I've been going back and forth about buying this truck for a year. I've owned two 2nd gen Frontiers and loved them, and I mostly like this redesign, but Nissan definitely fell short in a few areas... the cameras are crap, no telescoping steering wheel, no seat bottom adjustment, halogen lighting on SV long bed (a $40k truck!), etc. They clearly went to the 'parts bin' in order to cut development costs, which is disappointing given how expensive this thing is. The good news is that you can get pretty nice discounts on the Pro4x now and I expect deals to get even better as demand continues to drop. Currently, $2k discounts are everywhere, but if I can get $4k discount on a Pro4x Premium, I might take the leap at the end of 2023.

My 2023 Pro-4X has the Homelink buttons on the underside of the rearview mirror. Perhaps the Homelink mirror is available as a replacement part, and you can add it to your truck. I had an ‘02 Dodge Ram that didn’t have Homelink until I got an overhead console with it on eBay and swapped it out. So far one of my biggest complaints is that the turning radius sucks, and when I have the steering wheel cranked all the way to either side I can even hear the front tires rubbing on something. This is with the original tires, as my truck only has 5200 miles on it. My #1 gripe is that you can’t turn off the rear parking sensors without them automatically turning back on whenever you change gears. This is a huge problem when trying to back a trailer up. I get that there’s a button right on the dash in front of the shifter to disable them, but when you’re backing a trailer up sometimes you have to pull forward to make corrections, and if you don’t hit the button again, the truck thinks you’re going to hit the trailer and it beeps like crazy and slams on the brakes. My neighbor watched me back a trailer into my driveway and asked me what the heck was wrong, and if I needed any help, even though he saw me back a trailer in just fine a hundred times with my old ‘05 Chevy Colorado.
@AllThingsOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the tech sensors are super annoying. I really wanted one without them, but could not find one. I don't tow a lot, so I have less of that issue, but I could see how annoying that would be with a trailer.

Way overlooked an underestimated, mostly because of simple stuff like not having ALL the fancy gadgets and tech or being simpler from an engine and transmission stand point. But, for your dollars, you're getting a dead reliable, sturdy, well built truck that will last a lot longer than most of the domestic alternatives and you don't see them nearly as much as Tacomas, :D.
@spyder000069 Жыл бұрын
I am normally a ford customer but I have been seriously considering the frontier. however, it seems that most things about the truck are just passable. The cameras, the potential for carbon buildup, some people say the paint is thin, the old steering wheel, and the turning radius all potential issues. I have a f250 but was considering smaller trucks for daily drivers and have a little fun with. I like the idea of the naturally aspirated engine and the possibility of going king cab as we are about to be empty nesters but it seems like with a new ranger and Tacoma coming out as well as the tech in the Colorado that the Nissan is pretty far behind. especially when a pro4x MSRP is pretty close to what the other brands MSRP is when I build one out. unless there's some major discounts this month, it'll make more sense to wait it out and see if pricing drops more when the other brands bring out their new gen trucks.

About the cruise control auto pilot... I am a truck driver and my semi truck have a full automatic transmission with 13 speed. The main computer on the first 30 minutes driving the vehicle try to select the best gear ratio time to shift as it's learning everything from the pulling weight all way to the road if flat or hilly and the speed. So, my suggestion will be if possible try to get some payload on the bed of the truck and run for 30 min, then set on cruise control to see how the transmission will work. If you have the same result as driving the truck empty well you may be out luck because that will be absolute how the transmission manufacturer designed and programed everything. Now, if any difference between how the transmission works between empty and payliad driving, well... I would look to speak with somebody on the service department from the dealership. And for some people that may read my comment, I know we can't compare apples with pears but the technology used in almost all type if vehicles today are not so different from each other when performing the same task. Hope that may help you and good luck.

Good thoughts! Thanks for sharing! I've got quite a bit of stuff on the rear of the truck now (drawer system, RTT, bed rack, etc.) so I'm fairly loaded and it hasn't seemed to make much of a difference, so I fear that it's just the way it's programmed. I've gotten used to it and learned some work arounds (some people have commented that you can just shift it into manu-matic mode and it'll hold the gear you're in in cruise instead of shifting around so much).
@gutto7952 Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOverlanding That's a bit weird; about the way this transmission is working even because I don't want say that we can compare the semi truck mechanical design and purpose are the same as a pickup truck but to me something is not right. I am not saying your truck have a transmission problem but is always a possibility; my semi truck it's rate for a 80.000 lbs GVW with a load on a 53' trailer; I don't pickup nothing over 35.000 lbs of load and even when pulling less than that weight about 20.000 lbs going up a long 3% hill or greater as the semi starting to loose speed the transmission down shif 2 gears at time like from 13 to 11 to 9 and to 7, but after reach the 7th gear a will down shift one gear at time if need. On a semi truck with a manual transmission the high point on the rpm to up shift gear is 1500 on an automatic transmission is between 1800 to 2000 rpm's. So, when the transmission in my truck select the gear disregard which one it is a will shift up once reach a 1500 rpm or hold that gear until reach between 1800 to 2000 rpm until shift a gear up if the vehicle have gain speed enough for that with the cruise control auto pilot on and engaged. So, the transmission in your vehicle should not try to shift gears going up hill if not necessary, should be sturd until the vehicle gain speed enough to up shift gear again. I guess my best idea to offer you jyst to put an easy on your mind about that would be rent out another truck with the same engine displacement for a day and test drive to see if the transmission will perform like the one on your truck. And if you decide to do that I will really appreciate if you could let me know what was the result. Thanks for your reply back on my inicial comment and good luck.

I have a 2013 Nissan Frontier SL and the front passenger seat folds totally flat for sleeping. Not sure if it's because the passenger seat is electric in the SL or not. Do you know if any of the Third Gens do this? This is how I plan on sleeping in the new Frontier if it's possible. I'm just getting into overlanding and your videos have been very helpful. So a big thank you.
@AllThingsOverlanding Жыл бұрын
I think that was a function of the higher trim trucks? Maybe Pro-4x or up trims? I don't know if the third gens do it but I could try to give it a shot to see how far the passenger seat would go! I'll try to report back once I get a chance to try it.

@AllThingsOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the thing is though that compared to a lot of other competitors, if you went with the bigger tires/lift option from the factory, you're going to pay an arm and a leg. If you want the warranty though and don't want to have to install parts yourself, that makes perfect sense, but I was fine buying the truck for a significant savings over a comparable Toyota and then just modding it myself for much less. But, agree that I wish the Pro-4X had more "performance mods" than just the locking rear diff and light duty armor.

I do, but they’re my kids, so they aren’t exactly full-size. I think the seats are comfortable, but there isn’t a ton of legroom back there. Absolutely hate the camera as well, I’ve read forums where maybe it could be the processor for the camera due to the chip shortages, but who knows, another thing that I am starting to not like about the truck is the suspension, I feel like it’s way too stiff sometimes but that could just be me, I plan on doing a titan swap with the fox shocks, the kit is around $3200, it’s should lift the truck 3-4 inches according to them.
@AllThingsOverlanding Жыл бұрын
That's a great lift (you're talking about the All Dogs Offroad one?). I was thinking about it, but since the truck is so new, I just went with the RC Killa lift from them to keep the stock shocks until they wear out while getting a couple inches of lift. I kind of feel like the suspension is sort of soft for a stock 4x4, but like you said, who knows. It's just what we're used to.

I had 2017 Tacoma and the cruise control did the same exact thing. Highly annoying. It sounded like the engine was going come through the hood. I live in Missouri with the hills. Haha, I said that there wasn’t a lot to dislike about it! And because of the bigger bulkier hood than the previous gen‘s the cameras get a lot more used so the quality being bad makes usability pretty reduced. Just seems weird that on a 2023 truck they would use such poor quality cameras.

I agree with the cameras, they should have upgraded the cameras a few years ago ( I’ve had 3 Titans and now a 22 Front Pro4) poor quality! I’ve got no issue with the cruise as I’m pretty much flat road driving ( but I’ve heard there is a software fix) Main thing I really hate is the safety system when reversing with a trailer! You need to go in and disable the system or it jams on the brake thinking there is something you’re going to hit! If I have my truck in Tow Mode it should automatically disable the rear safety braking. It’s a real pain when I’m trying to back into a site and I forget to disable it then is jamming on the breaks causing traffic to wait while I fumble through the system trying to find how to disable it!! Fix this Nissan!!

Spot on. The cruise control on my 2023 Pro4X is mind numbing. Whoever designed it is a complete moron. The cameras are functional but they are so much lower in quality than nearly every other vehicle brand. It makes no sense at all. People have complained about Nissan cameras for years. The could spend $100.00 more and put good cameras on these trucks. I have the top version of the Pro4X and it has Homelink.
@AllThingsOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I love Nissan so much but after years of hearing the same simple things over and over, I just wish they would listen to us, 😀. We can overcome these few simple things to turn a solid entry in the segment into a leader! Also, now that all the new Toyota, Chevy, and Ford trucks have been announced, Nissan is pretty much the last one standing with an NA V6 which I think it a plus from a reliability and longevity standpoint. Guess we’ll see what happens!
@GSPDUCKDOG Жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsOverlanding I would think the cruise control issue could be corrected with a computer update. Maybe they will do this if enough people complain. The vast majority of the vehicles I have owned didn’t have any cameras so I can live with the crappy cameras. It’s just short-sighted on Nissan’s part to use such low quality cameras. Overall, the truck is great. I owned a 2005 Titan and a 2018 Titan before this and they all had technological shortcomings compared to the competition but they all ran without any problems and I like Nissan seats. I couldn’t get myself to feel good about the turbo 4 cylinders the others are offering. Nissan as a company doesn’t have any better quality rep, if not worse than the Chevys or Fords so that argument is a wash. I tried the Frontier Pro4X and Tacoma TRD Sport a few days ago. The Pro4X was definitely quicker than the TRD but I found seats not very comfortable. The stretched out position was better for me in the Taco. Cabin looks nice, screen looks good but the camera is terrible. Kinda a waste of that good resolution. The big plus for me is that it’s one of 2 remaining choices with a 6ft bed in a crew cab model.
@AllThingsOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Agree to disagree. I’ve owned them all and know a lot of people with Fords and chevys with serious issues (trans, engine, etc) but have had probably 12-15 Nissans with few if any problems. As for comfort, that’ll be something that everyone decides for themselves and same for seating position. Of course, though, everyone’s going to have their own opinions about all midsize trucks so it just comes down to what you’re comfortable with.

@AllThingsOverlanding11 ай бұрын
I mean, I like a 6" lift as much as the next guy but for the broad market, most people would hate getting up into that truck. The new trucks do look pretty low, but real world clearance between the bottom of the armor and the ground is the same as the Tacoma TRD Pro (which got a small lift over the stock Tacoma height) so it's technically as tall already as the top trim offroad version of the Tacoma. I threw a 1.5/2" lift on mine (RC Killa kit from All Dogs Offroad) and for me, that made it pretty much perfect and it fits 33's with some relatively slight modifications (I also have 1" spacers which are most of the issue with rubbing, not the height or tire size).

Surprisingly too, the Frontiers have more configurations that pretty much all of their competitors.
