Vacheron Constantin Alternative: Baltany Retro 1921

Good review of this little gem. I own a couple of VC's, including a 70's cushion case, so I have a benchmark. I've tried on the real 1921 a couple of times, the big 40mm is a really big beast on the wrist, even if it's thinner. I've bought this for a bit of fun, and I have to agree, for the price the quality is amazing. I just hope the movement doesn't wear out too quickly. I like that Baltany have styled this after the super rare Excellence Platine version with frosted dial/applied indices. VC put that on a dark blue strap (although being VC the threads on the strap were platinum!!). Think I'll try it with a similar colour.

I think the movement will be good for sometime. I think they are doing all the right things with those different variants. Anyone can do a submariner homage, but they are different.

do you feel the 1921 is too big for a 6.75' wrist? I felt the 40 had much more "presence" than the 36.5. Thanks!

Great review 👍. I bought the Miyota 9039 centre seconds version and love it, no QC issues, beautiful dial, great polishing and it wears well. I like the way Baltany don't do a straight copy, the applied indices and different hand design are nicer than the VC in my opinion. I wear it inside my left wrist and the dial lines up perfectly when I look at the time. It is now my favourite watch.

This looks great! I have a 7.25” wrist too and looks great on your wrist. I see they now have a manual wind version that is 9.5mm thick. Seriously considering this now!

FYI, to wear this watch correctly while driving or racing it should be worn on the underside of the wrist otherwise you won't be able to read it.

I guess it depends on what orientation you have your hands. At the 10 and 2, that would be ridiculous, at the nine and three, you can argue it…

Nice review! Thank you! I appreciate all the details you have provided here which makes the buying decision much easier. I agree with you completely on the idea of having affordable hommage watches so at least everyone can enjoy having great designs in their collections. Fortunately, the majority of hommage watches today are produced with SS cases and reliable quartz/automatic movements, so one can at least be assured of getting a reasonably good life out of them. Further, is also great that hommage watches are legal so unlike 'copies' they are not shameful to patronize. I plan to buy the same version of the Baltany soon. They also make a quartz version but from the photos, the indices and the pointers on those are under- & over-stated respectively. And the sub-dial at 3 o'clock is too stark. And I believe that when buying a watch, you must be fully satisfied with your purchase and never compromise or you regret that decision for a very long time. Baltany did a great job except it's too big. I am yet to see this not look very big on someone's wrist. 38mm square watch is big! Should have copied the 36mm from vc.

The original has printed black indices, so the applied silver indices and different style hands make a significant difference. If it is too close, look at the Miyota 9039 powered centre seconds version, I liked it so much that I bought one and it is extremely well made.

@@allthingsrandom8137 I saved for a steel Rolex Daytona for 3 years. Bought it retail at 12k. Love it and wear it everyday. Totally achievable compared to a 30k watch.

There's a difference between saving up for a $3000 watch and a $30,000 watch. The cost of the Baltany is far less than 1% the cost of the VC. The cost wouldn't make a dent in saving up for the VC. And you very well may not want to spend that much in a watch. It would be financially irresponsible to do so. The homage is a far smarter choice in this case, unless you are lucky enough to already be able to comfortably afford a $30,000 watch with niche appeal.
