When I started drinking in the 60s a pint of beer was one shilling and sixpence, a bottle of Newcastle brown ale was two shillings and sixpence. Five pounds lasted me a week. That's what I call the good old days. I love Jack and Victor in Still Game.

Two and six for a bottle of dog. At room temperature I hope.
@SloopyDog Жыл бұрын
@@Rippedflesh69 I could get 8 bottles of the brown bomber for a pound. In those days before cold shelves, the bottles were at room temperature. Some of the beer was in barrels behind the bar, with wet towels on them to keep them cool. Beer was one shilling and sixpence a pint. £5 kept me going all week. I could buy 4 gallons of petrol for a pound and get 2 shillings change On the downside wages were crap. I had to do jobs on the side to keep me going. I was young and fit and ready to do anything to make money.

@SloopyDog2 ай бұрын
@@AirPowered In those days maybe £50 per month. I agree it didn't seem like a lot compared to wages now. money went a lot further in those days. We had no computers or mobile phones. I don't think we even had a tv. Today most people are well-off with their smart TVs, computers, and mobile phones. It has become a got-to-have society. I struggle now as I am on a basic old-age pension. I would gladly go back to those times. I was happy then. I am not now.

I stumbled across this series on Netflix a few months ago, and became an instant fan - I find it amazing how Jack and Victor have managed to bring this series to life. This is the best episode of all of them.. Absolutely Brilliant! (.. or a term used here in Canada - Really Awesome!!) Winston really deserves to be happy, and it looks like Winnie will make this happen. Sorry to see the series has run its course . As a parting comment from Toronto, Canada, I'm proud to have learned new slang to add to my vocabulary!
@garylawless36084 жыл бұрын
Hi Jane - I too came across ‘Still Game’ on Netflix almost by accident, and I have not enjoyed a show as much as this one for many years. I have a Scots friend who had never seen it either, and we watched it laughing our selves silly all the while. Unfortunately I missed parts of the last series as I don’t think Netflix broadcast it? I have since been catching up on their earlier endeavours on KZbin. Their show ‘Chewin’ the Fat’ is very funny. Cheers from Australia.

Test for Scottishness Question: gonnae no dae that? If they reply correctly then they’re Scottish or Scottish friendly….. That should be the test for Scottish residency. Chewin the fat and still game are (no joke) often good education of modern Glasgow culture. You learn the slang, the types of people, the humour, traditions (Hogmanay and traffic cone on wellington) a bitter rivalry with Edinburgh. Glasgow reminds me of the late duke of Edinburgh HRH Prince Philip (pardon the irony) Leader in all but name………denied their due credit but never the less they carry on, supported by their own confidence, duty. He’s a king without a crown. We’re a capitol without centre of government. Also he’s a duke of Edinburgh. Educated in a Scottish boarding school. And he’s a descendant of Robert Bruce and Mary Stewart! I don’t want separation from The wonderful UK, but if we did have PHILIP MOUNTBATTEN as our monarch, splitting duties with HM. That be nice. Shame it would never happen. RIP your royal highnesses. (If you hate him because he’s rich, powerful, unelected and privileged. I invite you to research his younger years. He been through some hard shit, and came out the other side as a man of integrity, charity, loyalty and humour. Yes he was granted this power, but focus on what he chose to do with it. Was he making the world better or worse. I imagine it must be really hard to argue he wasn’t a benefit even if you’re the most Republican Brit on this land.
