Ive played racist paladins in the past but they tended to be either grizzled old dwarf who doesn't like elves or "innocently insensitive" girl who doesn't know better But the house rule is always "if I'm going to far then call me out on it"

I've had similar characters for RP purposes, the world's setting had us in a post-slavery society where certain species had been enslaved due to a xenophobic nation-state lead by a dragon cult of dragonborns leading a predominantly kobold army and all darkelves had been enslaved along with goblind and I was RPing a post-civil war goblin that was racist against anything lizard because "fascist dragons"... Lizard-folk druid had to work my character through his issues by explaining lizard-folk is not dragon/dragonborn/kobold ... We had an Afro-Carribbean kid (18 y/o) at the table who had a very anti-Caucasian grandma, he actually used to help me think up ways to be more on brand for "the bastard child of empire" plotline I was going for, but also had to rein me in several times and I appreciate that about him (especially as he was the LF druid)!

I've used racism and xenophobia as a plot point myself. Heck, in a recent campaign I ran, they were exposed to a fair bit of it in Menzoberranzan (drow culture isn't nice and it's kind of insulting to the average reader to try and sand the edges off of it in recent works, at least to me).

Currently playing a paladin that was raised in a nation that considers an enemy nation (both homebrew in a homebrew world) to be demons, so I play him as the most cheerful guy except when dealing with members from the other nation, since the divide is cultural and not race specific, it's near impossible to determime who's a foreigner unless they are specifically flagging it. So it's a big part of the campaign that almost half of the party IS from the other nation and my character doesn't know yet, so I can't wait for my character to have to contend with his own prejudice when dealing with the people he trusts most. And possibly rethink or double down on his beliefs depending on how the story goes. I feel like that's a much more interesting aproach to a xenophobic character.

Communication is the key. I've played a racist paladin before but I usually asked if anyone is uncomfortable. Of course my character's view changed little by little during our adventures

@@How_Do_I_Set_a_Username it was a fun character to play really. That character ended up establishing a town/settlement where every races is equal. She and the party also brokered a peace talk between two kingdoms. Our group of friends normally communicate on what we want to play with.

Agreed, although this player was taking something from outside of game as evidenced by his new character making a beeline after the same player character immediately. The previous behavior could have been explained as a paladin with a hatred for non human races up to the blatant attack once they were alone. That part would have justified stripping Paladin status until repented to their gods satisfaction (Atonement spell) as a dishonorable and evil action in the editions through 3.5 not sure on 5th edition though.

Not surprised either. Was in a game once that I joined later. An older player returned and slmost first thing he did was attack the rogue for actions he had commited that his character had no way of knowing. was claiming he had found out and stuff but had never gotten okay from DM or anything about it. He attacked the rogue and when the rest of the party helped the rogue he kept attacking . than the rogue got a crit that would have downed the character and the player left the call. So because he didn't get his way he quit. WE booted him from that and any other game from that point on

That's a failing of 5e, truth be told. At this point, I'm relatively sure *every* class has a spellcasting option to it. So honestly, unless the DM has a specific setting idea in mind and puts restrictions on character creation ahead of time, it's entirely possible for the party to be made up of six freakish monstrous races and each of them a spellcaster. D&D does really bad at low fantasy now lol

@@Syenthros In all honesty? D&D's never really been very good at low fantasy unless you ban a bunch of things. (Including severely nerfing spellcasters.) ...There have also been rules for playing those "Freakish monstrous races" since AD&D. In fact? A player favourite (drow) was a monster-only race. You're better off using something like Symbaroum, Song of Ice and Fire, or some Burning Wheel games for low fantasy.

I mean, not using every resource for survival is counterintuitive to Semuanya’s dogma, so the paladin’s proposal of leaving the bodies alone goes against lizardfolk customs. Besides, it’s not even evil as it has no negative effects nor is done with malicious intent.

I hate it when players can't get it through their heads that this is a game! BS mentality has no place in it. I could chalk the Paladin's player's behavior with the Paladin as trying to RP what he thinks his character would do. Some Paladins can be judgmental from time to time. However, attacking the Assassin as the next character he played. That was uncalled for. He deserved to be booted for that.

@@NiceOCGuy1981 In game conflict as long as it isn't derailing the game is ok but there was clearly something out of game going on with the Paladins player. Snubs and hostility while working with a character can be interesting but the ambush attack on a fellow party member is not in character for a paladin so highly suspicious. The revenge character in the next session removed all question on it being an out of game issue.

Yeah, at first I thought it was just unwise RP. Paladin's stereotypically don't get along with assassins nor monsters, so I can definitely see tension between a paladin and monstrous assassin (and that could even be the basis of a neat character arc). But as soon as he brought the same mentality over to the next character that crosses a line.

The paladin's player clearly had more personal issues going on, but I got the idea that if I was him, I would've maybe talked with the DM about turning my paladin into a villain and let me roll for a new character. It just sounds like such a juicy add to the romance to have a delusional, racist paladin brother-in-law tailing the party, looking for chances to take down the Lizard-Folk that "corrupted" his sister.

Reminds me of a pathfinder campaign I was a part of. I was playing a tiefling alchemist, who dipped into gunslinger. Our human cleric was a bit unsettled by my characters penchant for blowing things up, using mutagens, and blowing enemies away with his rifle. At the start of the campaign the cleric was fairly openly racist towards my PC, while my PC was always genuinely friendly and helpful to the cleric. Over time the cleric eased up and pestered my PC less, it actually became a running gag that my PC was covered in scars because he kept getting injured because he kept protecting the cleric. Eventually the two of them became regular drinking buddies and great friends, who always had each others back. At one point we were given a mission from the Cleric's church, we went to their church where all the NPCs were generally unfriendly towards my PC due to their beliefs. The paladin of the church and their highest local authority asked my PC to wait outside the church while he briefed the rest of the party. The Cleric got livid and told him that if my PC had to wait outside then he would wait outside with him, and this ruffled some feathers since the party was picked for the job specifically because the Cleric was in our party. The NPC paladin relented and let my PC stay in the Church for the briefing so long as I covered myself to hide my race.

When the GM asked Arkham, "Are you sure you want to do that?", I was expecting the bigoted paladin to end up becoming an oathbreaker. Very appropriate with how that "cold-hearted" attempted murderer died.

I don't think they'd straight up become a Oathbreaker. Oathbreaker implies you go the full 180 to the side of evil. Like making deals with dark gods or evil outsiders. Just breaking your Oath doesn't make you a Oathbreaker ironically IMO. I honestly hope when a version of Oathbreaker makes its way to 6E, they name it something else. If I was the DM I would just strip away his magical powers until he either joins the forces of evil fully(Oathbreaker) or redeems himself. Either way I'd throw this player out of the campaign regardless.

@@WexMajor82 I disagree I'm talking about the subclass Oathbreaker. Yes a already evil character can make the transition quick but a Devotion Paladin that recently lost their powers isn't at that stage already. Unless a DM is VERY lenient. "An oathbreaker is a paladin who breaks their sacred oaths to pursue some dark ambition or serve an evil power. Whatever light burned in the paladin's heart been extinguished. Only darkness remains." The subclass can create undead which mechanically is seen as a evil action outside of homebrew rules. They can also get abilities like Hellish Rebuke, Bestow Curse, Blight, Aura of Hate and Form of Dread abilities. You can't deny this subclass is evil. At the time this was released this was the only real evil Paladin subclass. The other options were Devotion, Ancients and Vengence.

A regular oathbreaker, that is, a paladin who just broke their oath merely loses his powers while an "Oathbreaker" be refered to as a Blackguard or Hell knight, maybe illrigger. Depending on the oath the paladin took if they took such actions especially against another PC, if I was DMing I might tell them that they can continue this but have access to none of their paladin powers, could not smite etc, because their god had forsaken them as they broke their oath or such.

In a campaign I played the "racist" Paladin, actually had an arc where he learned that his attitude was actually against his deity's wishes and that he was supposed to learn that not all "evil beasts" were in fact evil. Granted he stuck with the racist attitude for quite some time, and it did put a chip on the shoulders of some of the other players which lasted, at least I felt, for far too long. Finally, his character got over himself when he saved a pack of innocent kobolds from execution by a village of angry racist villagers. One of the kobolds was later returned by a player as his character (which wasn't planned) and followed our Paladin as a father figure. At first annoyed by "the little guy" and his accidental antics, the Paladin soon warmed up to the Little Guy (the Little Guy actually being the kobold's name after a time since the player never actually named him). The Paladin saw the error in his racist attitude and turned a new leaf and started training the Little Guy in the ways of being a Paladin. At the end of the campaign Sir the Little Guy was a well-respected member of the Paladins and our formerly racist Paladin was like a proud father.

This kind of reminds me of playing a teifling in my last campaign. people were nasty to him, unkind because of his demonic appearance, but he was also a very "Jack Sparrow" esque rogue. he wasn't the typical edgelord rogue, no. He was cheerful, suave and clever, and his tongue was as sharp as our bards. He took everything in stride, and occasionally used his Thaumaturgy ability to great effect in scaring off or terrifying those who got especially aggressive, preferring not to fight when he could. He considered people who treated him that way based on his looks to be morons, and were not worth his attention beyond what entertainment he could get from digging into them with insults n return for their attitude and laughing at feeble attempts to push him around. He just was very devil-may-care and gave zero craps about what others thought of him. The world was a stage to him, and he was there to enjoy the show.

Rules lawyer disclaimer: Lizardfolk can harvest bones from beast, construct, dragon, monstrosity, or plant creature of size Small or larger, NOT humanoids!!! (Which is probably to not upset the other players but still.... ) Secondly the Paladin broke his Oath when he was lying to the Party, about who started the fight, amoung other missteps. (Also bad DM IMO for using checks amonge the party)

I honestly don’t get it. To my experience, the monster races are the ones that are more popular to play. There may be an elf or some other human looking race, but I rarely see humans themselves, even variants. This is just my personal experience though.

Well according to an older (2020) D&d beyond study, ~25% of all created characters are human with the "monster" races having less than 6% each. It also showed that fighter was the most common with 13% People are less creative that you think, not to mention the munchkins who want the extra feat.

@@SleepySlann I’ll admit that even I have one human character but I designed them that way because I wanted an Alice in Wonderland inspired character. I took Wizard initiate feat and the Eldritch Knight subclass. I do get the appeal to some degree but this is literally my only character I have made, that is human out of maybe 50 or so. And I did say this was my personal experience. The actual statistic is interesting to know. It’s just not what I have experienced. Most people I know like to play with the interesting cultural backgrounds of the various monster races. But like I said, this is my experience and it carries that bias for that reason. It’s a pity more people don’t like the monster races. I’m personally looking forward to a design I have in mind for the new plasmoid race. I find the various races are fun to be creative with, especially in justifying why they are where they are for the story and why they join such a ragtag party.

This reminds me of someone I played with who always played monster races. He talked about how playing Humans was boring, and lumped Dwarves, Elves, and such as just Humans with different features. Short Human, pointy eared Human, bearded Human, and such. I don't have any story about his character being met with suspicion or anything, but I remember him as the "only monster races" player. Personally I have played a Tabaxi rogue, and plan to play a Dragonborn paladin in the future.

Gunning after another player just because they chose a inhuman race has to be an all-time low. One of the great things of D&D is how creative you can get with your character, and you shouldn’t be faulted for that.

That's why when I was a Paladin who was biased against Infernal creatures like tieflings/demons/imps/etc. I gave her a choice for the exorcism to not work to give her that freedom and so that my Paladin would be chill afterwards, believing that "A pure soul would want to have evil rid of themselves. So from simply trying to have the exorcism done was enough to prove she's not evil." She keeps her creative character, my paladin is content with keeping a "pure soul" safe

I find playing with inhuman characters to be fun. What becomes tedious and a real story killer to play with is the overly difficult due to being a projection of one's own belief character. If he didn't want to play with a monster character then he should have left the group. Not tried to run the guy off. It was also telling that he assumed no one else wanted to play with a monster character player when they were obviously RPing with him.

...strangely enough...the overwhelming majority of my characters have been human. Now...I've never taken it off the table like the cretin in the story...but I've played a few that held a bit of bias. After all...we can't expect everyone in a fantasy world to be completely open minded to working with those he's had to fight regularly. However...it becomes more about what kind of story a little drama in the RP can flesh out...and the character building...a character that believes themselves on the side of good coming to the realization that their noble aspirations and righteousness is really just a mask for their own narrow minded ideals and thirst for glory...makes for quite the effect in RP.

I out right love playing as a Minotaur. I'm actualy going through all the trouble of creating a Minotaur as a playable race in Rolemaster Standard Rules. This is not easy as rolemaster is a great deal more completed than DnD is. It's not as simple as giving states and abilities as DnD is to create a new playable race, but I love Minotaurs so much that I'm putting the work into it.

I am a lover of monster races too, but not for maybe any noble facts or curiosities, nor even for the looks (although it has a small part in my selection), but I am just thrilled to bring to my comrades an hero who wasn't supposed to be one, someone you weren't supposed to trust and that now is your best pal, someone that against all odds by mere chance of fate ended up with you and is willing to kill to stand by you, or just because I wanted to create a silly but not completely stupid Backstory which implied the monstrous race aspect to be a part of it. This is not to say that they're better than normal races, as I've created dwarves, humans and the like, but that I find them more of my liking. Some of the last characters I brought up are: a kuo-toa with family problems, an orc painter with rage problems, a grung in need for hugs, a kenku with PTSD, a Slaad with depression and... Ok too many.

Current party (once we resume) consists of Dhampir Tabaxi Rogue, Orc Fighter, Bugbear Artificer, and Mountain Dwarf Paladin - one of these is not like the others. That being said, I'm the Dhampir Tabaxi, my real life brother is the Orc - I also have all the books, so we can plan things out, so that we can overcome his inexperience, and I can learn new things. Bugbear has 20+ years of experience, and likes doing Min-Maxed guys anyways. Mountain Dwarf is not only new, he doesn't have ready access to any sources, so they don't mind being basic.

I once had a Lizardman character who wrote a cookbook through out the campaign. "To Serve God" It contained recipes for cooking various monsters. The title came from Zepth'thar'alax the black dragon his tribe worshipped has a god... until they ate him. The bones of Zepth'thar'alax were then laid to rest among his predecessors in office. His godly medallion then awaited his successor,(the medallion was secretly a command word activated necklace of strangulation)

I've killed party members before, had a rogue that couldn't keep his hands off others property. I noticed and didn't mention it. We split up to explore a cave and I beat him to death and tossed his body into a ravine. Succeeded my bluff check and the party believed he died in an accident. Continued that character for years and the DM eventually transitioned him into a major antagonist for later campaigns the DM made.

a long time friend and I are working on a concept as our game stagnated. One of us is a kobold who dresses like a goblin, and the other is a goblin who dresses like a kobold. The kobold says he's a tiny orc, and the goblin claims he's just a small dragonborn. Both are afraid to be smushed, so they lie. But naturally, their costumes are horrendous, and everyone's just going along with it. DM and group of players are all in on it, because we make sure nobody is going to be offended, angry, or make a racist character who wont come around quickly. Because that would just ruin the game.

The player's next character carrying on the same prejudices, though, was a problem, & the D.M. made the right call booting them at that point. Some of the most important rules in all of D&D: You are not your character & your character is not you; real-world & game-world do not affect each other whatsoever; & your previous characters are not your current character or visa versa. The cleric's line was far more brutal than the way the paladin went out. He couldn't look past his racism to see the complex person that was the rogue and thus, suffered the consequences of his misdeeds. Makes me wonder if he had succeeded in killing Khex, if he would have lost his paladin status from his god, as punishment from the DM.

Had a party with a racist paladin before, but his character arc was really cool. At first, he was very racist to a dragonborn and it did make the party a little uncomfortable. The only reason none of us left was because we knew each other and knew none of this was true to Irl. Then, as he interacted with the party, his attitude changed slightly. He was still racist, but he was softer in it toward his party. The big change happened when our Dragonborn was hit hard and on death saving throws. The Paladin threw his sword to the ground and charged to help him "Why..." was all that was asked. "You may be a damned Lizard, but you are also my comrade. If my order saw me ignore a comrade in need, no matter the race, they would turn their heads in shame." Afterward his interactions were different. He was still a little racist, but in a way you could tell it was the former racist learning how to communicate properly

Simic Hybrid, Kobold, Thri-Kreen, and Changeling have been some of my favorites so far in 5e, but I was a real fan of Shadar-kai and shades in 4e (I was a stupid edgy high schooler) and Killoren in 3.5. I've been wanting to try out a lizardfolk for a while now, but I haven't had a good opportunity to break out my Dark Brotherhood/Shadow Scale inspired "tax collector."

I've played racist characters. Every single time, I made sure that the racism was from a source of tragedy, never a sense of superiority. Out of all the rules I set for myself when it comes to giving characters flaws, this is the one rule I absolutely refuse to break. It's led way to some of the most badass BBEGs I have ever seen in a game since it drives home that the BBEG is so rotten to the core and influential that they make the rest of their race look just as evil as them, not that the BBEG actually cares and very definitely need to be stopped before their actions bring about something catastrophic.

I think the good thing about that form of racism, is that the character can change. If a dwarf has bad memories about Elves, and that drove them to hate the race as a whole, then it can bring about for a great arc when he meets (Or hell maybe falls in love) with one.

But playing a superior racist, it’s unfounded. Your character can come to learn and respect others he looks down upon. An example off the top of my head especially if you have a other player, play the other race your character hates and no matter what they will save you, can have your character slowly stop looking down on them. it’s a very slow build up but a good character to play. Or you could do a mix of both. A superior racist who’s views are supported by past traumas.

You should try the Selabast it's almost identical to lizardfolk but with the added RP of being a basilisk hybrid. They can use flesh to stone on any creature of small to medium size after every short rest, to balance this out they have to take the creature with them as they don't gain the normal benefits from food. They can go longer than normal without food but after every day they gain stacks of exhaustion.

However, when you lose, and then you make a new character just to try and get revenge, even though said character should know nothing about the previous conflict, that's when you took it too far. Arkham's player would have a conniption if he were in my current Pathfinder 1e group. None of my players have a human character. There is a NG female musetouched aasimar druid with a mountain lion companion, a N old male rat folk investigator, a CN female hobgoblin barbarian, a CG male gemsoul oread arcanist, and a genderless CG hombrewed slime race dragon disciple (homebrewed into a full class instead of just being a prestige class). The closest thing to a human would be the CG female werebear brawler NPC they picked up along the way. But she came with a CG female kitsune ranger, a N werecrocodile female lizardfolk shifter, and a LN male hobgoblin slayer. Arkham would probably have a stroke travelling in such a company.

A close friend of mine is very prone to derailing campaigns so the dm made them be a lawful good paladin. They were human and no person was beyond redemption, no murderer, no prostitute, no one. The life of every person was sacred. However elves, halflings, dwarves, etc weren't people. She had her paladin change their evil ways from enslaving and killing people and monsters to just monsters and helping people. She got her paladin to become the lawful good lieutenant of a minor and evil slaver into them becoming the BBEG of the campaign and turning the whole human kingdom into an extremely racist and xenophobic paradise for people because no person is beyond salvation every single one was precious and should better themselves and become the best version of themselves that they could be. But what about those that weren't people? Oof, yeah not going there. Just use your imagination and the answer is probably "yes". She had the group destroy the entire campaigns setting, the initial planned story, everything. Got them to fight for and against the slaver, ultimately killing him and having evil still win. All while still being lawful and "good" according to her tenets about humanity is good, not being human is bad, fire and sun good. Basically "praise the sun" and a twisted "humanity fuck yeah". She also made speeches based on actual speeches by evil people to get others to commit atrocities, speeches specifically adapted to the campaign.

I've played an Uncle ruckes high elf monk before, but It made everyone laugh cause it was only at random moments or when I met a stuck up elf. Half way through the campaign another high elf joined and they were a caster expecting to befriend me the fastest..nope we butted heads even when we were working together...by the end of the campaign I was her wingman and bride champion for her wedding to a dwarf(convinced her love is more important than heritage and continuing a bloodline).
