That passing place is a great idea. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in the UK. You just have to wait for them to turn.

European driving rules are mostly sign-based - they don't have as many street lights except in particularly busy areas. There's a sign that means "main road" - it's like a yellow diamond with a white outline, if you see it, that means your road is the main one and does not need to yield to other roads. If you don't see it, assume your road needs to yield. The sign discussed here (red cross on a blue background) is like a full version sign and she is correct, you cannot stop there even temporarily - no stopping, parking, or standing where that sign is present - there's a half version of it too, which is basically the same red circle with a blue background and ONE red line across it diagonally (i.e. missing the second stick that would make it a cross) and THAT sign means specifically no parking, however you can stop and the general rule of thumb is as long as the engine is still running, you can stay there. I.e. that sign would indicate an area where you can load/unload, pick up or drop off passengers, or just stop to check a map or something - as long as you don't turn the car off and get out of it, you're good.

Awesome tip, have seen this sign a lot on our road trips but the guides they give you at the car rental don't mention this particular sign.

Wish we had those. People will still just STOP here even if there's a lane like that to go around someone turning left. Not sure why you wouldn't just quadruple the length of it and give a left turning lane at that point, but whatever.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds really frustrating.

That's interesting. I've only ever seen a sign with an X on it when the sign is white and the "X" is black and there are two "R's" meaning "Railroad Crossing.' So this is really helpful. I also thought that last sign meant there was a tree and a bench nearby.

Japan have those signs too

Good info Jules. We definitely don't have that sign in the US. The first sign reminds me of the X-Men animated show. Where's Professor X?
