I am so grateful that you brought Dr. Miller back, he has such a unique talent to share wisdom found in the scriptures. Really had me ponder on the desires of my heart. I want my heart to be inclined to love the Lord and serve others everyday. Love all your podcasts, but today’s touched my heart in a special way.

My son was a missionary the Philippines when President Oaks was serving there. Thomas was leading a zone conference with then Elder Oaks in Urdaneta when they got word that there was a terrible traffic tie up not far from the church, which was preventing many missionaries from getting to the conference. Elder Oaks took off his suit coat and walked with Thomas out into the traffic with something he could stand on. He did in the middle of the offending intersection and powerfully directed the traffic and cleared up the the congestion. The Lords servant helping his children get to their destination.

Great pod cast. Dr Miller opens my narrow mind to see how the scriptures can be likened to my life. His thoughts on love not being a gift we give when you are obedient was so enlightening as was the idea of punishment being an opportunity to have a course correction if the punishment fits the sin.

Thank you for shining the light of love and concern in the conversations Alma has with his son Corianton. We need to remember love in parenting, as God shares with us. ❤

I'm a commute-listener in Los Angeles and have commented before, but I just have to say thank you again. I love your podcast and the various guests you bring on - it has added SO MUCH to my CFM/BofM study this year. And while I wasn't thrilled about a philosopher at first, I'm amazed at his incredible take on these chapters. I'll definitely be looking for his books.

I love his pursuit of the existential. I do have to wonder at his discounting his interest of the historical questions of the Book of Mormon as an exercise of that. Perhaps I am not quite right reading into what he meant by that but it seems essential even from a philosophical existential perspective, perhaps even more so to look at this from the historical perspective to have the full existential perspective of it. Who is Alma? Why is he writing what he is writing? Who is Mormon? Why does he include this as a witness of the great things God has done for his people in demonstrating His power to deliver? Why is this information essential to connect back to the posterity of Lehi, Zoram and Mulek? There are some explicitly historic purposes for the book that expressly impact the existential answers it can provide if we will include that perspective.

I love reading and studying the Book of Mormon using both perspectives, taking both a philosophical/spiritual approach as well as historical. I can see a much bigger picture, and it has a stronger effect in my life when I apply scripture study using multiple perspectives

Thank you all. This is fantastic as always! For many years, the Spirit has been deepening my understanding of God's justice and the basis is this: God wants our judgment to be as easy on us as possible. He is not the prosecutor we envision, with Jesus Christ our advocate. The Savior is our advocate with, not against the Father. They are both doing everything They can to make the end result for us the best it can be. Their plan is for our happiness.

The discussion beginning around 23:30 reminds me of a quote from Anthony Sweat in his Unfolding Restoration Series on KZbin. Anthony Sweat says he looks at The Book of Mormon as a book that teaches how to attain salvation and looks at the Doctrine and Covenants as a book that teaches how to attain exaltation.

As always, thank you, thank you, thank you. I am curious on this episode why these chapters would be referred to as letters, particularly in light of Alma 35:16 which sets up these chapters, "Therefore, he caused that his sons should be gathered together, that he might give unto them every one his charge, separately, concerning the things pertaining unto righteousness. And we have an account of his commandments, which he gave unto them according to his own record." Additional insights would be appreciated.

I think Alma delivered these chapters personally to his sons, but he also probably wrote them up to give his final counsel to them on a long term basis. It is unlikely that he spoke in chiasmus type language to Hellman but it is likely that he wrote a chiasm and then discussed with his son. Since they are written down, they would be letters.
@RickSege
@RickSege Ай бұрын
I’ve never heard that the chapters where Alma talks to each of his sons are “letters” until listening to this episode. I’ve always read it as Alma speaking directly to each of his sons and I’ve always heard it taught that way. Church videos also show it that way. Where are you getting that these were letters? In reality, it doesn’t change what’s being taught - I’m just curious where this is coming from.

I wondered the same thing. My only thought was Im pretty sure he wasn’t writing his conversations while he was with his sons, therefore they ended up in letter form, (meant for us too!) which can actually teach us that words given under the influence of spirit should be recorded and remembered. (General Conf and personal journals and Patriarchal Blessings) just a thought.

I'm so sorry. Could you please give a reference on where the idea came from that Alma 36-42 are letters to Alma's sons? In Alma 35:16 it says that, "(Alma) he caused that his sons should be gathered together that he might give unto them every one his charge..." it sounds like he spoke directly to his sons. Could you please clarify this? Thanks...

Another comment... I would love to hear what Brother Miller would say about the scriptures about God's anger/wrath/judgments He will send... I listened to this podcast and then happened to read D&C 109 and specifically verses 38, 45, 52... Verse 43 says everyone's souls are precious but there are many scriptures that talk about God's judgments/wrath on the wicked etc. Trying to understand this better...
