Could you talk about how best to go about planning post-camp travel as a first time counselor (ie. having no friends prior to arriving)? How much should you have planned and researched before camp compared to what you plan and decide when you've made friends? Also, do you think it's best to: book a return flight and just have to commit to finishing traveling then; or risk having to pay a LOT more for a flight home that you book more last minute but would probably fit whatever travel plans get made? (Obviously its somewhat situational but I'd love to hear your opinion on it)(praying camp 2021 happens!) xx

at my camp we actually do have an LGBTQ+ aspect to training and I would say that every member of staff is very accepting in general so I think it depends what camp you go to and where as to how “progressive” they are on that front

Hey Ally! I’ve just watched a few of your camp videos and omg if I didn’t want to go to camp I definitely do now, it sounds amazing!!! I just had a question as you make being a general counseller sound really good and interactive, and you mentioned joining in on activities and stuff with your group, so I guess my question is if you’re a specialty counsellor and you’re only teach one skill do you still get the same opportunities to join in on activities as well or are you more stuck to your skill if that makes sense! I’m from Melbourne aswell so have never experienced camp as a camper and even though I’d be there as a cousellor I still want to be able to join in!!! Thanks so much for your videos they’ve helped heaps! Xxx

Hiya Sam! So glad to hear you're considering it :) At most camps, counselors can techincally get one period off a day (we never really asked for them though), some people use them to nap or call home but you could use this to go spend a period with your division and join in with them. GC's definitely get more time experiencing all different activities, whereas specialty counselors get to meet all the different kids and counselors at camp!

I could say I’m a bit cut and don’t know what to do! I declined a offer from a camp as they didn’t offer me the role I was looking for unfortunately. I applied in late May when the situation was NOWHERE near as bad in the US, as they were only getting 20-25k cases a day and not over 200k. If you were me, would you smash out the last year and a half of your primary teaching degree and then go to camp once graduated in 2023 when everything should be perfectly normal again or go next year? It just seems camp will not be the same next year at all. Are you giving it a miss next year too because of that reason?

If I were you, I think I'd go in 2022! I'm hoping I can get there next year for my last summer, I miss my kids and my friends so much, but we'll just have to wait and see :(

@@AllySheehan that’s what I’m starting to think I should do! Like I’m pretty much graduated in June 2022, I just need to do a 10 week placement and then I have finished my degree. So I’m thinking that would be the best time. Camp is fun, but I’m incredibly unsure when all my American friends are telling me not to come due to the situation over there.

Hiii! I'm waiting to get placed for this summer and just have a few questions :)) are you ever solely in charge of your group of campers or is your co councillor always there? Also, if a camper is physically sick or something is it the councillors job to clean it/ deal with it? Thank you!!

You will always have a co-counselor with you (unless one of you is taking a kid to the infirmary or something) as well as the activity counselors (ie ropes staff or tennis staff)
