Noise is such a complicated beast when you dive into it, but this is a very good overview. Also, I haven't worked with Reed instruments at all. I'll have to check them out.

I’ve read that it isn’t A-weighting that better correlates with the human response to noise levels but C-weighting.

Anyone know what the Noise sampling plan is supposed to look like?

Do we measure the noise close to the ear of the worker or from the machinery or process generating the noise?
@AllySafety
@AllySafety 4 ай бұрын
If you're doing monitoring with a dosimeter, it should be in the hearing zone like clipped on the collar. If you're doing an area measurement with a handheld monitor, focus on the areas that employees are usually occupying. If you're trying to understand a particular process or machine, that's when I'd specifically monitor around the machine.

Can a sound level meter be used to measure the loud music played by a neighbour who lives in a detached house in a rural area.

Yes. It’ll record the overall noise level.

Is there any decibel meter that set off an alarm so that noisy people should tone down their loud voice? Please help me I need this at home for my kids. Thank you.

What do you do with lunch breaks? Do you add an extra 30 mins on the duration with the dosimeter or turn it off during lunch break?
@AllySafety
@AllySafety 2 жыл бұрын
I usually just keep the dosimeters going through lunch since that also is part of their total shift noise exposure. Also, some locations have quiet lunchrooms but many others might not like an operator who eats in the cab of his equipment or the machinist who takes his break next a noisy CNC machine. Overall, it’s just best to keep the dosimeter measuring.

Can you help me please? My working environment is 75db, the health & safety manager says that I shouldn’t need to protect my ears for an 8 hour shift, because I shouldn’t incur any damage to my hearing. However, after several years working in this environment, I’ve noticed a noticeable difference in my hearing. I now choose to use earplugs because I believe they reduce high frequencies which are damaging and not taken into account. My question (theory) is - decibels are pointless to evaluate how dangerous sounds are to the human ear, because it’s not the volume of sound which damages hearing, but the frequency? Is it possible to have a 75db reading at any frequencies? Are there more and less dangerous frequencies?

Okay, I'm gonna try to keep this brief so I don't overwhelm you with info. I'll just summarize by saying not all hearing loss is noise-induced. Also, noise levels can be very dynamic depending on the task, acoustics, frequencies, and more. Do you have a baseline hearing test to refer to? How long has it been since you've had your hearing tested? Also, make sure to bring this up with your doctor at your next appointment. Medical issues can contribute to hearing loss. I would also start to protect your hearing. If I were in your shoes, I'd buy a pack of earplugs on Amazon or go for Decibullz (also on Amazon) which are custom molded and you can do them yourself. If you go for foam earplugs, go for ones with at least an NRR of 22 and put them in properly. I'll have a new video out about that soon too. If you don't think the noise level in your workplace noise levels are accurate, download the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app. It's fairly accurate and a good starting point. That may give you some more insights.

Thanks! I’m 32 years old, never suffered from hearing issues before. I work for a well known global automotive manufacturing company and they have an on-site occupational health department, because different areas of where I work require tests for various types of jobs. My last hearing test with the occupational health was at the beginning of last year and I passed. I’ve been a musician since the age of 13, I also studied music composing and producing at university, so my ears have always been very sharp and sensitive (in a good way). I haven’t been in a music industry educational/working environment since 2015. Using the same earphones or speakers, I listen to my old music production work, and notice that it’s not a bright and clear as it used to be. My hearing is worse if I’ve recently been at work. I’m not sure if this is relevant, but I had a car accident in January last year and the curtain airbags to my left deployed, causing roughly 24 hours of temporary hearing loss in my left ear (after my hearing test at work). If I don’t wear earplugs at work, after a while my left ears start to hurt. My workplace has lots of Howard Leight LS500 earplug dispensers around the factory, and I know how to insert them correctly - squeeze them so they’re thin and then insert them, letting them expand to the contours of my ear canal.

Hello. Could you please tell me how I would measure the decibel level coming from my gaming headset? Do I just hold the device up to the set?
@AllySafety
@AllySafety Жыл бұрын
You could probably do it using one of the dosimeters from this video because they have a small mic that would fit under your headset earmuff. Just keep in mind, the noise levels I mentioned as being too high are supposed to me measured further away. Since your headset is right next to ear, you’d want the level to be even lower.

It's already difficult to work in a warehouse with 'normal' noise levels; give it to a few employees or a very loud individual to make it more of a hell on the ears!!
