I love that you are getting a glimpse into “diy” 1960’s style. We didn’t call it diy back then it was just “working on the house” lol. Also we painted our paneling and it comes out really good with the proper prep. Wash and go back over with a wet cloth to remove soap residue. Use a good primer like Kilz. Choose a satin or matte finish paint. If you take your time and pay attention to the prep it comes out beautiful. Great house, great ideas!

Congratulations on your new home ! In the basement bathroom I’d suggest possibly swapping the toilet and shower if you gave the clearance. The area around the toilet seems fairly large and you could have a bigger shower. Good luck with your Reno’s and all your painting!

Love the older features (built in cabinets,..) and the good hardwood floors! I grew up for 25 yrs in a old 1949 home - and now my hubby & I have a 1989 modular home which had carpet in the bathroom (🤢) which in May was finally removed when we had the master suite remodeled (now its LVP flooring and modern clean white stuff!). We just celebrated our 1st year here on our place (two & two modular home, two car garage, two car garage, sun porch & front porch on 1/2 acre of land! It our "forever home" -

I haven’t seen a one piece kitchen sink/drain board since I was little, in my grandparent’s house. How cool! I have repainted/epoxied a bath tub before. I bought a kit from Lowe’s and it turned out really nice. It’s a good way to improve the tub until you’re ready to replace it, or have it professionally reglazed. I have painted paneling several times. Make sure you use a good primer first. But, it looks brand new when it’s all done. Especially when you compare it to how it looked before. I wouldn’t pull up the carpeting until after you get the living room painted. I jumped the gun and then had to lay plastic everywhere to protect the floors. The place will be so cute when you guys make it your own.

Very excited for your new home. It has so much potential and it's great seeing you dream up the house but staying realistic about it. If you can make the basement bedroom nicer over all maybe you can move down there once the kids are older. That second living room is actually my favourite room so far. Opening up to the garden with all the windows. Enjoy your new home, you'll feel better once it's painted and filled with your furniture and lovely Bucky.

Our old house had brown paneling like that in our basement and my mom painted them white. Painting made a huge difference in lightning up the basement.

Congratulations! Looks like a great house. Good solid bones. Looks like the original home was well loved and well preserved for your family to come make it your own. Definitely good move on ripping out the carpets. The cabinets look like what was the style back in the 60’s. My dads house in CA was built in the 1920’s but was remolded before he bought it in the 70’s. What’s worse than light wood paneling from the 60’s? Dark wood paneling front the 70’s, popcorn ceilings and acoustic ceiling tiles! 😮😢😂 the smaller higher windows were made that way to add. More privacy and add a space for your bed to go. They are probably facing that way to minimize heating/cooling costs.

12 months later...I'm a Johnny Come Lately but I looked at a 1963 very original tri level today and it's so odd that KZbin is suggesting your videos without me searching and you didn't title anything "60's tri level." Your house is so similar. The yellow bath project is exactly what I needed. I'm wondering if the floors are wood under the kitchen tile. Paint your wall paneling. If you are still military, it's important to not spend more than the assessed value of the home since you might suddenly need to move and sell it. Taking out chimneys require patching the roof. You have a great, roomy first home. Maybe that dining room can be a playroom for now.

We have a 100 year old house. The previous owners put a drywall ceiling in the finished basement. Looks great - NIGHTMARE when we've had to do plumbing/electrical repairs, because all the lines are covered up. I would much prefer the tile ceiling where we could take pieces out instead of cutting holes in the drywall that we then have to repair, repaint, etc. Another option that would be easy is an open ceiling, paint all the exposed pipes/ducts/everything. But man, I would not put a drywall ceiling in the basement in an old house ever again.
