Just for you guy that made the comment the rim does not have the same integrity before bent. Little education on aluminium. well everyone know why mag wheels got their name. Mag wheels were made from magnesium alloy. Today more known as alloy wheels. Aluminium alloys wheels today are made from 97% 601 aluminium, less than 1% magnesium/ titanium on higher price rims with a T6 hardness . That said, the guy heating the rim is ok .As long as the guys does not go over 400 degrees. When building custom wheels/ alloy rims they go through and extensive heat process that takes much longer that casting and machining the wheel.. The final process is powder coating witch takes the rim back up to 400 degrees to melt the coating. . This is where the rim straightening guy ( the one, few of you guys are hard on and say buy a new rim. )is doing the correct procedure. Now a welded crack can be weaker if not right alloy filler rode and 100% weld. it actually can be harder than the rest of rim. Making it less malleable. Steel rim? Yes replace it . My welding fee would cost you twice as much . Oh yeh, good video rim guy. thanks for you time t post it. like the machine.
@thearcher17404 жыл бұрын
1) The rim repair guy does not know the right filler rod to use as he has no idea what the rim's original alloy mix is 2) Vast majority of rims are NOT powdercoated (they are painted with wet paint). When (and if) powdercoating is done, it can be done using a longer bake process where temps do not exceed 200 degrees 3) Welding takes the temperatures WELL past 400 degrees. 4) Heating and pushing out rim bends, does nothing for preexisting microfractures. And will create MORE microfractures. 5) Heating a rim in a localized area causes spots of unequal strength which is what causes issues. Especially in a driving situation where a rotating rim is subject to a lot of flexing

But they told me they couldn’t fix the other one because the dent was next to the spokes and if they heat it up with fire and push it up then it’ll break right next to the spokes. They told me that they try fixing low profile rims with a lot spokes and it always breaks next to the spokes of the rims because something will give them it’ll break

Alloy wheels cannot be repaired, as they are designed to require differential cooling in the heat treatment process, and any serious deformity or heat shock (like a torch) will irreparably damage the internal structure.
@saijinL46 жыл бұрын
@@merlinious01 are you some sort of engineer? The heating isnt that hot. This has been done for many yrs and havent heard much about wheels cracking or breaking. If you think that a little bit of heat weakens or ruins the integrity of the wheel then all those millions of wheels that have been powdercoated must be no good...
@merlinious016 жыл бұрын
@@saijinL4 I can't say I'm familiar with the temperature used during powder coating, so I have no informed opinion for your comment on it. However, even if you bent the rim back to its original shape cold, it still has damaged the internal structure of the wheel. Differential cooling creates a complex balance of internal tension throughout the structure of the wheel rim. This gives it its stiffness without adding weight. However, these forces must stay in balance and be uniform throughout the rim to be effective and safe. If the rim is heated sufficiently, the structure is effectively erased in the location where the heating took place. If the rim is bent, the forces go out of balance along the bend, damaging its structural integrity. This creates a weak point.
@saijinL46 жыл бұрын
@@merlinious01 doesnt matter if you are correct or i am it doesnt change the fact this has been done for many years without a problem. Im guessing your not in the wheel industry or any industry related to wheels to understand what can or cannot be done. Speak from experience not from theory, thats my tip. :)
@CommonSensePeople5 жыл бұрын
@@saijinL4 Merlin is right....you have absolutely no understanding of metallurgy and are putting people at risk. You are destroying the grain structure of the metal by both repeated heating and cooling as well as repeated physical stress causing work hardening. I would suspect that the reason you think there is no problem with what you are doing is two fold. 1. You choose to ignore the people who bring their wheels back after they crack due to your "repair" as everyone in your business refuses to guaranty the "repairs" that you perform. 2. A lot of people probably have the wheel crack catastrophically where you weaken it and end up replacing it as they should have done to begin with. It wouldn't surprise me if a few of them end up dead when their wheel explodes at 90mph.

where can i purchase the hydraulic bottle jacks individually or is it part of the machine?
@thomasnoon99743 ай бұрын
I assume its a purpose made wheel truing machine and experienced operator. Given aluminium castings are more brittle than steel, I wonder why after pre-heating that the hydraulic jack isnt left in place until it has cooled enough to enable the casting to freeze in place without stress? Instead of heating and pressing further than required, then releasing the pressure allowing it to drop down quite a bit. Up and down excessively is not good for brittle materials like aluminium - it causes stress.

The art and science its just an excuse for LACK of knowledge. As a forging expert, I would like to share some metallurgy facts with the uninformed. 1st) every manufacturer is probably using an exclusive of custom formulated alloy. Small addition of various elements call micro alloying give alloys different properties when cooled at various cooling rates. 2nd) when metals are forged, the grain structure of the resulting forging is altered leading to enhansed physical properties. Heating a forging will destroy the forged grain structure. 3rd) cold working metals deformed the crystalline structure of the metal and changes the physical properties locally. By understanding these principals, one can understand that straightening an alloy wheel, especially a forged alloy wheel will alter its physical properties. As a result, the wheel may be weaker and or more brittle and therefore be more susceptible to future failure.

if the heat is sufficient to make the metal malleable but not enough to make it brittle then this type of repair is not an issue. To get heat damage you would ahve to heat the alloy well over 1000 celcius to make it brittle. To do that the whole wheel has to be hot as the rest of the wheel acts as a heatsink. if the metal is not hot enough it will create microfractures. Once you have done this procedure a few time you can feel with the tools when the metal has the right heat. Done properly for a medium term repair it is fine.
@konjiki240sx4 жыл бұрын
I do alot of aluminum fabrication. That torch doesn't put out enough heat to damage the wheel(at least it would be very difficult to pull it off). Aluminums thermal conductivity is very high so the mass present in a wheel will be working against the torch sucking heat away from the heat effect zone. (this is why heatsinks are often made out of aluminum). Robert Wolf hit the nail on the head.

Holy shit so many internet engineers
@merlinious016 жыл бұрын
I understand your sentiment, but amongst these internet engineers are a few actual engineers. Alloy wheels, once deformed (especially to this extent) cannot be restored to original condition. Whilst you might be able to bend it back into shape, and it might seem to work fine, it is substantially weakened. This is because alloy wheels gain much of their strength through differential cooling in the heat treatment process. There are countless vectors of tension and compression in balance with eachother throughout the crystalline structure in the wheel. If you reheat, or even bend, the wheel then those become unbalanced. Imagine two springs, one pushing while one is pulling with equal force. They are in balance, and are quite rigid. If you distort one of those springs, the system becomes unbalanced and susceptible to catastrophic failure. Once an alloy wheel is bent, it is recycling. It is not safe to reuse. Its metallurgical properties have been skewed. I cannot speak to steel wheels, as they are more forgiving in repair.
@MP_pov4 жыл бұрын
For normal real life car use driving within speed limits, this will be just fine with balancing after tyre is fitted. Nobody will be able to tell the difference. You're far more likely to have a tyre failure than a wheel failure. But I wouldn't go charging 150mph on the autobahn... How do you fix a wheel that's buckled at the hub as opposed to the rim? Is there a different machine?

Straightening is one thing structural integrity is another these wheels have an aluminium alloy material which is crystalline in its make up in structure having done small welding repairs on wheels of this type you find the cracks extend way ahead of the visual crack quite a bit so after a repair of the type in this video only a non destructive test i.e ex ray of the damaged area would satisfy me after re true of the rim I dear say the insurance company would want nothing to do with it, also the unknown stresses and punishment this will take in operation let alone speeds reached and side loads make using this with children and other loved ones on board nothing more than Russian roulette, the repairer better have a good insurance company that protects his business and home because he will loose the lot and his liberty in the event of a fatality or serious injury , even a mediocre solicitor would win that case in this day and age. Repairing mechanical items are ok but depending on their use and application, my comments in no way attempt to question the repairers skill or ability but only his wisdom in this claim culture and society we live in today and the safety angle.
