Thank you all for listening to the legendary tale of Onyxia, the Obsidian dragon. In case you are wondering, I purposely avoided using my character's name throughout the story, for I realized while writing that this epic saga was not about me, but rather the incredible NPC that my DM and I helped to bring to life. It is my hope that my beautiful daughter is remembered in songs and spoken of in legends, for as much as many might love this saga...all of this was merely her origin story. Her legend (and the legends of the rest of my children) has yet to be written, and while I imagine I will one day attempt to write several more stories describing Onyxia's exploits, for now I am content that everyone had the opportunity to hear of her legend. And so, with that being said, if ever you feel that the 'beast' inside of you is winning, or if you simply find yourself in need of an inspiring and heroic NPC, remember that there was once a dragon who was forced to face her wicked nature...and through great adversity and many terrible trials....she was finally able to conquer her demons and make her scales shine!

I can imagine a campaign that is several lifetimes after the death of the father and a group of adventures were called upon by a dragon council. Different types of dragons sit upon carved thrones in dragon speech that the black Dragonborn can see each chair is a respected placement "Silver, Gold, and so on" and there on the council is an empty carved seat that says "obsidian" and the council gives a letter written in dragon speech to the one named Onyxia. The party would accept and go to cities that are suggested to find other dragons with the names of the younger siblings about the whereabouts of Onyxia. The black Dragonborn slowly falling further into an evil alignment because of the alienation of their companions and the hatred of townspeople only for each of the brass dragons to give him something and say in dragon speech "give this to my dear older sister Onyxia and ask her about her childhood memories". The black Dragonborn would refuse to give the items entrusted to him to his companions by saying that he was entrusted with this quest, not them. Upon entering a fortress a large dragon is flying towards them and the party is freaking out because of the sight of a mature black dragon and starts telling the other warriors in the fortress to prep for battle. Only for those in the fortress to take an insult and refuse to attack their own and that's when a beautiful, brilliant obsidian dragon to land in the courtyard and look upon the travelers. The black Dragonborn looks upon her in awe and slowly approaches her knowing his scales are far duller than hers and present her the sealed letter from the dragon council.

@DEEPFOXJUDE While both may be semi-precious to some extent, obsidian is a substance formed in the earth, like the other stones listed, even if its usually referred to as a type of glass. Ivory, meanwhile, is a material made from the teeth and tusks of animals, often elephants. Ivory Dragon doesn't really fit the theme of the other "risen" chromatic dragons, seeing as they're all earthly minerals.

hello. I feel almost compelled to respond. The story of Onyxia the Dragon is a touching one, as well as one with hope for the future. In many ways it mirrors a campaign I participated in many many years ago (nearly 45 years ago to be exact). In that campaign I played a Grey Elf Ranger-Fighter-Mage (D&D 3rd edition) that at one point saved the daughter of a Drow from a horrible death. But, in the moment of decision I could just not stand there in the market square of that large city and see a child barely a decade old, chained, beaten, tortured, and burned at the stake. I fought off the local militia and freed her and took her as my own daughter. Doing my best to raise her to become a person that was, if not 'good', at least not 'evil'. One that would be Just and shelter the weak and helpless. Although she was a 'handful' as a child, by the end of her first Century of life, and my third Century, she had become a truly awesome warrior, and one that valued the innocence of children and would do anything in her power to protect and save them. My proudest moment was when I stood beside her in the temple to her God, acting as her Shield Companion and arming her with armor and weapons in the eyes of her God, Her temple's priests, and those very same citizens (or their grandchildren) that I had fought to save her from. Her ebony skin perfectly framed by the silver washed Adamantium chain armor that I had commissioned for her for her promotion to Paladin. Every riveted ring of her mail was inscribed with the name of her God. And each piece of the partial plate armor that I strapped upon her had her God's holy symbol prominently displayed. But what brought her to my lonely Ranger's Keep in the deep forests of Arden, was when she noted that every piece of that plate armor had my own God's holy symbol etched upon it's back face, closest to her body. When asked why I had done this... why I had undermined her Gods' protection, I remembered the scared, shivering, starved, and nearly beaten to death little girl I had saved nearly a hundred years before. My answer was simple. "Because I love you, my Daughter. I love you so much, that I would risk the wrath of my own God in asking his protection for you, and the wrath of your own God for presuming to interfere with His protection." I looked into her pale eyes and hugged her close before finishing: "And because it is a Father's Right, to do his best to protect the most precious thing in his world." To my knowledge, Amurgia ('Dusk' feminized in Romanian) was the first, and Only Drow Paladin of a Lawful Good Deity. And although I played that character from time to time over the course of several Real Life years, spanning centuries of game time, I never heard of another. But Amurgia proved to be an example to others, not normally known to serve the Light, and her example let to others following in her footsteps. Mostly the now-adults that she had personally saved from horrible fates or gruesome deaths, like I had done for her so long ago. When the DM finally closed the campaign and moved on to other things in Real Life, He took me to dinner and we spoke of many things before the night ended and he had to move nearly a thousand miles away. So far, that we have lost contact over the decades since. He remarked during that dinner that I had changed world he had created many times, but the greatest example was my Grey Elf R-F-M, Dalion... and his Daughter Amurgia. He asked where I had gotten the words to explain to her why her skin was so dark compared to Dalion's paleness. The words I had used were: 'Not flesh of my flesh, nor bone of my bone, yet still a miracle of my very own. Know that although you were not born from under my heart, you were born within it." This is a paraphrase of a simple poem that is mostly associated with adoptive parents. "Not flesh of my flesh, Nor bone of my bone, But nevertheless still my own. Never forget for a single minute, You weren't born under my heart But in it." I was forced to paraphrase due to being a Father, rather than a Mother to the adoptive child. But the meaning was the same. My friend revealed to me that night something I had never known before. He, had been adopted at the age of 2 years old. He had only found out when he went to get his Birth Certificate, that his 'parents' were not his biological ones. And his mother had said the exact same thing to him when he questioned her. Love is a strange thing. I can hurt one so deeply, yet it can conquer any foe. Long Live Onyxia!

D&D 3rd Edition was only released in 2000. I'm not sure how you could have been playing it almost 45 years ago. AD&D 1st Edition was released in 1977-79 which was nearly 45 years ago. I think you might have meant 1st Ed, not 3rd, but there is still the problem of not being able to be a Elven ranger fighter mage, at least not by the normal rules.

I was inspired to write some open ended snippets for Onyxia's continuing story. For decades Onyxia honed her skills as a paladin in service to Ragathiel. Her heroic deeds gained her as many companions as she saved on the battlefield. The tides of war grew still, yet she pressed on. Onyxia's work to cleanse the land of evil was never finished, she and her devoted would strike the demonic encroachments for meager coin and a few drops of blood. They would return here for a bit of revelry between battles. She laid over there on the platform, a regular fixture at the Dragon's Flagon. Of Onyxia's companions only one could truly be called a friend. He was the one that loosed her tongue and captured her heart. Their trysts took them beyond the city walls, but not beyond suspicious eyes. Rumor had spread that Onyxia found a silver dragon mate, and when word reached her I'm glad it wasn't in this tavern. She crashed through the barracks wall and confronted the captain of the guard to judge if he had betrayed her. Her inquest was dripping with an anger reserved for demons, causing even the stoutest hearts to falter. She relented and that day Onyxia and her mate departed. My father didn't live to see her return, but she is always welcome here. Dear Alleria, I've arrived at big sister's estate and finally met her family. She departed shortly afterwards, answering the call of Ragathiel. Brother Dendrak is most influential in the nearby city, he has used his vast wealth to build a beautiful manor. It is spacious even with eleven of us under the same roof. There is much work to do around the house and the caretaker has gone missing, I presume he quit as I dread to think a fearsome beast is encroaching on big sister's happy home. I've made it clear to Dendrak that I am not here to clean up after him and nine fifty year olds, I am only here to tutor our nieces and nephews. Big sister didn't mention they all took after her, not one silver among them. I am having great trouble with six of them, they humor me to avoid being scolded by their father. It would be easier if sister had sought our help sooner, but I am confident the youngsters will see reason. Love, Nefarian.

For example, Blue and Brass dragons are actually the same species, but any individual member can develop into either one based on if it is good or evil. Well, really I’m just worried because from what I’ve learned dragons have only really ever gone to their dragon heavens idk if that is just because of their natural alignments or never really diverging from their culture or if that is just something that happens. Let’s just assume they have happy lives and get into their heavens. (Don’t know if you know this the reason why dragons actually have a horde is to get into their dragon heaven)

Obsidian Dragons are a real thing in D&D, but this Black Dragon wears the name even better. Seradess: The Leader of Obsidian Dragons, would look at Onyxia’s good heart with slight disdain, but her strong will with a solemn approval. Seradess is like Tiamat, but more lawful. So lawful evil. The narrator turned this chaotic evil dragon into a neutral good one, and that feat would surely impress both Bahamut and Seradess’s master: Sardior, god of gem dragons and keeper of knowledge. Update: I'm glad I sparked some discussion! Reason I put Onyxia down as Lawful Good and not Chaotic Good was more relative to other Black Dragons, but I admit there was a flaw in my logic on that one. Based on that I now say she's Neutral Good, since she has some respect for a code (ie her new god and her father), but it doesn't control her.

Legends tell of a family of half-orcs, worshiping Ragathiel and having the mighty and evil blood of black dragons. Due to both their orcish and draconic blood, they often had violent and cruel tendencies which they always had to curb to serve the Archon Lord they worshiped. Yet rather than bemoan their heritage, they embraced it, viewing the opportunity to fight these urges as a great honor. To them, being good and law-abiding, rather than a choice, was a struggle, one which they took great pride in and that, with the severe yet loving way they cared for their young, was most often won. Not only that, but it was told that the black dragon which sired that bloodline was still around, protecting them, an old and powerful black dragon with scales that, despite their dark color, shimmered beautifully in the light like obsidian or onyx.

This is truly a touching and amazing story. I think, however, that somebody has been left out of most thanks in regards to this story: the awesome DM. There were several points at which he could have railroaded the story of Onyxia and her siblings, but instead, he let it evolve quite naturally, resulting in a story, that would pretty much warrant having a book or two wrote about. It would be really interesting to see, what adventures Onyxia and her siblings would experience, but alas, that is apparently left solely to our imagination.

Then the next video I thought it would be about how he used the dragon for powering through dungeons and stealing more dragons to make some kind of dragon army, and was surprised. This video I thought it was gonna be a grand finale about like them staying together, and this was the biggest surprise. For the first time ever I did not cry for a KZbin video, I completely bawled my eyes out. I'm already a sucker for animals but this. . . this just ruined me. I bet that DM felt so damn proud of himself, he probably made OP cry which is very important to all DM to touch the hearts of the players. They are one of the best DMs to have. I aspire to be like this one day, yes it may be shits and giggles now, but still there is an important story being made and helping the players not just in the game but in real life as well. I have actually been bullied before and have used what I learned from Dnd to helpe speak up to them and tell them to stop. They actually didn't know what they were saying was hurting me. I have also used Dnd to help myself confess to my crush, they rejected me but that was because they were straight not gay like me, it hurt but it really helped. Dnd is really like a therapy. Being a DM, and sometimes a player (when I can find someone willing other than me to DM) is really eye opening. It may be fake to some, but is real to others. That DM is just one of the best to allow the player to raise and teach that dragon. They probably saw how determined that player was, and let them do thier own thing. I have a player that has actually got an egg, they don't know what kind it is, (Phoenix) but still want to raise it anyway. I want to be just like this DM, IF my player is determined to raise that baby and be its father. The player is known to be kinda the dad of the group so I think they will not give up so easily. You never know tho.

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful and wonderful story of nurture vs nature! This is beyond inspiring to many people that believe in this, and not the usual boring of “everything is black and white” This is such a magnificent example of a great collaboration between you and your dm. With this is mind, I’m very happy to currently have a very open minded dm that has no issues with improvisation, while giving us players a challenge (like it suppose to be) and plot twisting. We’re currently tending the black dragon eggs from a popular very early campaign module in 5E, and the black dragon eggs are probably going hatch on our next session. Knowing about the black dragon psychology, reading past draconomicons, Fizban Treasury of Dragons plus the story of Onyxia! We feel more than ready to guide this little ones to a virtuous life. I just want to see an epilogue where OP is going to die soon, and his children come to stay for his last few days or weeks, telling him their stories and all the good they've done, especially Onyxia TwT damn, now I want to write fanfic of this
