@garyjarvis27302 ай бұрын
I wonder how many people understand how risky this journey actually is. You are beyond the end of the World in a place with few options and completely unforgiving. It is quite easy to simply disappear in this vast emptiness. Only the marvel of modern communications makes this even possible. Great episode.
@dancarter4822 ай бұрын
Agreed! And two glaring details. 1. Having to rely on _Iridium_ which predates Starlink by decades and is awesome but virtually unknown to young people, everyone argues the toss about it and yet here we are with living proof. And 2. Wearing flotation life jackets but not harnesses - means they expect to fall overboard and that they can be recovered before hypothermia has fatal effect rather than avoiding going overboard at all. Not sound practice.
@garyjarvis27302 ай бұрын
@@dancarter482 While a harness is certainly good insurance it is not full proof. If you have too long a lead you can still go overboard and be dragged by the boat in deadly cold water. If you don't have a system to alert the other crew members all that happens is they can easily drag your lifeless body on board when you're discovered. Of course if you are a strong swimmer, and lucky, you may find your way back on board under your own power. Professionals who depend on lifelines usually have 2 shorter leads and will always have one attached before moving the other to a secure point. It complicates movement but is pretty failsafe if done correctly. Calm water can lull even salty sailors into a false sense of security, but then life is a series of measured risks anyhow.
@dancarter4822 ай бұрын
@@garyjarvis2730 If your lanyard is too long and you can't clip in twice to pass an obstruction you shouldn't be working on deck anyway. You just made my point again!

If anyone wants to get more of an idea of how insane this journey is : look up Franklin's expedition. They were British explorers trying to find the NW passage during the 1850s, they went with 2 wooden tallships and got stuck in the ice for around 2 years before attempting to walk to civilization. In the end none of them made it out alive. They were the most technology advanced and well equipped explorers of their time too.

It's always interesting to recognise the drinking salutations from different countries which often share a commonality...at 37:15 the charming captain toasts 'Nice leg everyone' which brought to my mind the toast often made in Italy of 'auguri in tutti gambi'...another reference to the leg. Great to see your safe arrival to the lagoon. Often when you watch a film where the destination is reached after a relatively risky approach, you are drawn into the atmosphere by a tense build-up of mood music and voice-over...in this approach to the lagoon I found the tension to be very real and yet it was the result of the consistently level and factual monologue by the captain whose manner is so often laced with sang-froid and humour...for me he (and the crew) are absolutely the best heads to be with in dangerous or trying circumstances. Does any of the above make sense !? Kudos to all the crew.

Hello my friends! I've been avidly following you for many months now. I live on a 42 ft ketch near Vancouver BC, and you are very inspiring to me as a sailor! Here's an interesting coincidence: the boat behind you in this video, Golivin Bay, just completed sea trials at the shipyard beside Shelter Island Marina where I live! To think that ship was built here in Vancouver and now it's all the way up in Nome Alaska! My neighbor installed the electrical systems on that ship! I like these little synchronicities along the way! Happy sailing our Intrepid Travelers!
