Also, if you're in a different country and you're going to drive, research what the general speed limit is. Here it's 100km on motorways n stuff, but in towns and cities it's 50km, it depends where you are. Not knowing the speed limit where you're driving can cause some reeeeal dangerous situations. That's one of the reasons why here so many people complain about tourists driving, because they don't bother to know our road rules.

Hey Louis, I'm a long time viewer, born and raised in Nz (currently living in Germany). While this was a frustrating video to watch I hope it raises awareness of the huge issue of foreign drivers in Nz. Many visitors underestimate the distances and road conditions (it's not just long straight roads) when planning a trip in NZ and end up not allowing themselves enough time and hence having to speed and drive dangerously to arrive at their destination on time. While this is only one example, there are so many more that can sadly be found in the news as they've ended up getting in a crash, either seriously injuring or killing passengers and other motorists. I'm not going to quote false facts but I do know that quite a large majority of fatal car accidents (particularly between Christchurch and Queenstown) are due to drivers that are visiting our country. I'm glad you learnt your lesson, that other people were able to learn from your mistake and that you both are safe- take care

Please respect our road rules in NZ. As someone who works in a NZ hospital, the amount of death and injuries from foreign drivers is shocking and plain unfair. People driving on the wrong side of the road, speeding, overtaking on blind corners etc. It only takes 5 minutes to read up about the road rules where you're travelling to. Your audience is massive & it would be great to see you leading as an example instead of laughing it off!

To all those saying "But in my country we go faster" New Zealand roads are well known for being small, windy, and having adverse camber, blind corners, hairpin, fords, gravel, mud. They are prone to flooding and landslides due to the landscape they are built in, as well as being either coastal or range roads. Even our main state highway is single lane at points, and they only finished sealing it some six years ago. Also, as a farming nation there's a high risk of running into stock or agricultural machinery being moved. Which means the lower speed limit compared to European nations is suited for our road conditions and potential hazards. The speed he was doing was eligible for him losing his license, and posed an enormous danger to other road users. There is no way he was unaware of his speed, as he would have been passing every single car he came across. The speed limit is widely posted, and 100km/h is the absolute upper limit. Even on main highways the corners can have speed notices as low as 15-25km/h due to how small and windy they get, following the path around cliff faces and so on. This includes the part of the country he's in, as Northland has the well-known lethal road around the Brynderwyn Range. Hopefully a lesson well learned, as it is the actions of drivers such as himself that may prevent tourists doing the classic "Kiwi Roadtrip" in future as NZ is considering introducing strict regulations on tourists renting cars, due to a spate of deaths caused by their recklessness. I'm a kiwi in the UK, and he was breaking the UK speed limit for a dual carriageway anyway, so to say he wasn't going that fast is an affront to the local kiwis who have lost friends and family from drivers like him. To put it in perspective, in New Zealand even an ambulance on lights will only go 130km/h on a straight motorway. He was going faster than an ambulance with lights and sirens on. Keep that in mind.

I am currently being homeschool and I love it! It is a great way to teach your kids at their own pace and teach them standards you want them to learn that they might not learn at a normal school. I will say one thing to make sure you do is keep them socializing with other kids through sports or clubs because it's easy for them to feel left out or isolated when they're homeschooled. Also find out what their learning style is because some kids find it easier to do it themselves (which I prefer) while others would rather be taught and shown how (like my siblings). If you can meet up with other homeschool families that makes it even better because you all have something in common and you can help each other out with teaching and finding activities to do.

I see a lot of people in the comments saying that 141 Km isn't fast. Tourists and foreigners alike are responsible for more than 85% of car crashes in the North Island and 87.5% in the South Island (statistics between 2005-2014). And you know what, they probably said the same thing too when they hopped behind the wheel. Our roads, particularly out in the country are no joke, while there may not be a lot of traffic, it's riddled with sudden tight turns like you wouldn't believe and poorly lit if lit at all which they're usually not. And it's easy to become distracted by the scenery when you're out in the wops. Learn the rules before you drive in another country that's all I'm saying.

I was homeschooled, and it's amazing. It's incredibly conducive to unique and stylized learning. It should be taught that school hours aren't from one specific hour to the other, but rather the entire day is for learning. Make sure and use fun, engaging curriculum to teach the important things such as science, math, and writing. Reading should be a constantly encouraged pastime. Reading improves memory, focus, and vocabulary. Outdoor sports are also a great way to breach the classroom teaching norm, and explore. Make sure and stay on target for learning things in a timely manner, but most of all, have fun. Make sure your kids have an active social life too :) Life isn't all work and no play.

Hey Louis. Home schooling is amazing. We have been doing it for about 3 months now and my son is excited about all his lessons because we teach him subjects which he has an interest in. We have structured lessons for things like maths, drumming, literacy and computer programming. And have a more fluid approach in other areas where my son researches whatever he wants and we feed in important information. For example my son watches your videos and sees all the amazing places you go and the things you do. We have used your inspiration and he is now planning a road trip around Europe. He is in full control of every aspect and we help him find the info he needs to complete the task. He learns languages, geography, cuisines, different cultures and so many other things. The most important things to remember when homeschooling are to take your lead from the child and keep it fun.

My grandson is homeschooled. ( he is now 14) Depending on where you live the regulations are very different. He has ADD but has never used medication for it. Homeschooling allows to educate without restrictions of movement or exploration. They can learn at their own pace and it allows you to spend time on weak areas and breeze through areas they grasp easily. I believe teaching at times suited for your child makes the process much more enjoyable for all. Good luck.

Hey Louis, love your videos and i'm so happy to see you back in New Zealand again! I just wanted you to be aware that New Zealand has had a very high death toll this summer on the roads and a big contributing factor has been tourists not following the road rules and speeding. Although you said our speed limit isn't that fast you will find a lot of people come from overseas and underestimate our roads which twist and turn a lot and are very uneven. We don't have any long highways like overseas. Please be safe and don't put yourself and others in danger, 141 is wayyyy over the limit and I personally feel really unsafe when I see people going that fast down roads that they don't know, especially in the South Island if you end up heading down there, which I hope you do again! :)

NZ police said we cannot drive more than 4 km over the speed limit in summer. 141kmph is dangerous to the point of potentially killing other road users. Really not impressed. Plus, you don't need to know miles, our speed signs are in km and so are our speedos so there should be no problems. I'm really sad to hear this.

I do homeschooling, This is my 1st year of it, I am in 10th grade, Sophomore, Ive always been in original public schooling and this was a big change for me but literally one of the best decisions of my life. The environment is just so incredible, It's so much easier to learn and you don't get as stressed, I feel constantly happy and I feel like I am truly doing well in school with no distractions. When I first started homeschool we didn't know what to expect it was all new to me and my parents, We set up a desk and we bought a new iMac 25 desktop computer to work on, Some notebooks and folders and things and kept them in the drawers, Its best to make sure they are in an environment where there is no distractions, Its just them, Their work, And their materials. Definitely have 1 certain spot for them to be in to work in from a certain time to the end of the day. It takes some getting used to but just go with what you feel is right and make sure they feel comfortable and are excelling well. Trust me, It is really incredible, The best decision of my life.

I was even part of a homeschool group when I was very young...you could look into that. It's basically a bunch of families that meet once a week to take classes together... tutors in way. I am 15 and I'm from Canada. I'm homeschooled currently and it is amazing. I have a gym class that I have to do. Some parts are essays and stuff on being healthy but the other part of it is getting 100 hours of physical activity by the end of the year. The best part about homeschool, for me, is walking down town can count for my gym and it can go towards my hours. So with New Zealand you were talking about the ocean and the mountains. If you're like me and have hours your kids need to do for gym take them hiking and swimming, exploring and teach them about the culture. It's an easy way to do gym. Good luck!!

All these comments from foreigners are infuriating. 100kmph might not be fast in Germany, the UK or the US, but in New Zealand, it really is. Our roads are extremely dangerous, narrow and windy. If you come here with the mentality that 100km isn't fast, and you believe you can drive faster, then you're gonna get yourself, or some other innocent people killed. I'm so sick of seeing foreigners crashing on New Zealand roads, there needs to be new rules in place that doesn't allow them to drive without some type of road test beforehand. So yeah, cool if you think 100km isn't fast, but don't you dare come here and not follow our speed laws. It makes me so angry that he didn't know the speed limit before driving, there is absolutely no excuse for that. And confusion over the fact we use kilometres isn't a good excuse either. All car speedos here are in kilometres, look at the signage then match it to your speedo. Not that difficult. I'm so sick of innocent New Zealanders getting injured and killed by dumbass foreigners that think they don't need to follow our laws because they're not the same as theirs.

I am currently in home-schooling, and I find it very helpful in many ways. Home-schooled made me tend to think more independently, outside the box. It really strengthens my love to learning new things, makes me motivated, and eradicates boredom. What I like most about home-schooling is that strengthens closeness of the family, and parents’ relationships to children are made deeper.

New Zealand has a notoriously bad death rate on our roads as a result of tourists making poor decisions, and the fact that you didn't even know what the speed limit is before you got behind the wheel is seriously concerning. I beg you to take a step back and think of the safety of others, if not yourself, before you operate a vehicle.

I was homeschooled up through high school. I learned a lot from nature and travel. There is so much science in food, botany, physics and natural events. My school day was structured around outdoor activities and my mom would give me and my siblings freedom to choose which order we did things in and how much of a subject we studied at a time. I retained more knowledge when I had the time to soak up a subject or read an entire book in one sitting; not because it was assigned to me but because I made the choice to do so. What was most important (in my opinion) was that we had socialisation with other kids, which we mostly got from sports activities and homeschool co-ops in our area. I truly loved being homeschooled :) It really works if there is a structured environment and if children are given the space to explore and enrich their own education. All they need is a little guidance and a tiny push to have a really rich, structured home education.

Homeschooling is super fun! I grew up homeschooled and eventually went public school the early years of high school. I went back home for the rest of my junior and senior year. Homeschooling is such an amazing chance to get to know your kids and have them learn to move at their own pace. They still have friends and get to hang out with them. Homeschooling is such a blessing, you can get in homeschool groups as well for your kids to meet new people! There's book curriculums and online as well. Books are better to use because there are no distractions.

when I was younger (I'm 17 now) my parents took me out of school so we could go travelling around Europe. My mum was, at that point, a teacher so that sort of helped. My education was based more around experience than actual structured learning. every day I would speak different languages and experience different cultures. This helped me to become the self-sufficient and confident person I am today. I would have maybe 2 hours of proper taught lessons each day and my parents would ensure that my free time during the day included some educational tasks (weighing pine nuts we collected from a forest and doing maths stuff around that etc.) I think the thing to be focussed on is making their childhood more enjoyable and allow them to learn the way they want - it definitely helped me develop. I am now back in mainstream education doing my A-levels, having got excellent grades in my GCSEs; it definitely didn't negatively impact my educational life. Hope you can take something from this.

I am now 18, have worked for multiple software companies as a UI designer and software developer without stepping a day in college. Homeschooling allowed me tons of opportunities to explore my passions. I dabbled in welding, black smithing and construction all before age 15 before deciding on software development. It taught me to live life to the fullest, not waste time and explore my passions. I highly recommend it to anyone out there considering it!

That big sign on the side of the road says what the speed limit is, I'm sure they have them in England. Our tourism industry should really explain the rules better before handing over the keys. Louis, for Rob, integrated learning is SO important for young kids. Basically what this means is, instead of teaching a lesson on maths, then a lesson on English, then science etc. all these lessons can be compiled into one activity. Focusing on one concept or theme that interests the child then developing their mathematical, scientific and English skills will come naturally through the learning. An example could be a theme of the ocean. Writing stories about groups of fish and their environment and how it's affected by humans is maths, science and English and even geography. The same theme should be used for a period of time, in regular schools this would be one term (depending on the grade) or two themes per term. It's really interesting. I recommend reading articles about it, try reading about the Reggio Emilia approach, Steiner etc. :) good luck with the homeschooling! It's totally worth the hard work because they will actually want to learn!!!

I was homeschooled right from preschool to grade 12. When I was younger, me and all my siblings would learn together from my mom. We learned all the regular things like math, english, history, science, but then we would also have time to pursue things that we enjoyed like art, music, or even just exploring outdoors. When I got to highschool, I enrolled in an online school so that I could still graduate with a diploma and have all my necessary credits for highschool, but still be able to do it from home. Also I was able to pursue things that I love like music, running and writing because I had more free time and my schedule could be moved around as I pleased. I am homeschooled, but the way I was taught was through co-ops and also any other way you can get involved with other people and make friends in a less school dynamic. When you want to bring your kids into nature and teach them in a way to have fun and enjoy everything, although you can do that in homeschooling easily (whether you use a curriculum, or make your own), there's this other thing called "Unschooling" where you learn more by nature and being able to do fun things. My moms friends are doing unschooling with their kids, and they're very smart and have learned a lot (although college isn't something they want to do, and they prefer being out in the middle of nowhere, growing their own food, and basically living off the grid and in nature). It really just depends on what curriculum you use, and it's trial and error.

I've homeschooled my son for several years now and it's the best thing our family has done. There are so many great resources out there, many of them free. It's so fun to see the world through your children's eyes and learn alongside them. My 2 pieces of advice would be #1 give yourself grace, homeschooling is hard and it can be easy to worry if you are doing enough for your child. #2 in the end their character will matter a whole lot more than their education so prioritize your relationship with them over your lesson plans. IMHO

Rob, we home-schooled 2 of our kids briefly, like 1 & 2 years because they were struggling in the "system." My kids decided Mum was too dumb to teach them so they demanded school hours (making her job easier). My wife spoke to her good teacher friends and simply went to "School Supplies" in Whangarei for the curriculum books. What the daughters discovered was that they could start at 8am and finish early. They did amazing projects in the afternoons. They got after school jobs. They were far more contented without the peer pressure. In fact we were the source of the peer pressure. My middle daughter left her primary school at 11 (we also enlisted SPELD because she had a reading age 6) and after 1 year at home, entered Northland College top of the 3rd form entrants. She finished 7th form and was awarded Dux. During their home-schooling time he girls ran a little co-op buying produce at the Whangarei wholesale markets (closed now) and selling it around a circle of families. They planned a complete South Island tour for the family, including the budget. They learned far more than they would have at school, especially the truth that you are responsible for your own education. I think those two girls are possibly the most self-sufficient managers of their lives out of our 5 children.

I was homeschooled and plan on doing the same with my kids. My mom basically taught us the basics and took us to the library a ton so we could check out whatever we wanted to read and follow our interests. I socialized mainly at church and with neighbors and didn't really miss public school since I got to sleep in and do school in a couple hours as opposed to all day. My mom also made everything a "field trip" like adding up totals at the grocery store, going to the beach, etc. The only thing I'd caution against is making sure you don't get out of your depth with things. If you don't have the knowledge, hire a tutor or enroll your kid in a class through a group or co-op or something so they don't just miss that knowledge. I could learn a lot on my own but once my mom ran out of math knowledge she couldn't exactly help me with homework so I went to college early for that.

It got to where my mother could let me sleep in in the morning because I preferred to work at night and that worked for me. It's more work on the parent because you have several different learning style and interests to figure out and teach but you have an advantage as a parent because you know your kid. The classroom is never closed. Every opportunity has a lesson in it. You can write short essays on your observations. Practice giving those essays as public speaking and speech. Science. Find the history behind it etc. possibilities are endless.

We live at our library and enjoy our adventures & opportunities we get to have together as a family. As a mom, I especially love that I don't have to say goodbye to my kids each morning and trust that someone else does a good job raising my children. I also know that each of my kids learn differently, and I am able to teach them in ways that they will learn best. They wouldn't get that in a classroom of 25 kids with 1 teacher. We have tons of reasons for taking this journey. You definitely have to firmly believe in your reasons, that's what will keep you strong on those exhausting days. 😊 Praise God!
