque converter clutch locks have way through 2nd gear( fills like 2-3shift) and stays locked down to 15mph . This reduces Trans Temps and improves trasn life exponentially, and gets rid of the soccer mom buttery soft shifts. It reduces temperatures so much that both my Trans builder and CA C required that I rerouted the cooler lines to go out front first then the liquid to liquid ( big log on the side of the cummins) to warm the fluid back to operating temp, Allison programming dose not allow learning below 148°f Trans temp. Dave ( owner of CA Conversions ) was very good with assisting me getting all the little details figured oit.
@TheRoostersGarage2 жыл бұрын
In my kit they have a thermostatic bypass that routes the fluid back into the transmission until it reaches a certain temperature. That's the thing mounted underneath the transmission and they explained the reasoning to me as well. The transmission controller from CAC uses the Allison programming. The shifts aren't soft and the torque converter locks up in 2nd gear. Pulling my boat with this transmission is a world of difference from my last transmission and it's only about 5000 lbs or so.
@daviddroescher2 жыл бұрын
The difference between CAC and my builder was that Holen Fox transmission, was to use the liquid to liquid on the return line to bring the Trans up to temp at the same rate as the motor . I have -20-30f Temps to deal with and the way you have it setup it won't warm up for me . I did add a 20k btu cooler on the "to cooler" line and a missimoto thermal oil bypass(160°f) to bypass the big double pass cooler for loads builder requiredupgradingthe lines to3/4". My builder strictly works on medium duty trucks/ busses he built it for 2k tq don't care about hp as 1st gens make 3:1 (tq:hp) and top out at ~600hp/1800tq with a race VE pump 400hp/ 1200tq with stock pump. A p pump making 400hp is only 800tq due to fixed timing. Agen well done . It took me about 1 month to do the install wille workin 80-90hrs a week working on Fed Ex Freightlander delivery trucks( sorce of my cores). Trans tunnel had to be pushed up ~ 6" and widened ~9"on my 91.5 2wd it's very tight no room for a 4" exhaust between the starter and frame so I ran it through the finder and down the outside of the frame.
@TheRoostersGarage2 жыл бұрын
@@daviddroescher Liquid to liquid? That’s cool! I don’t have to deal with that kind of cold here in Tennessee. I wish diesel stuff would be rated in torque instead of HP, even tractors are rated in HP and its crazy because they have so much torque and the HP number is pretty meaningless. @TheRoostersGarage2 жыл бұрын
And see I heard just the opposite. I had lots of people tell me there's no way to actually make the 68 hold a lot of power, and if you do make it hold it won't hold it for long.
@wyo_garage202 жыл бұрын
That’s absolute BS. There is no disagreement here, the Allison is head and shoulders better than the 68. If someone tells you otherwise, they are a fool. Now, what people would typically say is build the 68, because financially it’s more viable. With an Allison conversion being ballpark $10k, that’s for a STOCK Allison. And a built 68 is $7-8k? Now, the Allison doesn’t need much to hold serious power (ever seen the shafts of an Allison?? Game over), they do need upgrades to clutches and converter to reliably hold power. And tuning is absolutely key; there was a day when the big Duramax trucks all ran a 47/48 re because transmission tuning wasn’t figured out enough to hold power. No one, and I mean no one, swaps an Allison out for a 47/48re anymore save maybe the absolutely dedicated racers. And I can’t think of any off the top of my head...
@jamesrobinson58012 жыл бұрын
@@wyo_garage20 that was definitely a passionate response...look, Im not a Transmission guru. Im going off what I physically have seen and hear from experience. I have yet to see an Allison swap at the Pulls so far. Though I only know a few Hot Shots, Ive asked them and they've never seen a swap for over road done. Now I do know of 3 trucks running built 68's that had pumps swapped, VB modified, some crazy clutch talk thats beyond my knowledge and a few other mods that involve cooling with heavy fluid flow. Two of those I don't believe have ever been disconnected since the build or tire replacements from their loads and both are I believe in the ball park of 180k-220k miles so far. They both haul custom build Toy Haulers for their crawlers and travel near every Friday to Sunday with tons of spare parts as well. Both pushing way more than me in the power range. One is pushing +800lbf⋅ft (02' 24V)and the other guy is up closer to 950lbf⋅ft (early 6.7l). I know these aren't "CRAZY" numbers and easily obtained however....The 3rd guy is an azzhole to his truck and beats the crap out of his auto (launching near every light, donuts, power braking, back and forth D-R-D-R while stuck in mud engine still under a little boost, tug of war on Asphalt, blatantly beats up on his 68) and its held up to the date with no issues. He likes to brag on his $6k "Bullet Proofed" trans he had built. Now he isn't pushing crazy mods and I don't know the extent of his work aside from injection and turbo work. I believe its all external mods but either way he beats on that poor truck so bad it hurts my soul. Aside from this useless info, Im getting at, I feel if the Allison was that great of a swap, Id see it more. Money isn't an issue for the group Im with but atleast here locally they all shy away from it and build the 68's. If not they swap for the NV5600, ZF6 or variations of the Fullers.
@TheRoostersGarage2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesrobinson5801 @wyo_garage The Allison 1000 is a scaled down transmission from their heavy duty line. The 68 started life in a minivan, then was scaled up to the 545RFE where it did very well. When both the 68 and Allison 1000 were made the shaft sizes weren't really changed. The input shaft size on the 68 is pretty much the same size as the input shaft on the 545. I'm not pushing crazy mods either. Stock injectors, CP3, and a street tune but it can push another 200 hp which I never hit until I had the Allison in it because my 68 was on it's last leg. I don't care which transmission people want to go with. I chose the Allison because it's an industrial transmission and the Cummins is an industrial engine. Mating industrial with industrial makes sense to me. Plus having the 3rd gear safety lockout was a huge plus. When I take this to Texas rattlesnake hunting, I am not crawling under the truck unless there's fluid everywhere. Having that extra safety protection is key, plus this is the biggest vehicle on that ranch and pulling it might prove difficult so keeping it under it's own power was one of the major reasons I went with the Allison. I know guys love the 48's, and I know there's a ton of tuners who can work with the 68's. Not too many tuners for the Allison and truly I think that's why you don't see many swaps. I chose CAConversions because they use the Allison industrial programming. I've heard of way too many GM's running GM programming killing Allisons. Mine locks up fully at 15 mph and shifts hard. I'm okay with that because I don't drive a Cadillac - I drive a truck and I expect it to feel like a truck. Everyone has their own opinions and I'm not here to sway someone one way or the other, just to show what I've done.

@@jamesrobinson5801 Yessir, very passionate because I literally live and breathe these things daily. Dodge/Cummins trucks all day long. I don’t own a shop nor work at one, just a passionate guy. I don’t intend to come of rude or anything so, I hope I didn’t. That said, the 68 really is a great transmission for its use. The issues it has are (largely) a result of throwing more power at it. Lots of power in 5th or 6th and roll into it? Recipe for failure, there simply isn’t much room to add adequate additional clutches to hold so you have the same clamping force as stock. But it’s a proven good unit, most people have little to no issues with them. The Allison swap is rare because for years there has been outright bad info, one guy pops up and claims he’s got it figured out, and some guys choke down the price and have issues. That guy disappears, I’ve seen it time and again over the years. Plus, if you’re a hotshot guy, running factory stuff is almost a necessity. Because you don’t want a custom Frankenstein creation when you rely on that vehicle daily. Down time trying to figure out what you have costs thousands. It’s easier to roll into a dealer with a failed built 68, get a stock one swapped in to get you by while your built gets worked on and then put back in. An R&R is literally a couple hours to a day tops for factory stuff.

How you liking the Allison and how's it holding up. I'm thinking about doing it on my 03 cummins
@TheRoostersGarage2 жыл бұрын
I'm loving it! No issues to report. I recently developed a bad boost leak and as soon as it happened, the transmission unlocked as it sensed the "extreme load". I'm still trying to get that fixed, but truly nothing bad to report at all.

Thank you for the video. A few weeks to get this done seems reasonable. Anyone know if this conversion would work in a 2000 Ram Cummings 2500?

Just a quick question: Is the adapter to extend the transmission back to the transfer case long enough that a Gear Vendors overdrive/underdrive box could be added? Im guessing the front drive line might have to be lengthened. But it would certainly make it easier to keep the engine rope in the top of the torque curve.
@TheRoostersGarage Жыл бұрын
No, it's to fit the adapter shaft and studs that adapts the back of the Allison to the Dodge transfer case. Some T case models are used on both Dodge and Chevy and you could swap the input shaft in the T case as long as the bolt pattern lines up. This one I don't believe was used in a Chevy truck.

Man, this is a lot of work for a dodge. But good on ya, you finally have a transmission that can properly support that Cummings.

I work with heavy equipment and with diesels engines the size of your pickup and the 5 inch exhaust is way over kill for such a small engine .

I know, but it sounds better than the 4 in my opinion. It’s got a deeper note. I went from a rusted out 4” to the 5 and it got quieter, lol.

Thanks for preserving all this for us. Be forewarned though, if you take care of your truck, and it doesn’t turn to red dust, before you get all the good out of the truck Allison will probably have dropped support of that transmission. It’s happened before more than once. Tell that young fellow to mix some meat in with his ramen for more stick to the ribs. Take care and enjoy.

Haha!! My kids can't gain weight and I can't seem to lose it. Life's funny like that! I'm hoping I won't need too much support for the transmission. I don't haul heavy loads too often, so I'm really hoping I've got the truck completely over built for my needs which I'm also hoping means it lasts longer. I do take care of it and I'm hopeful it returns the favor.

Now the question is would you do it again or build the one that was in it?
@TheRoostersGarage2 жыл бұрын
Ooh great question! I’d do it again. I love how this locks the torque converter at 15mph, delivers the power to the ground like a manual, and pulls like a champ. Granted I haven’t driven one with a built 68, but I’ve heard how some of them didn’t last too long and after spending that kind of money I don’t want this to be a repeat job. I never could find the official rebuild duration on a built 68 but what I heard on forums looked like 100,000 or less. Heck, now I can take my truck to a heavy equipment mechanic for any tranny issues, lol!

Great video, now you've got a real towing vechile. On the transfer case do you think the stock one will hold up mine I had to fix a small crack from the tourqe that my new 68RFE that I replaced around 210,000mi on the original one. Mine is a 2007.5 I deleted everything when it hit 26,000mi and run a Smarty JR Tuner with the Middle Eastern Software, I've left it in the tow mode with all the settings set to the basic Tune. I've always said if Dodge, Cummins and Allison would just get together and just make the Heavy Duty with this set up then you would really have something. Hat's off to you, you did a great job even with some of the set backs that you encountered when doing the install. You did say you were in TN? right. Were about are you located at, I live N of Nashville up in the Whitehouse area off of 31W. If your close by I sure would like to be able to stop by and check it out if you wouldn't mind. Well anyway great job and great video.

Thank you so much! I do think the stock transfer case will hold up. I’ve heard horror stories of the computer putting it into 4lo on the interstate so that may get some attention next. The first few years for the 6.7 seem to be the black sheep of the family. Everything is just weird and it was a transition so I think Dodge was scrambling to meet regulations and threw some parts together without as much testing as usual. I live in the Watertown area. Which 68 builder did you go with? I looked at several before going with the Allison.
