I really like Chris Beason evaluations. If you listen carefully you get an honest sailors’ perspective evaluation of the yacht. Yachting World’s evaluator seems to be just a salesman for the manufacturer. Consequently I disregard anything the other guy says as sales BS and listen carefully to Chris’s evaluations. I do not make this comment casually as I have listed to scores of evaluations over the past few years and do not wish to name or impune the other guy but instead to complement Chris’s work.

I used to sail back in the 80's & boat design has come so far since then. All the little details have been thought out & major things like swim steps, running all the lines back to the cockpit and roller furling jibs are standard now. We got a roller furling system around 1982 or 83 & it wasn't cutting edge but it got attention around the marina. People wanted to see it & ask how we liked it. No doubt sailing is still work but new designs have added many conveniences & gotten rid of many of the daily hassles. I really like many new boats out nowadays. Hopefully I will be able to eventually get out on the water again.

Would love to see more comparison versus the Garcia 45... her sister ship? How's the engine access... eg. change the starter, belts, impeller ok
@TeeFunkable8 жыл бұрын
I agree. However, maintenance access aside, the differences between the two are quite apparent: this one is lighter and probably a bit faster, half the price and much better suited for the palm tree run. The garcia has better, well everything, but is much heavier and most of it just unnecessary unless one is headed towards the poles of this planet. Now I'd pick this one and have the sail controls from the garcia (the new. allures 45.9 pretty much does that) and if I was headed for the poles.. Well, I'd probably go for a boreal.

I agree with Yani. The boat looks fantastic, and is really roomy, and while I'm definitely no expert, I too have some doubts about how good the boat would be in really rough conditions... The wide beam, shoal draft, flat bottom, and lack of significant lateral area could make things pretty unpleasant if you get into really rough weather, particularly when running downwind...

A below deck compartment with a window, is a great idea, rare to see on some sailing yachts of which dark compartments may create a vessel health hazard of sea molds, which can grow on ropes, lines and other material and dark, unlit interior compartment surfaces. Ending the sea mold, and the winner is... a glass doored storage compartment! Also a great precautionary measure to prevent health ailments on longer journeys.

Good boat but I wouldnt want a keel-less boat in blue water. The danger of knocking down is that much more in a squall. Sure, the owners and designers knew there was a price to pay for being able to beach the boat or make it into shallow waters but personally Its not a price I would be willing to pay for a blue water cruiser. Other than that, fantastic ship.
@TeeFunkable8 жыл бұрын
Depends on how one sees it. The stability curves are pretty much on par with keel boats, she just needs more ballast. However, the ability to raise the keel in tough conditions is definitely a huge plus to avoid knockdowns and broaches. When the keel is lifted, larger waves coming to the beam are far less likely to knock the boat down - instead she will just slide along the wave. Also, when going downwind the keel can be lifted, these boats will track just fine with just the little stub keel but it will pretty much removing the risk of broaching. And of course there is no chance of loosing the ballast as it is built in the hull. Only legitimate concern I can see with this design is the inverted stability being quite high. But since she is somewhat less likely to suffer a knock down... I dunno. But there is a reason why some of the most serious exploration boats (garcia, same hulls as this, boreal) are built with alu hulls and lifting keels.

Maybe you should explain this theory to Skip Novak lol
@TeeFunkable6 жыл бұрын
Or perhaps to Jimmy Cornell who recently did the Northwest passage on a similar type aluminium CB boat? He is a sailor who goes to places much like Novak, could have any boat and chooses a centerboarder. And his previous trips on a even much lighter alu centerboarder. There is a reason why this the most common setup in the serious french expedition boats designed for heavy duty, high latitude sailing. And it's been thoroughly tested from NW passage to Cape Horn. Does standard keel types have benefits over cb? Sure. Bringing the ballast down keeps the boat lighter as less ballast is required and the boats can carry a taller rig and less inverted stability. Particularly upwind is usually better on fixed keel. Does cb have benefits over fixed keel? Sure. No risk of losing the keel, broaching free downwind sailing, wave sliding... Two different things, both with their own limitations and benefits.

I agree with Ariana... just one more thing to leak into the boat. Most C/B boats have wet bilges... You aren't going to take your million dollar boat onto a beach when the conditions are rough so why not take your $4000 dingy anyway? Very decent yacht. thoughts are whether the keel is lead, iron, and type as others mentioned. Second is that the performance in my humble opinion is below average. For comparison, our CS30 cruiser/ racer with 5 large Newfoundlanders on it was running a consistent > 7.5 knots on a beam reach in 15-20 knot wind. That's similar to this yacht. Further, I tend to disagree with the reviewer about it being "fully loaded". Naval architects and engineers have studied this issue endlessly and essentially result is: in a monohull, increasing displacement by large amounts like over 10% reduces speed by 1-2%, whereas muliihulls are effected in a more 1:1 fashion. Anyway, I would expect more performance from a boat of this size, especially being aluminum + more stiff, and with the newer form stability form factor ... beamier aft section
@TeeFunkable8 жыл бұрын
Yup. Plenty of cruiser/ racers in the 30+ feet range will be far faster than this. This is hardly a surprise. Even the 33 finngulf I spend time on regularly makes better speed and that design is close to 20 years old now. However, there are some variability within this. First of all, they were unfamiliar with the boat. The smaller version of this, the 39.9 clocked over 9 knots in a test, albeit it was far less loaded. Whether that difference came from the trim, loading or design is of course an educated guess at best. And since I'm not that familiar with the studies I'm not arguing against them, but I would most definitely like to read them if you can point me to them.Were the tests based on quantitative modelling or real life performance with less than perfect trim? I would still argue that trade of performance is worth if for this design though. Having two large water tanks, plenty of storage, smooth motion and most of all a relaxed sail down the trades with the keel up easily beats one more knot in my books. Not to mention a nice anchorage in five feet of water after crossing the ocean... But it would most certainly be interesting to see the new 45.9, that replaces this boat during this year, keel types compared. It will have ballasted swing keel as an option for the centerboard. Same AVS, 2200 or so kilograms less ballast due to it's location. It will be a direct comparison of the same hull with the difference being in weight.

I'm curious about these yachts. Does having the centerboard instead of a weighted keel make it heel farther?
@man-a-tee46708 жыл бұрын
Keel type is hardly the main deciding factor, although they did mention in the review that they opted for a second reef in just 20 kts of wind on this boat. That said, keel type doesn't decide heeling - location and amount of ballast and the shape of the hull does. But of course, since the centerboard is unballasted, more weigh is required in the bilge to achieve the same amount of correcting moment compared to a normal keel, where the center of mass can be brought further down. That's why this boat would be lighter, if it had a standard keel. All about that leverage. A lifting keel with a bulb would achieve the best of both worlds, but they are far more complex, requiring hydraulics to raise and certainly can't be fitted with a sacrificial bolt that allow the keel to swing up in case of groundings like these centerboarders can. Nor can they raise the keel and keep their stability - a major safety disadvantage in very rough weathers compared to a centerboard. Then again, should all go to hell, they would have less inverted stability if capsized, unless the hydraulics fail...

I think the anchor aboard the vessel is unattractive. Maybe something with a brighter surface is in order. Usually if you have a piece of equipment that looks and works good, it makes it more valuable to the operator, as well as the way it is taken care of. I am sure the type metal the anchor is made of is able to be chrome plates, or shined, like other brightwork, that makes it attractive.
