With the launch of Jay Z's new streaming service 'Tidal' fresh on everyone's tongue's (pause), and with the likes of music's top earners Beyonce, Rihanna, Kanye West and Madonna to name a few working together to change the tide, the service is expected to cause a ripple in the industry. The debaters sat down to discuss what this actually means for the future of music streaming.
Does this new streaming service actually benefit the consumer as well as the provider?
Is it worth the $19.99 a month? Is that too much money to stream and not exclusively own?
Is Tidal the future of music streaming?

Agreed and he's also a decent artist if you catch some of his freestyles.

Here's the fundamental problem with Tidal. In order for it to work, artists will need to upload content that is exclusive to Tidal. Currently they do not; they upload to spotify, soundcloud and youtube plus more. Reason being, they have fans in many different places online, and it would be criminal for any artist to upload all content exclusively to Tidal and marginalize their fan base based on their economic situation & loyalty. I don't think it will take significant market share from spotify and others if they can't get the artists, and a sensible artist would not split up their fan base for a slight increase in profit margin let alone test their fan base loyalty. Jay Z himself will stand to lose out if he post content to tidal exclusively and no where else

I think that as part of the deal of artists getting a higher royalty rate they we be required to offer some exclusive content, or they may reward artists for putting their material on the site say a week earlier, which will secure a reasonable amount traffic for a specific piece of content, before it is widely available.

Jovan Sterling-Noel no. because if all of the biggest artists go to tidal then spotify is fucked. simple.

BritHopTV tooreal foryou If that's the case then fair do's, it could be a sweet deal for the artists however on Jay Z's end, if he wants more consumers signing up he'll want a longer lead time between content uploaded exclusively and being available elsewhere. These top artists would already be getting reasonable amount of traffic and I guess for them it's the royalties that would sway to Tidal but it also means they need to create a fan base on Tidal. That's just more work which begs the question, is the slight increase in profit margin worth the hassle?

The main benefit for the consumer is the tidal HiFi subscription the audio content that you stream is much more higher quality than other streamers like Spotify rdio etc. But the average music listener doesn't know much about audio file types, frequency response, sample rate and bit depth etc. And can't hear the difference. I'm sure that the majority of rihannas fans will not be jumping to get tidal HiFi. The intention of this new platform is awesome for audiophiles, artists and for the industry. But I'm not sure if its going to take off

Young Kye, you shall go far. You have seen beyond the trickery of the Sith. DDark, if you trust in Jay-Z your career shall be left in your name. [ Google : "It’s a Trap! TIDAL and the Common Fallacy of Music Royalties" and see if I lie. ]

For me personally, I rather spend my money on the artists I like directly. That means going to local music stores, buying CDs and Vinyl and attending concerts when I can. That's how you support the music. Streaming isn't bad, but I prefer to sit with my music and I think streaming generally encourages fast cash instead of longevity and appreciation for art.

This is just about leverage for artist. Taylor Swift pull her album off Spotify because of the low royalty rate. So she puts her new album up on Tidal exclusively for 3 months and get the bulk of the stream revenue. So then Spotify or Apple offer her money for that same exclusive. The industry tried this with KZbin by creating Vevo and it didn't really work out. Vevo is still not really profitable but they did get KZbin/Google to invest 50 million into it.

It will get real when all the artists involved decide to take their music off of spotify and only allow it to be streamed on tidal. Then we'll see if ppl care
