I experienced similar things when I was in Togo, Africa. I was the only one in our group who was fluent in french, so wherever we went the kids would always come and talk to me and they told me about wanting skin like me, hair like me, eyes like me - it was so sad. The worst part was that 80% of the ads I saw featured white or mixed looking people. Black people don't even get enough representation in countries where they make up like 99% of the population.

Its a shame that the first thought that crossed my mind was "What! They allow her to wear her curly hair!" This is very refreshing. I am still waiting to see a newscaster with very curly hair like mine and hers. Sadly I think that's going up be awhile because people are offended when Black women don't straighten their hair in professional places like the news but I am still waiting for the day!

And it makes no sense because it is just hair! How can people be offended? Can't wait for there to be more change and more acceptance of curly hair!

Same. When I cheered professionally I wasn’t allowed to wear my hair natural because “the other black girl did it first” and they said they wouldn’t be able to tell us apart despite us looking nothing alike. Never going back.

@@shhhh6174 I just. Can't. Smh. Soooooo we both can't wear our natural curly hair? Hmmmm. So everyone else can't wear their naturally straight hair because you also may not be able to tell them apart right? 🤔 Someone make it make sense.

@@shulsyt5933 Policing of hair goes all the way back to how slaves had to wear their hair in the cotton fields and plantation house. Did you hear that in California they now have anti discrimination laws for hairstyles and textures? I mean that's great but not to be negative but people will still get discriminated against. They just won't get a call back after the interview. But I guess your manager can't say "Your braids don't fit the standards of this company" and fire you because of that like they did that girl young girl that worked for Banana Republic.
