my dad used to play this song and I loved it. he and I fell out of touch for almost twenty five years. Recently we have started tentatively talking again(mostly about guitars and cars)... Now my wife's name is Melissa and although I never call her that, it has become important to me to learn this song. Thanks for teaching it to me.

I’m a self taught guitarist. Been playing for 35 years. I can read guitar cords but I’m easily frustrated and annoyed most of the time with certain songs. Someone else could have showed me this a hundred times and I wouldn’t have got it. The apps on this phone are awesome. If I had this thing 35 years ago, I would be way more advanced. My point being, that for some reason, you just taught me one of my top 5 favorite songs. I picked right up and within 15 minutes, I have it down? I don’t know what you just did but you did it!!🤠 kick ass!! Thx bro!

Thanks for all the videos, Marty. Even though this one is 5 years old, they're pretty timeless because these songs are enduring and there's always going to be someone new wanting to learn how to play them. Yesterday I was watching J. Browne play The Pretender and came across a live version of Gregg Allman and J. Browne playing Sweet Melissa. I went down the KZbin “wormhole” and ended up watching your Jimi Hendrix blues video with a 12 string. Loved the video and subscribed to your channel. Today I decided to see if I could find a tutorial for Sweet Melissa and ended up right back on your channel. This was a great tutorial! Long story longer, I’m glad that I subscribed here and look forward to going through your playlist. Thanks for what you’re doing!

Andres, the Allmann Brothers came from Georgia, US and can take large credit for inventing the southern rock genre. The southeastern portion of the US (the old Confederacy), at that time in the late 60s/early 70s, produced a number of bands (e.g. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels) with a unique sound. See also Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman and Poco.

Nice Marty. This was a favorite of mine in college as well but I was never really able to nail all the barre chords. Now I've got a guitar with a thinner neck that's set up properly with decent action so it's a lot easier, a lot more fun, and sounds a whole lot better. I can tackle songs now that I avoided in the past. Especially helpful are KZbin instructional videos like these. I don't have to bug everybody to keep showing me the same things over and over again. I just watch the videos as many times as I need and it makes a big difference -- for all concerned. Thanks man. Happy Holidays.

thank YOU Sir! Marty, man, I should have and would have learned this one 38 years ago when I got together with my own Sweet Melissa, but had the lyrics wrong and thought it was about flying all over screwing her over then coming home to her. Marty, I’ve been playing semi pro and teach occasionally. I don’t have the patience.. “(Which is it kid?! Baseball camp or guitar?!”) Ya know? Seriously, I appreciate how you play strumming patterns, cadence etc. then pick the notes individually for chord placement and confirmation. To sum it up. you’re a very good teacher and I’ve been playing this song wrong for 30 years ..So, Thanks El Guapo..Yep!.A dramatic 3 amigos ending. Keep on dude....
@catekatz58552 жыл бұрын
Awesome breakdown of Melissa! The only thing that didn’t sound right to me is when you go to the barred D chord during the bridge. (After the C#minor) I think it should be a barred A chord which then slides up to B? In any case, thank you so much!! 🙏☺️🎸🤘
@chrismnj Жыл бұрын
100%. You can just use the open A too. The beginning of this lesson is great but gets a little messy to be honest. You don’t need to play Bm and C#Minor barred either (again the mornin comes section). Look up Jen Tranni’s version. Between this lesson and hers, and a lot of practice I can finally play this song. I find Marty’s way of taking the C and B at the 9th and 8th frets easier, but the other way sounds closer to original.

Good tutorial as always, but I noticed a couple of differences from the official tab books I bought back in the 90s and I thought some people might be interested in trying these alternate chords: Most notably, The C bar chord on the 8th fret that you reference was an open Cmaj7 in the book. It's a little more difficult to get to from the A bar on the 5th fret, but it does sound nicer. The other major difference was in the bridge when you go from C#m to D. In the book, it's C#m to A.

Song is in E major. Most of the lead parts are based on the E major pentatonic with 2 added notes on the b and high e strings. Use these notes and you should be able to play along in tune. Mix it up...have fun with it. string frets Low E: 12 A 9, 11 D 9, 11 G 9, 11, 13 B 9, 10, 12, 14 High E 9, 10, 12, 14, 16 The haunting lick after Greg sings the lyric "sweet Melissa" is -------------------------------14 bend up -------------------12 ------------------- ------------------- ------------------- ------------------- Open Cmaj7 and not C barre at 8th fret. Other than that...great lesson.
