"representation matters." YES. I worked with homeless women with children and we had a 12 year old with natural hair who would often talk about wanting my hair, and it broke my heart. I would always tell her how beautiful she was (I'm not at all joking their mamma made three absolutely beautiful children).

I experienced similar things when I was in Togo, Africa. I was the only one in our group who was fluent in french, so wherever we went the kids would always come and talk to me and they told me about wanting skin like me, hair like me, eyes like me - it was so sad. The worst part was that 80% of the ads I saw featured white or mixed looking people. Black people don't even get enough representation in countries where they make up like 99% of the population.
