Pavarotti goes deep into character and with his amazing voice he is the man in agony, whose very soul is torn and yet the show must go on. One of the most amazing moments in opera. My Dad used to play the opera "Pagliacci" for us and this was the highlight.

Another emotional aria is from Tosca - "E lucevan le stelle". He is a man who is about to be executed and this is with English subtitles. He performed it in 1978. Absolute brilliance.

This is how powerful opera can be when sung by the right singer. If the singer cannot deliver, it becomes excruciatingly bad! There are very few singers anymore that can deliver in this way. As as singer ages, it becomes more and more difficult to pull this off. Here, Pavarotti was still in his prime and singing like no one else could at the time, or since! Great video and reaction!

For those who want background - this scene takes place in the middle of an opera called "I Pagliacci". The aria, called "Vesti la giubba" - (Ves-tee lah djoo-bah) translates to "Put on the costume". Pavarotti plays the role of Canio, the leader of a small performing ensemble. Canio is incredibly jealous for his wife and has just found out that his she has been unfaithful to him. Now he sings about how he has to put on a happy face and perform for the public who are expecting a comedy, even as he is mourning. At 1:45 the "You are a clown" line, then, is especially significant because he's no longer speaking about just his vocation.

“Vesti la Giubba”, pronounced “Vestee la Jewbbia”, means “put on your costume”. It’s a song much like Freddie Mercury’s “The Show Must Go On”. I met Pavarotti in the late 80s/early 90s, backstage at Place des Arts as I was there for a piano which had just been reconditioned and was being delivered. We shared a plate of homemade gnocci together which I’d brought for my lunch. We laughed, we talked, and then we both went our separate ways. He was a kind man, a simple man despite his fame. He’d come up to me when I’d sworn out loud in Italian, forgetting where I was, and the sound had reverberated throughout the place. “Who speak Italian here?” Were the first words he’d said to me. His last words to me were “Arrivederci, Bambola” (Until I see you again, Little Doll). “Nessun Dorme” is pronounced “Nessoon dormeh” as in “meh”, for your information, case you wanted to know. The “u” in Italian is pronounced “oo”; this will help you 😊 You seem like a really sweet, empathic young woman. May this world spare you its pains. In the play (Pagliachio), he has just been told by friends that his wife, whom he saved from a life in the streets, has been unfaithful and is cheating on him. He does not yet know with whom she is having an affair. In the last act of the play (No! Pagliachio Non-Sun! No! I am not a clown!) he confronts his wife, demanding to know who her lover is. You won't want to miss it. Another good aria from another opera is Una Furtiva LaGrima (One Secret Tear), where he sees the woman he secretly loves cry a single tear as she watches the young girls and their beaus dancing and flirting. She is over the usual age of marriage and lonely. When he sees her tear he knows he can win her heart and make her happy.

If you enjoy seeing masters of classical singing styles like this another i would recommend, albeit from a different genre, would be to watch Franzl Lang Yodelling , watch the mouth and be amazed at the speed of the changes and control of sound (start with the video where he is in the green hat with a large pomf on the tip)

Story goes like this: Canio (Pavarotti) is married with Nedda, but she doesn't love him, as she loves Silvio in his stead. Moments before this famous aria, Canio, aided by Tonio who also loves Nedda but he's refused by her, saw Nedda together with another man. Full of jealousy he forces Nedda to tell him her lover's name, but she refuses. Soon after, Beppe warns Canio and Nedda that the show is about to begin (they are clowns). Ironically the play they are about to perform sees Colombine (Nedda) and his lover Harlequin make a fool out of Pagliaccio (Canio). That's why this piece is so emotional: Canio cannot show his true intentions (he wants to murder Silvio, Nedda's lover), as he must play the part of the foolish, gullible Pagliaccio, hiding his feelings behind a mask.

6:08 - very interesting bit about Joker and Harley-Quinn! The Harley Quinn name is a play on words - since the Joker and his sidekick are clowns, the writers pulled from history. Harley-Quinn is actually pulled from Harlequin, and English version of the word 'Arlecchino' - "Are-leh-key-no". The character of Arlecchino goes back to the middle ages, where these characters like Columbina, Arlecchino and others are pulled from. There was a type of show called "Commedia dell'arte" translated "Comedy of the artists". They wore distinctive costumes and masks to help the audience identify who was who. The roles of the characters were clear in each show. Arlecchino was a servant, often a 'country bumpkin', a young man who has recently come into the city looking for work. He is young, naïve, and eager to please. Columbina is often a central character, around whom the plots revolve. She's clever and witty and knows how to work around the other characters in the play who are not quick as she is.

You got it right but go check the story. That's the moment that the character ( who is an actual clown for a living! Not just methaphorical! ) Decides to kill his cheating wife. So it is a change in the the brain. Tou also see him becomming a monster in a way. So when you know the story it is not just empathy for him

Omg again Pavarotti 😅😅😅😅I love him. He is lyric tenor , but for this aria better dramatic tenor . He is awesome tenor , but not the best one . Just compare the same aria of Pagliacci with another tenors or Try Aria "Una furtiva lagrima " Di Stefano(tenor ) .
