Just completely fill the barrel with water. Everyone has a hose. Fill it til water is running out of the lid holes. At that point the water has replaced any vapor, and you can leave it full of water, cut it with a torch or plazma cutter, and then kick it over and dump the water out. I've done that exact thing probably 100 times over the course of my life for burn barrels and whatnot.

J .H. Just a thought about the mounting of the battery(s) in the bed of your mud truck and that is to get a battery box like are used on a boat. Some years back I had mounted the batteries for my truck in the bed of my truck similar to how you did yours with the terminals exposed and had a wrench setting on the edge of the bed fell down onto the exposed battery terminals and shoot back and clocked me in my jaw. I lost a tooth and had two surgeries as well as having my mouth wired shut for 6 weeks. Also you might want to consider ditching that "T" style cable connector and installing a positive and negative terminal stud and crimping on some terminal "eye" lugs. Lastly have you ever seen or used "Military Battery Terminals" Any time I replace a battery cable /terminal end I now replace /upgrade it to a Military Battery Terminals. PS I have had a barrel flash on me similar to what happened to you but instead of the barrel having brake-kleen mine had dry-cleaning fluid, anyway afterwards a friend of mines father told me to always drill a couple holes in the top of a barrel that I was going to scrap/cut and the blow them out before cutting them to make sure there are no pockets of trapped gases in them

Glad you are ok Justin. Watching the video you can see the blue flame starting to push through the cut when you were about half way around the circle. No way you could see it while you were cutting, but as soon as the piece was cut enough to lift the flame flashed up. Fortunately you did have the cap open because that prevented the barrel from rupturing. I've cut many barrels over the years and it really doesn't matter what's inside, the gases will build up. Having those caps off allows the barrel to vent. The safest way is to fill it about 2/3 full of water and watch for flames when cutting. Most metal recyclers won't take barrels if the lids are still on (guess it's different there), besides crushing those flammable barrels is actually even more dangerous. All welding and cutting equipment is dangerous and sometimes we need a reminder to double check ourselves. Thank you for sharing. Dangerous work still needs to get done and hopefully by you posting that clip will cause people to do a double check for the extra safety. 👍

I've been able to do a lot of different types of welding over the past 30 plus years and a drum is something that absolutely terrifies me and is something I will not touch. I will take a hot tie-in on a large high pressure gas line over a drum any day. It's just because they are so unassuming and like you just showed you could have stuck a lighter to it and nothing happens. So you go on and then when it hits the right amount of air/fuel she just go's off. I've seen so many that the person was not so lucky. I'm totally glad your ok and were definitely man enough to show everyone what can happen when you have a momentary lack in judgment. Definitely hope your video saves someone else from taking a chance. Stay safe brother.

Glad you are okay. It only takes a minute for something to go wrong. I lifted the fuel tank out of my bug to get at the steering linkage, which was enough to rip the fuel hose, filling the pit with petrol. Hours later my mate took a grinder to a bolt on the steering linkage and the pit exploded in to flame. Moral of these stories is always take all the safety precautions you can.

Good stuff showing that, Glad you are OK. Back in the day when I had my shop one night I was welding next to the parts cleaner, next thing I knew it was blazing and low and behold the safety features actually worked the solder link on the lid made it shut as I was running for a fire extinguisher. Lessons learned.

Back in the Old Days.....used to fill fuel tanks with water, pushes all the low laying vapors out, then braze/weld away.... Glad you're good

Glad you're OK. It's so easy to overlook a potentially dangerous situation. I'm glad you showed it and talked about.

Im glad you put that in there. An awesome piece of information for anyone getting started metal working. I have cut the top off old oil barrels but thats a little less sketchy.

As someone who has burned their face pretty severely not one but two times (1st improper safety equipment and 2nd just plain stupidity), I feel for you man. I wish you the best of luck with the healing process since I know firsthand how much of a pain it can be, even when it doesn't seem severe. Drink a lot of water on the daily, it helps a massive amount. Looking forward to your next video and I'm glad you're alright.

Glad you're ok JH. You should get a can opener for barrels just in case you decide to use the sheet metal from a barrel again.

Glad you're ok .. at least it flamed out and didn't actually explode. Thanks for sharing ... maybe the younger crowd will learn what us older guys have already seen too many times. 100% filled with water, then drained to cut line or i won't touch any drum or cylinder.
