Def one of their more commercial recordings, I second In Memory of Elizabeth Reed from Live at the Filmore East, beautiful instrumental. Many consider this to be one of the greatest guitar duos, line up is twin lead guitarists, two drummers, bass and Greg Allman on keys and vocals one of the best voices ever, his brother Duane Allman was considered one of the best guitarists and one of the first to bring slide guitar into rock, they have gone through many changes through the years and only ended with the death of greg just a few years ago, Duane died in 71 I think, their last line up had Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks two of the best guitarists of this generation, amazing band with equally amazing history.

6:38 The Allman Brothers were heavily influenced by jazz music. They used to listen to a lot of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In fact they are considered by many to be one of the first jazz rock or jazz fusion bands. They and the Grateful Dead are considered to be the founding fathers of the jam band scene...
@richkurl2 жыл бұрын
2 drummers, by the way - Butch Trucks & Jai Johanny Johanson. The first 4 albums were their greatest works IMHO - The Allman Brothers Band 1969, Idlewild South 1970 (combined later for the album Beginnings), At Fillmore East 1971, and Eat a Peach 1972. This was the very first band I truly fell in love with. Do some research on Duane Allman, one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, teamed with the also great Dickey Betts. Duane died in a motorcycle accident October 1971 at only 24, but his body of work is simply breathtaking. His brother Gregg with that blue-eyed-soul voice was the singer and keyboardist. One of the finest instrumental jams of all time is In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, composed by Dickey, and recorded twice - the studio version on Idlewild South, and the extended live version on At Fillmore East. The studio version is excellent, the live version will blow your mind.

You're right, Nick, that "Midnight Rider" is a nice introduction. And you're right, too, that it would be nice to hear them stretch out in longer forms. Well (lucky for you!), you'll have that opportunity if you listen to tracks from their albums Live at the Fillmore East and Eat a Peach. Their first two albums, both recorded in a studio, are kind of restricted, but in concert (and in their live albums) the original group of Duane Allman (guitar), Greg Allman (vocals and keyboards), Dicky Betts (guitar), Berry Oakley (bass), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johnny Johansen aka Jaimo (drums and percussion) were one of the great jam bands of all time. Sadly, only two of the four original members are still with us. Stick to the original group. The band went on for decades, but their best work was created early on before Duane and Berry died in motorcycle crashes about a year apart. And, spend some time looking into Duane Allman's session work with Boz Scaggs (see John Chu's comment on "Lowdown"), Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter, and, of course, Derek and the Dominoes (i.e., Eric Clapton and his band from the early '70s).

Ah - Eat a Peach. I took a little 'trip' with the band with Mountain Jam. It was like watching them in a small bar, going outside with them on a break up into the woods behind the bar and then they ran me all over. Just when I felt completely lost we 'popped out' back at the bar where they went back in and finished the set. When the song ended I was sitting there at home wondering what had I just witnessed . . . . I was lucky to see them in South Florida back in the 80's.

The Allman Brothers did fuse blues/jazz/country. Greg singer/keyboards and Dwane Allman guitar are the “brothers”. Richard Betts is also a member and a guitarist/song writer. Dwane was the force that set the pace, he played guitar and used the bottleneck slide. “Live At the Fillmore” is their iconic album. Arguably the best live album in rock history.

This was the first incarnation of the band. Their breakthrough record was 1971's double album Live at Fillmore East. The lead singer was organist Gregg Allman, who was married to Cher for a while. There were 2 drummers and 2 guitarists. Check out Duane Allman's slide playing on "Statesboro Blues". Clapton saw him play and invited him to play on the Layla album. His playing had a more bluesy direction than the other guitarist, Dickie Betts - and after Duane died in a motorcycle accident, you heard Betts singing "Ramblin' Man" which was more in a country vein. A later version of the band had Derek Trucks, a nephew of the drummer, on slide guitar, and Warren Haynes, who has the band Gov't Mule, on guitar and vocals. I hope you get to that lineup. A good introduction to Derek Truck's slide playing would be the live video of "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" on their "Live At The Beacon Theatre - 2003 ". Probably the best known Allman Brothers song is "Whippin' Post", which would be too long for many radio stations. Probably inspired by how The Cream used to lengthen their songs live, many of their songs were vehicles for soloing, and could last for 20 min. If you remember Jimmy Herring, he used to play with them occasionally, having played in a band with Derek Trucks before. I never requested them because Nick said he didn't like blues. B.B.King said that Derek Trucks was the best slide guitarist he had ever seen.

They were such a great live band. My own favorite song of theirs is probably "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." There are a lot of great versions out there, actually, but you can't go wrong with the one off their classic live album "At Fillmore East." Having said that, it's a 13 minute instrumental and not close to the longest song on the album ("You Don't Love Me" and "Whipping Post" clock in at 19 and 23 minutes, respectively). The members all really clicked with each other musically and they could go on really extended live jams. They have a few short songs that are nice, but that's not really their calling card.

I spent a great Halloween evening at Sweetwater in Marin County California back in '87. Duane had died years before, and the Allmans continued to tour and record as the Allman Brothers Band, and Gregg had married Cher (yes, that Cher). Anyway...it was a Halloween Costume Party at Sweetwater, which was a small venue, maybe 150 seats, and Gregg played solo with a drummer, bassist and guitarist, but not his regular band, Cher was there, 2 tables away from me and my wife, and at the end of the evening they had a costume contest, which my wife and I won, we got on stage and Gregg and Cher gave us a trophy and hugged us to the cheers of the crowd. I never got to see the Allmans while Duane was alive, but saw the later version live, Dickie Betts had taken the role of lead guitarist, and admirably but they never enjoyed the same fame. Dickie is playing lead on Ramblin Man. Anyway, its beginning to almost sound like its impossible for me to have met all these artists personally, but I swear, its all true! Different times!

It's amazing to think that all the classic Allman Brothers were recorded when Duane and Gregg were in their early twenties. Duane died at age 24 and bassist Berry Oakley died a year later also at age 24. Live at the Filmore was recorded when Gregg (keys and lead vocals) was 22!

I've been tooting my horn repeatedly to get you to hear a truly original band that'll have the impact for you on par with your introductory experience to Steely Dan and The Doors. I'm not going to write another treatise (if you saw it) about this brilliant band, let's just say I know what would turn you on in a big way! For a single song, I'd recommend In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. For Patreon, At Fillmore East is absolutely unmissable. I'm putting my megaphone down, so the ball's in your court. Lex I hope your health continues to improve. You know legions of fans are rooting for you but of course!

"Jessica" is a great instrumental that kinda blends progressive rock and Southern rock. About 7 minutes of fun.

A good place to start. They are a complex band. Southern rock with jazz and Blues influences. SO many great songs. It's a deep deep dive.

This song may be the first I heard of the Allman Brothers. I became a fan instantly. This song got a lot of air play. It was dubbed as "Southern Rock" which I had no idea what that was at the time. The lead singer, Gregg Allman has such a wonderful voice that certainly translates well for straight ahead blues or blues/rock genre's. His brother, Duane, was quite possibly the best slide guitarist of his time. Duane plays dual lead with Eric Clapton on the "Layla" album. My favorite album by them is "Live at the Fillmore East". The track "Whipping Post" is an absolute classic.
