I have repaired these booms for 30 years. They mostly crack from sweeping the boom, which causes the box beam to twist and crack from the inside out. We did these repairs in the field, with stick welding, low hydrogen rod made by ArcTec in Alberta. This rod specially designed and patented, with high elongation properties.

I’m 63. Raised in BIG Texas ranch/farming. Shops for repair and fabrication. I have no memory of who taught me to weld. I know I own over 10 welders today. I AM NOT A PRO. But I can say that whoever “fixed” this machine before should be ashamed. Further the frequency of boom cracks points towards inherent design/build flaws. In the end?? You Sir are a badass and know what it takes to do a job properly. My Texas hat is off to you! Su Amigo Siempre.

Good job dude. I did this sorta work 40 yrs ago. My boss woulda had me remove the boom to weld the underside as he never rated overhead welding, although all ships at that time had maybe a few miles of overhead in them. MIG had just begun so we were only stick welders. 10 out of 10 for that job there.

Really good work brother! As a heavy diesel mech. Its good to see boom damage cracks fixed right and strengthened. 99× out of 100 its a real crusty half-assed job that doesn't solve squat. And breaks again worse. causes bends or twists in the boom and that's game over, replacement boom usually. Soom guys will even try to do heavy work even after the boom's gaping open, lift concrete with breakers like a giant crowbar, not worth the cost of a new boom/stick.

Get yourself a welder its fun it takes a bit of time but its not hard obviously your not going to be welding big shit like hes doing but building regular things. When i first started i got a Lincoln electric 100 flux core it can weld half inch at 20% duty cycle useing .35 wire i only use .30 wire i like it best and iv upgraded the welder so i can use gas now too see i went with the Lincoln 100 because it hooks into a 125 outlet and at the time i paid 600 it was on sale for 40% off. But now im looking to get the Lincoln 140 mig pak pro because it has the aluminum gun hook up and i think it might have a tig hook up too. Anything bigger then that will need a 220 outlet of power. But i tell you the 100's are great welders iv had mine for 8 years now

Why do the new plates have that V shape as opposed to being just roughly rectangular? Is it to increase the perimeter and amount of welded area, or does it align with some internal reinforcing? Nice job, thanks for sharing, keep them coming!
@JuhaErkkila
@JuhaErkkila 4 жыл бұрын
V shape or more like ellipse shape in the reinforcement plate spreads the tension into wider area in the old boom... And all booms are also flexible structures so if you put too big stiffness difference into the boom sides by putting a straight plate you will create internal stress accumulation place where the the flexing will tear the stiff part away. So it is not due to welding... Its due to internal stress inside the stucture

Outstanding repair! I would say it is now even stronger than before it was damaged.

Another tidy job. Thanks. I'd never thought about the need to snip back flux cored wire before use. I suppose it's the same as keeping you rods dry.

I’ve never seen heavy welding before , but it was fascinating and very professional. Nice to see a young man in heavy engineering too . I agree on the music, not necessary rather hear your experienced comments!
