Grew up with swiss steak. Mom’s version had a lot of onions and instead of tomato pepper carrot, she used some bottled chili sauce (the tangy sweet kind by Heinz) with some cream of tomato, not diluted. We also had mushrooms. Later on when I moved out and beef was out of budget for me I would make it with pork chops. Also very yummy.
@lisachapman649211 сағат бұрын
Cream of tomato I'm going to have to look for that.

I would ❤️ a vintage series. My grandmothers and my mother are all gone now and it’s been at least 20 years since I had my mother’s cooking, but this is the type of food I grew up with and we definitely ate it with rice. It fills part of the loneliness of being alone at Christmas to see such a nostalgic food being prepared. Really hope you continue.

Growing up, my mom made Swiss steak. I think she used cube steak or another cheap cut of steak. She added in her homemade chilli sauce and would cook it in her large electric fry pan. It would simmer for hours and you could cut the steak with a fork. It was delicious. Sadly, all her hand written recipes were lost after she passed away.

Nicole you were generous with your meat thickness. Back in the late 50's when I was a kid I remember them being thin. My Mama beat them out bigger. Beef was expensive. Ours was served over rice. Thanks for this recipe. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025. We also had the same recipe using pork. That was delicious also.

I would devour that, my wife on the other hand would be picking everything out of it !!! She is hard to cook for ! Our Mother was always making quick classic recipes as growing up we were on a limited income because our Dad was in the Air Force and back in the 70's-80's Military pay was minimal back then. But she made sure us Boys knew how to cook before we both went out and served our country. Cooking to me is fun.

I have some old cook books from the early 1900's, oddly I've never made anything from them, I just collected the Books because I was a Printer for 50 yrs. and when I'm in an Antique Shop, I'll buy old books and magazines, I have a really nice collection of Saturday Evening Post's and Look Magazine, I should thumb through them for Recipes and try some. I have had Swiss Steak long ago cooked by my Dad's Mom, they were from the St. Louis area. My Mom's family were from rural Canada so their Recipes were pretty unique too, mostly based on Scottish Recipes my Great Grandparents were from Scotland...I couldn't understand a word they said to me as a kid, I would look to Mom to translate for me. 😆
