Alloy Rim Straightening- Wheel Repair at St. Marys Tire

Alloy Rim Straightening- Wheel Repair This 2006 Mercedes E 350 , hit a pot hole and bent the front rim. It is an alloy rim so to straighten the wheel i took it to St.Marys Tire. There at St. Marys Tire they have a rim straightening machine . You need to put the rim on the wheel straightening machine and first check the rim to know where all the wheel is bent. Then the rim needs to be heated up to help bending the rim back in shape. After wheel is heated , there is a arm that you can put different shoes on to fit different rims to straighten. The wheel straightening process is like a big press to push the wheel back straight. To make the wheel straight you must not only make it round but also the side run out . It is amazing that Alloy wheels or rims can be safely straightened .

We used to have a wheel refinishing and straightening business a couple doors down from the shop. They did a hell of a nice job too. Then LKQ decided they wanted to do wheels and they sold out to them...

LKQ got their hands in all the independent auto parts repair business...I worked for them as a delivery driver...the job was cool until they started getting stingy with the pay. they went from paying you hourly to wanting you to sell auto body products on your runs...and get paid by commission...so if you didn't sell you don't get paid!

Dont assume all repair was done with a machine like this. I seen some of these machine price at $10-20k. I seen some videos where some people just heat it and hit it with a hammer. I'm in the market for a tool but I only want to spend couple hundred.

It's pretty cool to see the guys straighten and re roll a rim...Most time the rim will crack from a pot hole impact..I guess they can weld them up too.

ZIGgassedUP surprising, most he gets are not cracked , and he said he has welded a few minor cracks , but has had good luck with them not breaking , I always look thinking there may be a crack , but he said oem ones seem to take it better than after market ones

Slammed into a pot hole and have a very slight bend on the inside of the rim. Had new tires put on and the bent rim was placed on the passenger side. (FWD car) at highway speed I now feel a constant vibration in my passenger seat. Is the bent rim the culprit? I was going to jack the car up on the rear and do the free spin to see if I can notice any variation. Thank you for any advice. wtbm123, Straightened that rim right out, cool, did not even know the service was available. If one's rim is 1/4 of a vintage matched set, I'm sure it more then pays to get it fixed. Did the S10 test driver bend that rim?

It can be a tough decision though. Nowadays you can get a pretty decent rim on sale for $200 (Low end BBS). So let’s say you have 4 slightly bent rims giving you a perceptible shimmy problem what do you do? Get all 4 fixed for $600 when all is said and done or pay $800 for a new set of rims.

Some used rims go for less than $200 , but some are costly, $300-$400 and up , so a lot depends on the rim and if any used are available

Fair argument. However I would keep in mind that oem wheels are going to be of much higher quality than your average aftermarket wheels which are going to bend and crack even more easily. Sure you can get some aftermarket’s that’s may be oem quality but you’re probably going to need to spend a few thousand. Not saying not to get aftermarket’s. Just need to be aware that generally speaking you are compromising quality for price.

Interesting! Question: Once the rim is back in spec after this proceedure, will the original tyre "correct" itself eventually (ie:become more round?). Reason is, I bought 4 new tyres and the installer told me that 2 of my rims were buckled badly. I drove the car on the new tyres for about a month before having the rim correction done. The car feels WAY better, but still a little shake in the ride. Thanks!

You are overtempering (softening) the aluminum that results in a wheel that will not be as strong. It will not take impacts. It will bend more easily next time you hit something. This coming from a metallugist/welding professional.
